This animation was stylistic heaven. Despite all the variance and peculiarity I was still able to follow it perfectly, a test to how we consider cohesiveness in the illustrative world.
I find the “are you okay? You’re like, really pale” “oh, yeah- i just look like this” part really funny because of how comically exaggerated it is but also because it reminds me of the “you’re practically glowing- maybe it’s just the lighting” part from fantastic mr fox, which is my favorite movie ever
i love the way you use neons to convey shock and contrast. it makes every scene feel hostile, like every experience the universe is sending to the dancer is screaming "skip the audition and take care of yourself!"
my favorite part about CalArts films is how stylized they always are. this art style is so cool; at points, it's like a modern-day point-and-click game.
this film perfectly captures that quiet panic of your body being, through no fault of its own, suddenly unable to perform a task you desperately need it to. doing all you can to push through, despite everything and finding yourself completely destroyed on the other side. 'was it worth it? yes? no?' and a sort of painful satisfaction at having made it despite everything. amazing.
The sound design throughout this is so immersive and satisfyingly crunchy, it could be considered a type of asmr. Huge props to the person that put it all together
Absolutely gorgeous. I can’t believe this doesn’t have more attention! It really shows why you shouldn’t push past your physical limits. The colours and shape make the whole thing feel very nostalgic, almost like it’s something you’re not meant to be seeing but you’ve found anyway. 10/10
This is lowkey how it feels to be chronically ill. You force yourself to live up to the expectations of others and try endlessly to avoid dissappionting yourself by taking a break. Then you crash. And the cycle repeats.
As a short film appreciator, this is incredible, but as an animator, it's *so* much more than that- you don't really see stuff like this every day and it's so refreshing to see stuff THIS unapologetically cool and experimental. The oversaturated colors, the orthographic perspective, wildly unique shape language, the music, down to the *frame interlacing*. These are the kinds of risks more people should be taking, and I want to try it for my next project now. I can't wait to see what you do next, whether it's your next student film or the next big thing!!
This was so good! I especially loved the ending sequence. The x-ray shots were super cool too. The whole thing felt fast-paced, but in a good way. Nice job 👍
this really is exactly what its like to be a performer and deal with the obligation to keep working even when you’re sick because you just feel like you have to
Congratulations on an absolute home run Lewis + team! Beautiful and captivating. Excellent pacing. The 3d insertion. Phenomenal and compelling in most every way.
i love how accurate and true this is in capturing the experience of being sick and standing up too fast. i also love the colors and stylization! especially the cool glitchy effects and stuff!
I really love your style! I got into those black inserts in 0:22, 0:36 and 0:54! Also, you are great at animating dancing scenes! And the frame at 1:05 is majestic! I love this shapes, colors and dynamic! You are so cool at animation
Damn, this is one of the first student films I've actually really, really liked. Loved the sound effects, shapes, and contrasting pacing and, obviously, the color. Edit: Oh, you did the Niki goes face shopping vid that's how you're so good
i sat here with my jaw dropped for half the film because of how gorgeous every aspect of this animation is---from the style to the colors used to the character designs and general atmosphere, this is incredibly well done!
This is absolutely beautiful! The colours are so vibrant, it reminds me of a hot summer day, and the paisley title cards add to that even more. Something feels very luxurious about it tbh. 1:00 reminds me of something you'd see in ancient Egyptian art becuase their poses are the same/so static and rigid (in a good way ofc!, I just don't know how else to articulate my thoughts). Really reminds me of Mritunjoy's Tradgicomedy and Howl's Moving Castle. I just love this sm :')))
I feel like the weird sounds in the music and extra saturated colors and weird patterns really portray how it feels to be sick. Physically, mentally, or both. Everything is just too much and sometimes so much that you feel like you’re actually going insane. Perfectness
I've seen a lot of short films like this on YT, like vewn's content--but this particular film oozes style in a way which I have never before seen. I'll definitely be given this a few dozen re-watches over the next few months, excellent job.
people like you are the reason why i motivate myself to improve every day, thank you for making this masterpiece! may you grow your creative journey and continue to enjoy your craft every day regardless of anyone else's opinions :D
ahhh this is amazing!! i love the animation and the story was perfect. it reminds me of when i used to force myself to do shows even when i had flare ups before knowing i was disabled (it's a bad memory but i feel like it was shown great here)
So in love with the art style. The use of color, perspective, how the characters moved and the pacing was absolutely chefs kiss 🤌✨can’t wait to see more 💖
oh my god ITS AMAZING!! its so pleasing to look at, the animation, motions of characters, colors, artstyle and the story, i love it all! its very very beautiful and it inspires me to create!
also, any chance you can upload/have uploaded this to vimeo? would love to see all these gorgeous colors and movement in a higher bitrate than youtube allows
I want to see more from this animator! Also this story leaves me wanting more too, but I like that it ends that way. We are left to assume that they killed the audition but nearly killed themself in the process.
I love every part of this animation so much. the colors and stylization and the character designs its all so unique and pleasant it feels so bold. Instant fan
Watched this while I was this sick and it captured the uncanniness of being sick very well! Even more uncanny when ur super sick and everything u watch feels like a dream
Saw the still frame in the thumbnail and clicked out of curiosity. I was not prepared for something this absolutely rad and sick and awesome and cool and so so so fucking well made. Bravo!
nooooo bae don’t die ur too good at dancing

it was low key racist
couldn't have said it better, thank you, this is the most unique 2d animation style I've ever seen
Yeah this is why I like Mind Game (2004)
I didn’t think it was peculiar really, just abstract. It was indeed pretty easy to follow.
Yet it feels so corporate and soulless
I find the “are you okay? Frick yeah that movie is ballers
that movie is also my favorite movie ever!!!
i love the way you use neons to convey shock and contrast. it makes every scene feel hostile, like every experience the universe is sending to the dancer is screaming "skip the audition and take care of yourself!"
by the way, i'm really sorry if this comment is insulting. didn't mean to misinterpret the animation if i was completely missing the point
my favorite part about CalArts films is how stylized they always are. this art style is so cool; at points, it's like a modern-day point-and-click game.
point and click games still exist yknow
@@why3994 modern referring to the art style, not point and click games.
Even more of a fuck you to the people that think the “calarts style” is a thing.

I love the visualization of that sickly feeling. It makes you appreciate the days when youre completely ok
The sound design throughout this is so immersive and satisfyingly crunchy, it could be considered a type of asmr. Huge props to the person that put it all together
I'm glad someone else noticed this!

Absolutely loved this, perfectly captured what it feels like to be so sick that you barely feel like a person, like you're just inches away from death
This is lowkey how it feels to be chronically ill. You force yourself to live up to the expectations of others and try endlessly to avoid dissappionting yourself by taking a break. Then you crash. And the cycle repeats.

We are expected to move fast paced in life
love love how it resembles old indian manuscripts with the compression of space ! mixed with the 2000's blownout colors its so unique
Sound design was on point as always! its incredible how many synths and instruments went into this.
this really is exactly what its like to be a performer and deal with the obligation to keep working even when you’re sick because you just feel like you have to

The talent is talenting
The art is arting
The animation is animationing
The slay is slaying
the color on this is awesome! it’s like goodnight moon
i love goodnight moon thank youuuuu ^_^
It's hard to describe, but this short film feels like something you aren't meant to see, I absolutely love it!
The animation, coloring, sound effects, voice acting its all so beautiful and deserves so much attention
Ugh finally a calarts film that isn't about about your family heritage in another basic Disney animation style
i love how accurate and true this is in capturing the experience of being sick and standing up too fast. i also love the colors and stylization! especially the cool glitchy effects and stuff!

this feels crunchy i love it
Crunchy like this dancer's lungs.
i watched this 2 weeks ago for the first time and it hasnt left my mind since. this is one of my favorite animations currently.

Love this, the colours and art style are so unique and trippy, the dance scene was insane and i really like how the beeping of the machine fades in
I feel like the weird sounds in the music and extra saturated colors and weird patterns really portray how it feels to be sick. Physically, mentally, or both. Everything is just too much and sometimes so much that you feel like you’re actually going insane. Perfectness
How is it possible the stylisation can look like this and the motion FEELS more realistic than Pixar? These artists know what they’re doing
this reminds me sooo distinctly of older eastern european films irt shot layout and composition. it really fits the vibe!!! love this
"Hey man, SICK MOVES!"
I am not exaggerating at all when I say I think this is groundbreaking art. Well done!!
i love your art sm lwk
One of my absolute favorite CalArts filmsss, it's so underrated
I love geometric artstyles. Sick as hell

This is so great!
The dancing segment in the end reminded me of a more gritty version of tuca and Bertie which is great!!!!!! Ur great!!
your animation style is a revelation! this is incredible - love the sound design too. so visceral and unsettling
you’re style looks like the corporate style if it was actually cool and they took the time and effort making it unique
Flat art styles are so freaking underrated tbh
Iconic each time
man this resonates heavily. getting diagnosed with a chronic condition at 20 as an aspiring artist. getting sick uproots everything.
The dance animations are so incredible. I love the colors chosen too. Wow!!! 🤩🤩
She ATE that audition up
I can't begin to tell you how much I love and am inspired by your art! Thank you having such a unique and amazing stlye! Love it 😭

Beautiful animation and style. Like Picasso in 2023!!
I LOVE the colors in this, most unique color scheme I’ve ever seen
BEST ANIMATED FILM!!!!!
The style and execution of this is so unique and masterful!! Definitely one of my top short films to come out this year
This looks like an egyptian hieroglyphs but animated and modern
this animation paced like my fever dream, in a good way! good job, i really aspire to have this kind of style
they killed that
I love how things just flow into each other, the colors and shapes are so mesmerizing
I love how at 1:05 it looks almost burnt at the top
Everything in this animation is just gorgeous!! Extraordinary!!
The shape language here is incredible. We need more of this!
Relatable as, at a certain point when you're sick, even while being awake, things just become so surreal.

love the whole psychedelic vibe of this
God this is so cool every little detail
I want to see more from this animator! Also this story leaves me wanting more too, but I like that it ends that way. We are left to assume that they killed the audition but nearly killed themself in the process.

Wild and trippy... But makes me addicted to this video, it's so weird, feverish, and really interesting. It's a masterpiece
That was some damn good art. I know that took a lot of work. Big respects to the creators of this masterpiece.
Beautiful film. Great job.
this is my favourite of all the calart films so far :3
the visual aesthetic is amazing, love it
HOLY MOLY great work!!! Your style is so unique and beautiful I love it so much
it's an accurate representation of what it feels like to have shit to do when you have a fever. i hate it. super good animation, amazing work
The way colors are used in this is so cool!! Everything is so stylized! The ending animation was especially cool.
Talent. Looking forward to your future projects
Instrumentally and artistically, this is a wild trip of a video
