How do I get a sound out of this Shepherd’s Whistle?!
With regards to Shepherd’s whistles, the most common question I get asked is, “How do I get a sound out of this thing?” In this video I demonstrate how to begin whistling on my Logan shepherd’s whistle in hopes to make it a little easier for you to get started. I’ll share a set of whistle commands that I will be teaching my border collie pup. #herdingdogs #shepherdwhistles #bordercollie #whistlecommands #sheep #cowdog

Kit, my Border Collie puppy learning “here” and “look back “commands

Kit, my border collie puppy is now 12 months old. My son and I are continuing her training. Today we are working on “here “ and “look back “. The “here” command means for the dog to come toward the handler until the handler stops the dog in the better position to influence the livestock to go where you want them to go. The “look back “ command means to literally look back and go gather the live...

I sent this video to a colleague shepherd of mine and she messaged back within an hour saying it was working. she's been trying for over a month now with puppy courses and various professional trainers and nothing seemed to work but this seemed to do the trick pretty much instantly. now we might finally be able to get her puppy in line so we can start proper training with the sheep. one question though, what's the best way/time frame to transition back to a regular leash? kind of worried the behavior will return once they go back to a regular leash. we're training a bunch of puppies at the same time (even have one called rip as well) and your channel is by far the best resource I've found online, so much thanks from the Netherlands (and I might be asking more questions in the near future if you don't mind XD)

@@zwenkwiel816 Hi there! So happy to hear the half hitch technique worked for your colleague. Thank you so much for letting me know. When we started using it on Rip we began with some training exercises with the half hitch lead on her then went right back to a traditional lead. It doesn’t take long. Maybe a day. If the pup reverts then put the half hitch back on and do some training exercises like walk, lie down, walk, lie down, for a few minutes to calm them down and pay attention. For your colleague’s pup I would do this exercise for 5 minutes or so before training on the livestock just to calm the pup down and get its mindset in the right place. Make sure to take the half hitch off when they go in with the sheep. It’s ok for them to have their collar with a regular lead rope on. Best wishes to you on training your pups. I’ll be happy to answer any questions.

first of great videos pretty hard to find videos where they go over the entire process from the start, most start with an already trained dog in the round pen or something anyway, when you tie the waiting puppies up to the round pen don't they interfere with the dog training in the pen? I was more inclined to keep them further away or even in a parked car so they don't rile up the sheep when the other dog is training

@@zwenkwiel816 hi there! Thank you for your kind comments. You ask a good question. Tying up the young dogs in training along the outside of the round pen does a couple things. It teaches the pup patience knowing he will have a turn at working. We try to keep them from barking and to wait patiently which teaches manners and socialization as well. I like them to watch the work going on to motivate them. It keeps the sheep off the fence line making it easier to allow the dog working to get around the sheep easier. My sheep are more concerned with the dog who is working them. I do have dogs who are very intense and adrenaline driven. I like to exercise them before training to calm them down. Hope this helps. Best wishes to you.

In this case Kaya helped keep the sheep in a bunch making it easier for me and my puppy. She also helped the puppy get excited. Sometimes if the puppy is really strong and excited the trainer dog will be in the way and it’s better to just work in a smaller pen without a trainer dog. If you haven’t seen it already, I have a video called “Preparing your new herding puppy for livestock training “ that will answer a lot of questions. Hopefully it will be helpful for you. In the meantime…I don’t put pressure on my puppies to work. I just let them decide when they want to work by introducing them once a week to just let them play with the sheep and discover their instincts. Once they start circling I follow them, guiding them and keeping them safe. Sometimes it feels like controlled chaos. Haha I have some helpful videos on my playlist of starting herding puppies. Hopefully you can check them out and they can help you. I’ll be happy to answer future questions for you. One more piece of advice. They go crazy when goats are out of barn and in site? When they are lose ( one or two together, they scare me . Because the run chasing the goats and jumping to nip / bite them . There mom and dad pure bred , I never had any one to train them . But they I made them to leave the goats alone . So they are in the midst of the flock like the great Pyrenees. My question if I may please. Shoul I hide / remove the babies from seeing the goats ?. I like to start training as your instructions . And Is it Normal for them to want to bite / chasing ? And Is there a hope to train the 2 years old mom and dad . They play sneaking at each other like cats do when they are laying low to bounce on a bird . If you have time to reply? @@gracelayoun7836 hi there. You’ve asked some good questions. Yes, I would remove the puppies from seeing the goats. It will cause problems when their livestock training begins. Usually I introduce my puppies to livestock then leave the training up to the new owners. The first training to do with them is lead training. I don’t do too much obedience on my puppies until they get started on livestock. Once they discover their instincts and get a good balance on them (meaning they stay on the opposite side of the livestock from you) and they have a good attention span, then I start the foundational training. In this video I’m saying the direction that my puppy is going but it’s better when they’re little to just circle without any commands. I don’t want to put pressure on them. I just want them to have fun experiencing and discovering their instincts. As they mature and start understanding that they are working with you then you can start telling them what they’re doing with the commands. Keep it short and fun leaving them wanting more. As far as the biting and nipping goes, it sounds like they have good instincts. I don’t get after them for that. I just tell them “bite” then try to redirect them to circle. If they get in with the livestock and start working/chasing try to set them up in a balance with your hands up then catch the puppy with praise and don’t scold. Be careful to not get run over by the goats. 😉 As far as the parents go it’s possible to train them but it will be a challenge to free them up to work since they have been taught not to work. I hope my answers make sense. I’m happy to answer any questions for you. Best wishes to you!

Thank you for explaining how you got the sheep in there! That is so funny, but I never considered that you could make an opening in the fence around the feeder. I use my round bale feeder as a brooder for my meat chickens in the spring, so right now, I have it wrapped tightly with chicken wire. I planned to try your training method by just tipping the bale feeder up and then getting the sheep or goats inside and then gently putting the feeder down over them. Of course, I could never get away with doing this with my sheep, but I think I can get a friend to just hold my two goats still, and I can tip the bale feeder over them. At least I am going to try it! My pup, Greta, is a wild child like Rip, so I think I should probably work more on the foundation training before I try this. I just watched your videos from last year on the half-hitch lead training method, which I am going to try. I live in Upstate NY, and I move my cattle twice a day to fresh pasture. I have not been able to take Greta with me to do this, as she wants to get right at those cattle and move them around, which really scares me. I take her hiking a couple times a day, and pretty much have her with me all the time except when I move the cattle. I am thinking that I should get much better control on her for her safety before I even let her see the cattle. I want to start with working the sheep first anyway. My older border collie, Ian, works the cattle and sheep for me daily. Ian has a fantastic outrun, but he could use some more of your training tips, as he pretty much always wants to go 100 miles per hour! After a long outrun, he will start to work at a slower pace, but when I have him first bring out the sheep in the morning, he goes way too fast. I am going to try your method of having him lie down, walk up, and hold. I am really learning a lot from your videos and appreciate the effort you have put into them. Hope this message wasn't too long! Thank you very much!

@@elvasvendsen7700 Hi there! Definitely not a dumb question. There’s quite a trick to it. That’s a training exercise I teach new handlers. My white border collie Jay makes it so easy for me. We team up and carefully use pressure and release with proper positioning to influence the sheep to go in. The key is to influence them making it seem like it’s their idea instead of forcing them. I only use the round feeder when the puppy is too fast and keeping the novice handler safe from getting run over by the sheep. Once Gina and Rip got a good idea on circling they graduated to a 20’ round pen. Best wishes to you.

Hi there! It’s called “Getting your dog to stop pulling on the leash. The half hitch technique “ . My friend learned it in the UK years ago and taught it to me. The dog just automatically self corrects. I’d send you a link but I’m not very techy. Thanks for commenting. Best wishes.

She’s 12 years old here. It really clicked with her a few days before this about watching the heads of her livestock. She just turned 13 and is training her own puppy. She’s an amazing help on the farm.

@@bwrstockdogtraining2723 It would be great to see an update to see where she is in her handler journey if you can get her to agree to it and if you both dont mind of course

I wish I could make time for traing dogs. We have 46 Painted Desert Sheep at the moment and I would love to have a trained herding dog. Maybe someday. Love watching your videos.

Hi there! I remember in the old days not having a dog to help with our sheep and cattle. I was lucky and had a neighbor who had dog training clinics each week. My son and I got puppies and started going to the clinics every week. What a game changer! Nice to hear from you! Best wishes!

Currently I don’t know of any. I’m sorry. There is a Kelpie Facebook group that might be able to help called “The Working Kelpie - Instinct and Training “. Best wishes.

Actually now that I think about it, there is a ranch in Jordan Valley, Oregon called Cross Creek Kelpies that has some really nice Kelpies. I believe they have a website and Facebook page.

What's the benefit of this whistle versus well, any whistle? I guess I don't understand unless it's just something you're interested in, why not use an easier to use or learn to use whistle?

Hi there! That’s a great question. I wish I would have explained that in the video. The shepherd’s whistle is a specialized whistle that you can change or vary the pitch, intensity, or tone kind of like a musical instrument or like our voice. This makes it great for creating many sounds for the different commands. Thanks for asking. Take care
