Our Hippopotamus Defense series continues with a great game by GM Pavel Blatny. Whether you are a seasoned Hippo chess opening player, or if you just heard about the Hippo Defense for the first time, we hop you enjoy this video! We look to cover the chess moves, chess ideas, chess strategy, chess theory, chess tricks, chess traps, chess lines, and chess variations of the Hippopotamus Defense (hippo defense, hippo opening, hippo defence, hippopotamus defence, hippo chess defense, hippo chess opening, etc.) and how you can use this as a chess opening for black and/or chess opening for white to bring you strong results! This is a good chess opening for beginners, good chess opening for intermediate players, and good chess opening for advanced players as well. It all depends on your style of play, but I reached the National Master (NM) title by playing nothing but the Hippo, and I hope you like the chess opening option too!

I have a suggestion: could you please talk more about pawn structure when playing the Hippo Defense? I think it's one of the important things we should know when using this defense.

hi Solomon have you thought of sharing your questions regarding the moves on the queenside that Kasparov did in the Hippo game that you analyzed. I’ve reached out to SME in the past and people will many times appreciate your questions especially if I come with a humble tone.
A lot of Hippo games actually end up looking like this.
After those first ten moves, things can quickly go crazy with the Hippo player at the driver's seat.
And for such a "passive" opening, pushing pawns in front of our King at the correct times is actually one of the key attacking ideas in the Hippo.
That, and never giving up our Bishops as long as they have potential.
