  • AMD's Fiji GPU is the first chip in the world to include high bandwidth memory instead of GDDR5 VRAM. So... what is it? And why is it special? Who does it think it is? The PRESIDENT or something? It needs to get off its high horse. So we made this video to take it down a peg.

    To say it in another way: You could either eat a pizza in the traditional way (GDDR5) or you can create a Pizza cake by stacking the slices one on top of the other (HBM)

    I'll say it again, currently and until VRAM sizes increase the thing about HBM that has me the most interested is how it ends up working with memory stacking and DX12.
    Yes, it is undeniable 4GB is restrictive, but if the bandwidth increase means having a 2 or 3 card crossfire system with memory stacking is going to work as expected then it will be worth it for early adopters. Having 3 way crossfire system with 12GB stacked memory would be awesome once FuryX prices drop some and devs implement stacking support on new, DX12 games.

    • @dumkopf

      Raydeus What games surpass 4GB VRAM usage right now? I can only think of one: GTA V

    • @RaydeusMX

    So this is high bandwidth memory for the video subsystem. Ok, that's nice. Optane (name?) is high bandwidth memory for the general system. We've yet to see an example, but it's kind of cross between an SSD and system memory. They get that working, it's going to blow the PCI SSDs right outa the water...

    1:10 - Its not a silicon wafer, its a die. A small cut of from a wafer.
    4:10 - The limitation on 4GB of memory is not due to cost, but rather due to a limitation in the HBM1 standard. It only supports 1GB per stack. HBM2 will solve that and support up to 8GB per stack having a maximum amount of memory around 32GB

    The only new thing here is that the memory is in the same package as the GPU.
    Vertically stacked memory chips have been the standard in supercomputing for some time, it is already mainstream in SSDs (although that memory is NAND flash and not DRAM) and it is getting more and more common _on_ DRAM sticks.

    isnt toast not even on both sides because, well at least with our toaster, when you push the thing down both toast slots go on, and each slot has its own heater on each side so theres 2 heaters in the middle so the side facing the middle gets hotter much faster, so if there was only 3 heaters vs 4 it would be both more power efficient it would also get it toasted even on both sides

      ***** the 980ti only performs better than the fury x at 1080p. And it STILL has not been fully unlocked in ccc to overclock so you have to wait for third party solutions to do so. In 1440p and 4k the fps are either the same or a few fps difference for either fury or 980ti. The fury was marketed as a 4k card, and in crossfire sees a 80 - 90% increase.. while nvidia sli only sees 60 - 70%.. To water cool a 980ti buying a hybrid, or doing custom you're looking at 800-900$ There's positives and negatives to both cards.

    1A: HBM is a new kind of memory that tackles the problem of size, bandwidth, and power consumption.
    2Q:How does it work?
    2A: It works by attaching on to a interposer connected directly to the GPU/CPU via TSVs.
    3Q: Will my toaster toast both sides of 🍞 perfectly?
    3A: No. 😞

    linus, i want that toaster... we all deserve evenly toasted toast! :) love your vids guys keep it up!

      What's so confusing about the 1080? :D
      It's GDDR5X memory is just buffed GDDR5, so no real tech difference.
      But Volta and Vega in 2017 will almost certainly utilize HBM2.0 memory.

    maybe in close future cpu will get cache like this and will be no more need for standart ram? because we mostly need ram because cpu cache is so small

      Ulvis Barkāns I doubt so, ramdisk are the fastest thing you can play/work on. We still have decades before the possible disappearance of ram. Pretty sure SSDs will dissapear before.

    I need help please. I have a PC with an AMD A10 processor, 4Gb of RAM and AMD HD Graphics. I use it for 3D modeling and videogame development and I'm going on a low budget here. I am a big noob in this and I was wondering what should I buy, 4Gbs of RAM more, or a low-end graphics card (like a Geforce Gt 610). Thanks for helping.

    I like how everyone bitches about AMD gpu's having such high temps and power usage. Who gives a shit if they run hot as long as they preform well it doesn't matter and the extra power use is almost nothing on your power bill.

    • @azmanic
      @azmanic 9 лет назад +7

      pcgaming today I love that argument, temps I can understand as a point but oh no, you are paying £3 extra for power over a 5 year period, how will you ever afford that after buying your £520 (or whatever your preferred currency is) graphics card.

    • @pcgamingtoday5471
      @pcgamingtoday5471 9 лет назад +3

      ***** And they don't even run that hot anymore because of custom coolers.

    I think you don't need HBM,because graphics card like gtx 980ti with 6gb DDR5 = 4gb of HBM,so u don't need to get AMD especially for HBM if u gaming and all of u know that AMD is not good with drivers and people who think it will be fixed with windows 10 - you wrong! Fury x struggle from day 1 and drivers does a minimum performance boost and it means AMD fails again by releasing card with HBM ''titan x destroyer''. Please don't judge that i'm not an AMD fanboy. I like nvidia,because they deliver us smooth and happy gaming experience, but this is your choose AMD or Nvidia... :)

    Won't cooling be an issue with the VRAM stacked vertically?
    I mean with GDDR5 every stack of memory could be cooled individually, in some cards even being taken care of by a special cutout in the heatsink. Will the memory heat up more when it's on top of another or is it so efficient that that's no concern?

    • @MrHoward888
      @MrHoward888 9 лет назад

      ***** Thats why the fury and furyx are VERY VERY hot cards.

    • @imjoeking_
      @imjoeking_ 9 лет назад

      MrHoward888 Fury-X maxes out to around 50-60 c while the TITAN X and 980 TI is 84 c

    • @MrHoward888
      @MrHoward888 9 лет назад

      dukethedj 50-60c while pump and fan are screaming near 3k. A water cooled card don't count.

    • @imjoeking_
      @imjoeking_ 9 лет назад

      MrHoward888 Then why did you mention the fury x anyways? Besides, Toms Hardware got that temps with the fans at it's slowest speed.
