My husband used to play this song all the time for me and tell me to listen to the words because it’s how he felt. We married when I was 17 and made it 30 years before he passed away in July of a heart attack. He was only 49.
This is the first time I’ve been able to listen to some of it without breaking down. I still can’t make it through the whole song but I’m working on it.

The first night I heard this song, was Nov 3th, 2012, it was the same day my wife died of cancer. I was setting and crying looking at my wife pictures. I was thinking whoever wrote this sing, knew my wifes story. Connie came up in the old school, father and mother wouldn't allow her to date within out once of her brothers or sisters and that didn't stop until she move away and she was 25 years old by then. Two years later we got we got married, she had never had sex and only dated one of guy in her life. Marriage isn't easy and I'm not the best to person to be around if I'm drinking. But she stayed with, even after going to prison 3 time, the last time I received a Life sentence. At that time I ask her to give me a divorce, knowing it was going to 12 to 15 years to get release this time. She was still a great looking lady, but told me and her family that we would always be married until one of us is dead. Sadly, I ended up doing 27 years before I made parole. But 6 months before i made parole and got release, cance killed her and we were still married. So everytime hear this song, its singing to my heart and all about her. So I go from time to time, where her body rest, I play this song to her, tell I'm sorry. Praying that God will take me home, so I can be with her once again. Because Mrs. Connie was truly a gift from God, today I understand that gift and I'm getting ready to turn 60 years old. It was real hard yesterday, because March 27 was the day we got married. Thanks for allowing me to share a few word and getting this pain out of my heart, I have told my children. I told my children when they get ready to put in the ground, play this song for all that are around me. Thanks FossilMan.......

My take on this song has always been the reason why the grave digger would need to dig two graves if her husband had an affair is she killed him plus the person he had an affair with and she got the death penalty. Such a dark interpretation never even occurred to me until I read your post. My take on it is she's deeply in love and can't imagine life without him. Note she says "if you go before I do..." and "don't you go before I do..." Also note the line, "If divorce or death ever do us part, the coroner will call it a broken heart." She feels a broken heart will kill her if he dies first. I don't detect a threat anywhere in this song. She does admit she loves him "a little too much." But I don't see that as a threat.
