There is no way you heard them before as they aren't known outside Québec (french Canada) but if you like banger metal, you'll love this. Its similar to system of a down, or at least thats what the Americans i showed it to told me so far.

Ascensionism is also my number 1. Possibly my favourite song ever, absolutely gorgeous masterpiece of a song
I'd never heard of Sleep Token and was put onto them by a friend at work. The Summoning was the first song I listened to by them because I just started clicking on their music video singles on RUclips and that was their biggest hit yet. It absolutely blew me away, it was one of the best tracks of the year I'd heard to that point. And then the album came out. And The Summoning ended up being like my 4th favorite on the album lol. They completely knocked my socks off, and I've thoroughly enjoyed going back and experiencing the trilogy for the first time. Ascensionism was my favorite too, and it still gives me goosebumps dozens, maybe hundreds of listens later.

Absolute same. I love how they have a way with being masterful in each genre that they touch and still have a way of blending them perfectly. I will admit the title track threw me a little with the last bout of metal they threw in that track, but Ascensionism was beautifully written and masterfully executed.

I think there was a solid 5 months this year where Ascensionism was the first song I put on while driving to work every day
I knew Ascensionism would be your number 1. My favourite song from the new album was The Summoning but over time Chokehold kinda grew on me. However my all time favourite Sleep Token song remains to be Atlantic. Here were my top 10 songs in 2023:

I will never forget my reaction to “Ascensionism” when I first heard it.
I was closing my eyes, laying in bed while taking in the album for the first time. When the drop in this track hit, I LEAPT out of bed with a huge grin on my face. Also my undisputed #1 song of the year!

Great list Birb! I like what you mentioned about Dan from Tesseract and how his vocals are a hybrid between Jeff Buckley & Sam Carter I can definitely hear that. Is it me or are guitars less and less in the forefront of the mixes on most modern metal songs? Maybe im just getting older or maybe theyre just tuned so low nowadays but the guitars on songs dont seem to cut through or be as prominent or sound as clear as they used to. It seems like its harder and harder to hear the actual notes.
A lot of the core genres use guitars more for rhythm, not that there are no riffs but that’s less of a focus.
Some great bands with riffs for you are: Sailing Before the Wind and Slice the Cake
I’ve found overall more prominent riffs outside of metalcore and deathcore.
@@Rubbish_ I've been listening to deathcore since it's inception and it's only in the last 5-10 years I've started to notice guitars taking a back seat. I'll check those bands out though.

Here is just a lot of noise (more noisy, more listeners ?), grunting (lyrics are easier, because they doesn't matter). Like less forests on the planet, less quality music. All is commercial today.

Hard to name songs but.... HEALTH. Their sound just does it for me. After that it would have to be silent planet, invent animate, johnny booth and spiritbox. Huge northlane fan and dante really grew on me. Really hoping for an album next year. Happy new year

My song of the year is actually a tie and by the same artist. The co #1's are Enduring the snow drought and The blue against the white by Panopticon. They are the final 2 tracks of the album and are my favorite 28 minutes of music I've heard all year
Disembodied Tyrant/Synestia have released the best song by far in my opinion. Love to see them sitting at 2nd place 🤙
