Thank you Molly 😊 another fantastic video,I loved seeing the cattle checking you out filming them, the smell of silage is lovely,,all the best to you and Shane from the UK 🇬🇧 😊❤
The calves brought out your brilliant smile. Made my day. Your love for animals is endearing😊. I had not seen cows eating potatoes before, what a great way to use the spuds you aren’t going to sell. Your farm is a credit to your family. Waste not want not.
Looks like you and Shane are able to stay very fit even during the winter, it was nice to see in the previous video that you both got out to camp for a night, I would’ve hoped for snowmobiles but considering the lack of snow I can see why four-wheel-drive trucks were sufficient, you allowed us an interesting view into what happens to the uncared-for unwonted Potatoes and thank you for showing us that tidbit, we really enjoy your channel so thank you for sharing your farm
Shane you are one hard working man. I never see you standing still. Thanks for sharing another video with us Molly. The dogs are so beautiful and seem so gentle.
Shane is very hard working. There is always something to be done on a farm! The dogs are very sweet! I can’t say the same for strangers, they are very protective. But love their people so much! 🐕🐕🐕🐕
Wow, I had not idea that you could potatoes to cattle! I thought that they would at least need to be cooked (thats what you would need to do for pigs.. they can eat their aw but wont be able to convert much of the potatoe into meat). How much of it can a cow really process? A short google search said that up to 50% of the dry matter ration (Hay?) can be potatoes? In our climate (Nova Scotia) potatoes and grass grow quite well! Thanks for bringing it up BellsFarming! We have a 25 acre homestead here and I would love to have cattle some day.
I love that this is so local to me, I have bought meat from that farm more than a few times, my daughter lovingly refers to the baby cows as "sliders". It is good to know where your food comes from.
Thank you Molly! Being an old Idaho boy now living in Utah, I really enjoy seeing how similar, and different, potato farming is in Maine. Your videos bring back so many memories of my childhood helping my grandpa on his farm. Thank you again for all your hard work, and Shane’s!
A cool source of free feed that a farm I worked on found was the spent grain from a distillery. They would fill up those 350 gallon totes with this slurry of spent corn and barley, and every animal loved it. Once we got a load of spent figs they used for a rum they made, and I got nice and hammered from liquid that I separated out. I dont drink anymore, but it's still a fun memory, drinking sketchy fig booze, listening to a hockey game in a trailer in the middle of nowhere. City people miss out on farm kicks!
i love your content . . bty . . if the pups dont hog the bed you need more of them . . as an aside . . thank you for bringing us along . . great edits . . you are a natural . . . your smile makes me smile .
We had 5 at once. It was alot of hair hahah. Akitas are such loyal loving dogs. We decided when our pack of 4 has lived out their lives, we will rescue Akitas from shelters. I can’t say I’m much of a trainer, more of a lover hahah thank you for watching!
Haha I had to get that barrel dolly. They used to roll them from on end of the building to the other. At the time there was another young lady family member working that was 100lbs soaking wet. And rolling barrels just wasn’t an option. Haha I do love the work out though!
I’ve been around cattle for years and today I’ve learned 2 things. I didn’t know that cattle would eat potatoes and I didn’t know that they would eat Spanish Moss that grows on Oak trees in the south. Of course I never tried feeding my cattle potatoes and there’s no Spanish Moss in Pennsylvania. Thanks for sharing your video. 👍
I learned something new. Cows love potatoes. Shane good thing you can say no to Molly lol. She would bring home all kinds of baby animals. Thanks for the videos
I never knew cows like potatoes. As always i learn something. We used to raise cows on our farm for beef, and its nice to cut your steak up with a fork, very tender. That is a consistent job just being able to keep them fed because of lack of pasture space. With raising horses also, we always separated them from the cows because of horses will go to the next level in foraging and cows can't eat down that low, but its all good. I like that your operation is such a "well oiled" machine, always ahead and thinking. Impressive! I did notice that you were cold girl. Made me cold watching. You're tough Molly and love the smile. Always want the best for you and ty for sharing. Take care . ❤
Hi Molly just binge watched all your videos and really loved the way you were smiling when you were feeding the cows I know how you felt as when I was in my late teens early twenties I had the joy of working on a breeding pig farm with 30+ sows and gilts and 3 boars when it came to farrowing time it was most enjoyable seeing the sows giving birth
Ha thank you very much for watching all my videos! I’m still learning how to make them. This year I will have a microphone in the tractor! Yes the baby cows were precious! Thank you for sharing your story. I would love to see baby piglets😊 we had one litter of puppies with our Akitas to make our little dog pack family. Watching the birth and watching them grow was the sweetest things I have ever experienced. I do not have children, so they were the closet thing to babies for me. Makes me want to melt just thinking about it😊
I love how at the beginning his barrel has a few spuds in it and he leaves you with a barrel half full to empty. I never knew cows would eat tators. It is nice to have an outlet for your unwanted potatoes.
I thought that you were going to fall in with the potatoes there for a sec, so glad that you didn’t. Those cows sure looked happy eating those spuds. I think Shane had the same look but with a big bag of cheese puffs, think it was the frozen nuts episode.
Another great video! Denali seems so sweet! After seeing you light up at the sight of the cows, you need a cow or two as long as you have the fencing for it. 🙂 🐄
Denali is the best. I don’t think I will ever have a dog love me as much as she does. Those baby moos were so cute! I love all animals! 😊thank you for noticing the happiness in my face! 😁
Loved this video also. Farmers are needed ,, . and are the hardest working folks .Your videos are So educational GOD keep our farmers healthy, We need them
I use to raise hogs and I always had family and friends give me their scraps and whatever and my hogs were very happy. I watch and enjoy your videos and talking about cows I also enjoy watch Acres of Clay and they have a dairy farm and grow most of the food for their cows as well just in case you may like to watch them.
Another great video, Molly 😁! And I learned some more about cows 🐮 😃😁. You got some good footage using the drone. Keep up the good work 😃. You and Shane have an awesome weekend... Well, what's left of it 😁!
Thankyou both for bringing me along! Having been raised on a cattle/tobacco farm(s), I just found out that cows eat potatoes. Whoda thunkit?😂 I think Larry should've given you a calf! Dangit.
Hi Molly I’m from Illinois and we have a lot of cattle farms and there’s always the debate on which is better eating grass feed cows or corn feed cows 🐄… Never have I heard of Potato feed cows 🤔🤔🤔 Very interesting thanks for sharing as always 😊
Great seeing where the potatoes go to other areas to feed animals. I think you and Shane need to get some mini highland cows, they would be great and they stay small haha
We did that one year, Fed the taters to the steers, They got the shits, Had to park shit spreader at the end of the feed lot to catch the shit that was running out. Thanks New Holland for the gate that was if front of the beaters to keep the poo from running out.
Yeah. I’m assuming that cow would have to get used to eating potatoes if they never have before. These cows have been eating potatoes do as long as o have been at the farm. So far so good.
If you have not already done so, I would be interested in seeing a video of what potatoes you use for seed potatoes. I wonder if the small potatoes could be used as seed potatoes.
Yes small potatoes can be used for seed! There are some rules about seed here. We do buy seed every year now. We used to grow some acres for just seed. But we decided it was just easier to buy seed, and support the seed farmers
I love your attention to details , I can literally smell the earthen smell of the process . I also had cattle and have fed many a pound of culls to the cows . Just a side note , nothing smells much worse than a rotten potato , my girls would complain if we ran into a rot pocket coming out of the storage during sorting . Hi Molly, Another great video and very interesting. Iwas woundering what you did with your reject potates. I knew they fed them to hogs but they boiled them to soften them some in a big old kettle so the hogs wouldn't choke on them.😂
From Australia. I can undestand Pigs eating potatoes, but I thought Cows would be more picky, you learn something new every day. During the Vietnam years those little potatoes were peekd and canned and called Tiny taters. The Australian Army purchased thousand and thousands of huge tins of the damn things. You became very sick of them in no time at all, but that was the only way we got potatoes in Vietnam. The cooks became quite adept at disguising them, chipped potatoes, potatoe wedges, plain tiny taters and of course mashed.
@BellsFarming well, that is disappointing. I know our local food chain Wegmans sells them. Salt potatoes are big in upstate New York. It would be cool if they would partner/ buy from you. BTW, I love the content. It's just fun to watch, and you seem like a great person.
@@BellsFarming I used to work in a crisp factory here in the UK, so am well aware of the mechanical issues you face, mud wears out steel in no time, the fact that was a constant battle to maintain grader's to size the potato, them "U" clips, you put on, then folded over to a closed"C" shape to blind the lot together, of course the company never purchased the right size.
Those small potatoes sell for $7 for 5 lbs down here in western Pa, people love them for roasting and restaurants serve them up with lamb shanks, $ 32.00 bucks
Thanks for sharing Miss Molly. I didn't know that cows enjoyed potatoes so much. We used to feed bread and cookies from a bakery. Looks like your weather turned cold there too?
Hey there Molly, So in terms of acreage, how does the Bells Farm rate with other farms within Maine? Large, medium or other? When is the best time to hit the beaches in Maine?
I had no idea that cows ate potatoes. I am an angus steak and potato man who now realizes I don't need potatoes anymore - they are already in my steak!
To be honest, the easier it is for us to get rid of them , the cheaper it is since we’re very busy, Larry does a very good job of making it easy , and treats us right on beef, so we treat him right on feed.
Hey there! Thanks for watching. And your comments too! I use a GoPro hero11 to shoot the footage. And I use videoProc vlogger to edit. It’s a free software!
When might you have Merch available??? Love your channel, can't buy your potatoes in Illinois I'm sure lol. I need a Shirt or hat or patches, stickers, etc. 😄
Yeah o guess he keeps them in the barn for the winter to keep the pasture in good condition. The cows seemed to like it pretty well. They are still hanging in the barn in the hot weather even though they have full access to the pastures now 🐄

To be honest, the easier it is for us to get rid of them , the cheaper it is since we’re very busy, Larry does a very good job of making it easy , and treats us right on beef, so we treat him right on feed.
I think Shane covered this accurately!
Hello Bell's Family, great video texting n background music 🎶
What video do you use?
Blessings
Very soon! We are working on updated the logo I’m guessing I’ll have stuff available around May
That was fun!!!
I’m glad you enjoyed.
I've never seen cattle kept indoors like that.
Yeah o guess he keeps them in the barn for the winter to keep the pasture in good condition. The cows seemed to like it pretty well. They are still hanging in the barn in the hot weather even though they have full access to the pastures now 🐄
Love the cows!
They are so cute! ☺️
I cant wait for yoga pants and tank tops! Farming has never been so interesting 🤪
Sorry to disappoint you, but she dosent do yoga pants, she does wear a bathing suit top often when it’s hot , that should make up for that lol
Haha like Shane said, I don’t find yoga pants to be that practical when farming. But when I’m pressure washing swim suits are!
Did not know cows would eat potatoes!
What signals a potato to sprout? Time? Temperature? Humidity?
Temperature mainly. The older they are,the more they want to sprout as well, so temperature followed by age
I have to look this up! Hahah Shane would probably know
