  • When I send my Border Collie Jay out to fetch the livestock he often runs straight to their heads and scatters them. Or he will crossover in the opposite direction that I sent him. When he does get behind them for the ‘lift’ he will often circle to their heads and stop them. In this video I will be using training techniques on him to correct these issues to improve his outrun and fetch.

I have used a white stick ( a walking stick made from birch) previously, and somehow this thing confused my dog. I have not changed the color by torching it, so it has black & brown spots and is overall darker. It works so much better now. That white stick was somehow not visible enough to the dog. He was also a bit too fast, so I am using "steady" often. Slowed him down considerably, and he´s not able to get pretty close to reindeer, which we work on as well. A year ago, when he first tried sheep, he was very pushy so we used a long line to stop him. Unfortunately, I do not have the opportunity to work very much with him as I do not have a frame and have to rely on people letting me try him on their stock. - you can see him work with reindeer here - ruclips.net/video/1sbsyL-O4ow/видео.html

Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed watching the video. Very interesting working reindeer. Beautiful, nice dog. It sounds like you are doing a good job with training. Sometimes I use a flag whip that we use to move cattle instead of the white staff. I whip the flag toward the dog making a swooshing noise to get the dog to move out. I position myself halfway between the dog and the livestock before sending the dog out to fetch. Take care
