Lol🤔😆😆 as it takes only a couple listens of "Unleashed In the East" and you Quickly Realize that Both Guitarist' Guitar Sound~ is Either on the Left or Right Speaker...then you Realize that ONE Of Them Guitar Player's on "Unleashed" is a Bit More Jammin'/Ripping! Few More Skills!, and That PRIEST Guitarist your Noticing is Glenn Tipton!!

Tipton is an absolute monster, completely unique lead style (the perfect blend of blues and classical) with insane chops/technique for days and taste more than anything, great songwriter too. The perfect example of a guitarist who only got better with age. His solo album shows it all off, as does every Priest album for that matter. Check out the lead work he did for the Brutal Legend video game back in 2009, he was already diagnosed with Parkinson's and plays every lick perfectly. Pound for pound the greatest metal guitarist of his era, and one of the all time greats.
This group is beyond influential, they forged their thing where others were going alone with the crowd. Love the Priest! Thanks for doing this episode David. :)
I say this with all due respect: You have to be one of the best guitar instructors on this platform. There are plenty of good guitar instructors on here, but you possess both the technical skills and phrasing goods. It’s very much appreciated (and you explain things clearly). As for this video specifically; Glen Tipton has been UNDER-rated as a guitar God by many for unknown reasons. His phrasing as you mentioned, was as beautiful melodically as it was powerful and full of attack. It’s rare to find guitarists in metal that can literately make their guitars “sing.” EVH was obviously one of those who could do it, Clapton yes, but in that same vain, so too could Tipton… and in many ways he is better at it (since he was blues based and had many classical skills as well). Truly a guitar God, and it is cruel that Parkinson’s Disease robbed him of the one thing he loved doing his entire life. Not to start a KK vs Tipton war, as I know KK has many loyal fans as well… but there never really was any doubt as to who was really the better of the two; KK fully admits Glen was simply way more refined and skilled than he ever could be. KK was always entertaining, and a pleasure to watch live on stage. I’ve gone to many Priest shows and KK (like you mentioned) IS a wild man, while makes for a truly entertaining event! He did break a string during one show I was at during Sinner… so it happens lol. KK & Glen balanced each other out on stage in a way many other bands tried to copy, but never managed to equal. Even in terms of “tone”, Glen had the more mid-scooped tone which was buttery smooth, and KK had more mids and treble boosted sounds which again, just balanced things out. I pity kids today that missed the Priest experience in its heyday.
Perhaps it’s tough to do this David, but... if it’s possible would you do an expanded video of the EVH Late Night Lessons segment about his rhythm playing. IMO, at least, his always in the pocket groove, use of triads, inventive drop D chords and MUCH more is, like, his secret sauce. And you’re among the best at getting to the essence of guitarist’s “chordplay.” ✌️
I’m going to enjoy this one! As a British fan I grew up with Priest and with the NWOBHM. Unleashed in the East is one of my all time favourites, as well as Stained Class. I lost touch with them for a while but I think their latest album Firepower is the best thing they’ve done since British Steel. David you are a star. Would it ever be possible for you to make a lesson regarding practical applications of modal theory in a metal/rock context? Literally the thought process of why the *insert scale* is used here or just a simple guide type lesson where you explain what influences your decisions when making note choices where you have multiple available scales over any/current chord that's playing in the background? I know this might be a very vague description, but best I can come up with right now is the note choices (and how to get better at it) that portray certain emotions in YOUR or others music or improvisation?
Awesome Dave. Been waiting for this. Next time around please do some actual chordplay. They had some awesome powerchord riffs too! British Steel is a perfect example. I remember a show starting with Halford driving onto stage on a Harley! Glen and KK were smokin'.
Priest are sounding the best they have in years with Richie Faulkner. K.K. can sling insults all he wants, Glenn played circles around him. He had the chops to play the crazy stuff like the solo in All Guns Blazing and the stuff you showed here but he also knew when to pull back and has some of the most tasteful, restrained, emotive soloing in songs like Invader and Solar Angels. His licks and runs had this weird kind of legato slur that would sometimes have this momentum where they would start slow and end fast but was never sloppy and is instantly identifiable as Glenn. As much as they were innovators, they also had their ear to the ground. From Defenders of the Faith through to Ram It Down you can hear their playing takes a quantum leap and I'm sure they were taking stripes from bands like Racer X who of course they poached Scott Travis from and the singer was friends with Rob Halford. If you're going to continue with guitar duo's for next metal month, I implore you to look into the most underrated guitar duo in metal, Gary Holt and Rick Hunolt from Exodus
KK Downing has a VHS video lessons on youtube, make a lesson from taking licks from that VHS video but also early 1974-1980 priest KK downing and Glenn Tipton use some unique chords and lead line. Been nice to have a video lesson on there licks in the 70's

Some Adrian Smith with Roy Z ,guitars on Bruce Dickinson's Chemical Wedding is well worth checking out. Some sweet riffs, solos and Bruce air raiding vocals, this album has been overlooked I reckon
I'm baffled why "Reckless" (From Turbo) wasn't more popular or played live when it came out. That solo is so expressive and feel to it. SFV, DOTF, are my two most favorites, altho I like them all. Each album got better than the last one. More respect now for Glenn, what a sleeper, non flashy player. If anything, way laid back, he looks like he's playing slow and effortless. Thanks again B🐓!!
When "Turbo" came out, a lot of folks were scratching their heads a little and thinking it was kind of a mellow album. Then "Painkiller" came along and blew the whole Metal World away!

I lost contact with them in the late 80s (got busy with life and other things) but reconnected when Painkiller hit the scene - man, that was a brutal (in a good way) song.
Just got Halford's Confess yesterday, I'm 180 pages in and loving it, a lot better than KK's book. Judas Priest's early songs are most responsible for my developing my playing. Learning the solo to Beyond the Realms of Death was able to lead me on to other songs I wanted to tackle, like Orion by Metallica and Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden.
If by chance you do more priest could you please include your interpretation of Hellion ' Electric Eye' I have seen other's do both Glenn' and K.K's part's together but there is almost always something that doesn't sound quite right. I think you would be the one to just nail it Dave.
just not really what i prefer. i didn't mind some of Rob Halford's solo stuff in the 90's , like Fight or Two. i respect the influence that Judas Priest and similar bands had , but was just not my taste
Cool Priest demo! I really like those two as a team to trade leads. Because their styles are so different. I think Glenn has a background in piano whereas Ken is a little more primeval. I love those KxK guitars Ken was using with the double ball floyds and the scalloped boards. That classic stuff in a song like Rapid Fire when they're trading back and forth. I'm just going to take your word for it on those stretch licks though haha!

KK's part was from a song called The Rage off of British Steel. That footage was from 30th anniversary tour for the album. Another interesting bit of info about KK. He has played scalloped necks since a hand injury around 85. I've never played a scalloped neck but there is some claims that they can be easier to play if you have suffered a hand or wrist injury?
I just like your relaxed and at the same time so fascinated way of dealing with music. Great technique and tone. Yes, I also don't like these internally fighting bands.

The undisputed metal gods will always be Priest. KK and Tipton are hugely influential and brilliant guitarists who set the benchmark so high that every other band after them wanted to be and sound like them. For ex, every thrash band. Yes, I'm also a fan of Adrian Smith and Dave Murray. Nothing comes close to the harmonic solos and twin dueling of KK and GT in metal. This is a fantastic video btw! Thank you!

I often wonder if the Tipton/Downing tandem haven’t been somewhat overlooked. Specially Glen was always a low profile discreet dude, and none of them really acquired the status of virtuoso. But their legacy is undeniable, and their playing slain!

i have been a priest fan for about 25 years.... but I had NO CLUE that prior to their first CD, they were a completely different band with completely different members.
The original Priest drummer was Les Binks. He actually wrote the acoustic intro to a song (title escapes me). Rob said that was the one and only time he saw Les play a guitar

If by chance you do more priest could you please include your interpretation of Hellion ' Electric Eye' I have seen other's do both Glenn' and K.K's part's together but there is almost always something that doesn't sound quite right. I think you would be the one to just nail it Dave.

just not really what i prefer. i didn't mind some of Rob Halford's solo stuff in the 90's , like Fight or Two. i respect the influence that Judas Priest and similar bands had , but was just not my taste
Cool Priest demo! I really like those two as a team to trade leads. Because their styles are so different. I think Glenn has a background in piano whereas Ken is a little more primeval. I love those KxK guitars Ken was using with the double ball floyds and the scalloped boards. That classic stuff in a song like Rapid Fire when they're trading back and forth. I'm just going to take your word for it on those stretch licks though haha!

KK's part was from a song called The Rage off of British Steel. That footage was from 30th anniversary tour for the album. Another interesting bit of info about KK. He has played scalloped necks since a hand injury around 85. I've never played a scalloped neck but there is some claims that they can be easier to play if you have suffered a hand or wrist injury?
Your not pressing as hard and you can/have to use lighter strings. I have a yngwie model that stock has .08 gauge strings.

The undisputed metal gods will always be Priest. KK and Tipton are hugely influential and brilliant guitarists who set the benchmark so high that every other band after them wanted to be and sound like them. For ex, every thrash band. Yes, I'm also a fan of Adrian Smith and Dave Murray. Nothing comes close to the harmonic solos and twin dueling of KK and GT in metal. This is a fantastic video btw! Thank you!

I often wonder if the Tipton/Downing tandem haven’t been somewhat overlooked. Specially Glen was always a low profile discreet dude, and none of them really acquired the status of virtuoso. But their legacy is undeniable, and their playing slain!

I did make a post about this on RUclips/FB, but I wanted to focus on finishing "Metal Month" and take a little time to wrap my head around his passing - which was shocking.
It seems everybody and their grandma has posted tributes/videos, so I wanted to take a moment and respect his life/legacy before I added my two cents and created more EVH-themed lessons.
There's more EVH coming, but let's wait until next month.

i have been a priest fan for about 25 years.... but I had NO CLUE that prior to their first CD, they were a completely different band with completely different members.
All of Eddie van Halen and Tipton's strech ideas come from Allan Holdsworth.
Ed has mentioned Eric Clapton as a major influence as well
The original Priest drummer was Les Binks. He actually wrote the acoustic intro to a song (title escapes me). Rob said that was the one and only time he saw Les play a guitar
