    Sooo glad to see you back. The Jin seems to be a bit forced and unnatural. Don’t get me wrong, I bow to the master BUT I think this tree could have been taken in a different direction and have been developed into a more believable specimen. Thanks

    You did show us what you did, and I like it. In bonsai, we must weigh the factors and make a commitment, and there's usually no going back. The tree is set on a course, and we see it through. What is the foam tape? A type of weather stripping? Have you used it much for other trees? I have some of that stuff around, if that's what it is.

    • @AppalachianBonsai
      @AppalachianBonsai  4 года назад +1

      It was a strip of rubber from an old tire inner tube. Cuts easily, stretches easily, cushions well. It only lasts a year or two in the sun before cracking, but by that point the wire needs to be replaced anyway if at all.

    Everyone has great airlayer/wiring/repot how-to’s, but I haven’t found a good scheduling video that talks about which times of the year to do all these things on various species. There’s a niche to fill!

      @@AppalachianBonsai that would be great... But be careful with dates because every region has it's own climate/ weather patterns. So if you can incorporate what to look for in a tree (butts must be this size... After the the new growth has this amount of leafs) would be very helpful. But looking forward for a video like that.

    first of all thank you for taking the time to do these videos. No one else has videos on some of the native eastern united states trees like you are working with. I have a lot of the same trees as you here in W.V.
    I read the article in the Salem times that is about you, it says you have a eastern red ceder. I was wondering if you have ever shown it in a video and I missed it. If not, it would be awesome to see it in a video, maybe a walk through of all your trees would be awesome.

    • @AppalachianBonsai
      @AppalachianBonsai  4 года назад

      The one red cedar I have left has a really cool trunk, but the foliage has been hard to maintain. Red cedar is actually a juniper (J. virginiana) and it produces both mature & juvenile foliage. However, its juvenile foliage (the spiky stuff) is more prominent, which makes it difficult to ramify. If you cut it the branch, it produces juvenile from mature scale foliage. A year or two later it will have mature again, but then you need to prune. There are some varietals of red cedar I've also used, like Gray Owl, but I'm still trying to figure it out. The N.C. Arboretum has a few nice specimens.

      @josiehardy6988 4 года назад

      @@AppalachianBonsai okay thank you, I have two J. virginiana and that is what I am running into with the foliage also. I will have to check those out, at the N.C. Arboretum. Thanks again, keep up the good work, love to see new videos from your channel every time you make a new one. Because I have a lot of the same species as your native trees you have and it helps me figure out how to treat them.

    How did this pine do after a year?

    • @AppalachianBonsai
      @AppalachianBonsai  3 года назад

      It did great until winter, then died. I think it was the deep pot I put it into. Japanese black pine doesn't like a lot of water, and we had a wet winter. The pot remained really wet, and was soaked when I removed the dead tree from it this spring. It truly sucked to lose. That's a super hard lesson learned

    For me the work on my bonsai is a kind of meditation so the music don't fit. Just my opinion. The mugo is great. Greets from germany.

    • @AppalachianBonsai
      @AppalachianBonsai  4 года назад +1

      That's a fair point. I agree the meditation of getting lost in your work is powerful. It's physiologically and psychologically pleasurable. It's the reason I didn't pause to speak more than I did, as I was grateful to be lost in the process of pruning and wiring. I don't always listen to music, but I definitely did during the filming process of this pine. And being a creative, I find all manner of music pleasing depending on context of mood. This music was my current mood. Sometimes it's Pink Floyd, or Sturgill Simpson, or Beethoven, or Toots & the Maytals. What type of music puts you in the mood? Not necessarily with bonsai, but it your own creative moments? Maybe I can put some of that into a future video!

    • @andyt.80
      @andyt.80 4 года назад

      @@AppalachianBonsai Thanks for your interesting answer. I understand that and if you felt this music at that moment, it is easy to include it in your video. In my regular work I like to listen to Epica (as an example - Design your Universe), Nightwish (especially Ghost Love Score), on the PC when I design, mostly only Lofi hip hop radio, with my Bonsai, Music from Aiva, Meditation Music, one Song that I love is: Exist Strategy - Winding Down or Samadhi (Part 1 and 2, with nice music which is more like an audio book about self-exploration, but I could listen to it almost every day. Maybe you will take the time to do so.
