I left the UK in 1964 and the closing of the roads doesn't seem to have got any better in the intervening years, a small fall of snow (300mm) brings chaos
And that's true because I used to live in Winnipeg and they can't understand why people down in the U.S. get so anxious and alarmed about 2 or 3 feet of snow. To them, its the most natural thing in the world-like walking to mail a letter. Canadians are PROS when it comes to snow. Everyone else are like Rookies-Still taking years to learn something.
As an ex pat I do remember the problems when we had snow in the uk, now I live in Canada and watching this is just laughable, we drive around in a foot of snow with no problems, good snow tyres are a must.
I live just down the road in Watford Hertfordshire UK and I had trouble absolute chaos couldn't get through Aylesbury for love nor money on that particular day had concert in Aylesbury bad if I'd known her gonna be snowing they should have got the roads gritted. Bad Hertfordshire County Council
Ronnie G are you serious? But then every time I've been home to England I refuse to drive, despite learning to drive. I feel much safer on our California highways.
Ronnie G haha. You made my day...our highways are SO different... I've driven all over the U.S. many times and still feel safer than England I guess it may be that I've been driving here for over 50yrs. too. Have a great Xmas and New year.
Alan Cole Around the corner the traffic was stopped completely so the ones at the back of the jam were turning around and going the wrong way. The police really were needed but no sign of them.
Correct.... we just don't get snow often enough to need to invest in them. Pointless anyway in most parts of the country. It's no good having chains on if the guy in front, driving a rear wheel drive BMW is spinning his tyres trying to get up a 1 in 25 incline with a little ice on the road.
Lived in London from 1975 to 1983 and drove H.G.V's from 1977 to 1982 both in the U.K. and doing T.I.R. work throughout Europe. Every winter the Road Gritters would go on strike and the roads would slow right down whereas in Europe it'd be business as usual..Looks like nothing's changed much in the 30 odd year's I've been gone. Carry on and get the snow shoes out...Only now with a Muslim theme to it..
Ultimately its all down to money. Is it worth buying ploughs, and the extra fuel costs of carrying them round when they are only needed on average about one day a year? Countries where snow like this is normal are better equiped than we are because there it makes economic sense.
Be better not to post vids like these - it is just an embarrasment how poorly we deal with winter. I take it the Grit/Salt didn't work in these conditions?
The British government that's not purchase snow removal lorries because they cannot justify the expense for purchasing them. You get one or two major snow storms every 5 or 6 years in the UK so that means all of those snow removal lorry we'll just be sitting there.
ChesterWolf The Griffin And!!!!!!!!! Country should be prepared for every eventuality, the government is fucking useless. If they can't get this right you think they can arrange their shitty Brexit.
You may not need lorries. Just by snowblades and fitt them to a wheeloader or maby a tractor. (Im not realy shure but isnt the mountig some what standardized on wheelloaders?)
In the Netherlands the federal government hires lorries from contractors. The only device the government purchases is the brine dispensor. It works great: the government doesnot have to own the lorries and the contractors earn money. And yes, tractors are used as well, inside the cities for the clearance of snow on the cycle ways.
Your really not purchasing a complete lorry. You are buying the blades and needs to operate them. It's called Educating the Government. Getting in the right people to explain that, the blades are detachable and can be placed in a designated part of the yard. When you hear of a storm coming you load them up and off you go. Temperatures regulate the salt working, if it is below -10 the salt won't work as soon at the temps rise, the salt and Brine mixture will melt that snow. But then I remember living in Britain from 2002 to 2010 and in that 8 years the snow was getting heavier each year. It could also be time to learn about Snow Tires, ( Sorry Tyres) and learn about winter driving habits.
Lorries/trucks can be used all year, not just snow plowing. Snowplows can be removed or switched to other equipment like street sweeper brush etc. Of course lorries must have some kind of mounting system. Somebody could make very good extra income during those rare snow storms in UK.
Ah yes. At this point, one gets out of ones car and fits snow socks to the drive wheels. Shouldn't take you more than five minutes to do and you'll be on your way again.
Hi Vintage Lynx, I'm contacting from the Channel 5 documentary series Winter Road Rescue - we'd be interested in using this clip in the show. Do you own the rights to it? Please email me at - harry@specialeditionfilms.com Thanks!
oooh I can't wait to watch that show... you should use this clip as the trailer...I have never been so excited before and would love to tune in to watch it in HD
Really? Your deluded mate. Its four wheel drive vehicles with useless drivers in them that cause more problems then anything in my experience. I'm forever over taking four wheel drive vehicles in my 2wd in the snow. I've never read so much shit in my life.
That's a stupid comment ! .... So , you'll be o.k. when the shops run out of everything will you ?? O.K. when nothing gets delivered ?? You clearly have no idea.....
Jayen4 what are you worrying about you can use smaller ones to deliver goods there are necessary heavy goods vehicles they do not have the right tyres in this weather could be lethal and dangerous to other Motorists
Oh I'm not worrying , but people like you would be when the shops started getting empty ! For your information , there simply aren't enough vans out there to move all the goods that need to be moved , regardless of the weather.... and more (smaller) vehicles trying to use the roads in these conditions would make the situation even worse !
come on you are making the English look stupid im English and in this type of weather the plows should have winter tyres on and snow chains on board the tyre's should be enough for this little amount of dust of snow my god they waste so much money on other needless c**p they should divert that funds to the basic's like winter tyre's on the PLOW That has to go out in bad weather cold and ice and SNOW it make the English look stupid and its cost business money and time they cant get back (and just to say WINTER TYRE'S SAVE LIVES )
This is what was around the corner www.hertfordshiremercury.co.uk/news/hertfordshire-news/more-100-cars-trapped-heavy-905517
I left the UK in 1964 and the closing of the roads doesn't seem to have got any better in the intervening years, a small fall of snow (300mm) brings chaos
So in the UK, this appears to be absolute mayhem, while here in Canada, it's called a "nice day in June!"
Unless you are in the GTA and then it is a national emergency!
People in the GTA also don't believe in winter tires
Yeh in Canada its called a dusting but we have the proper equipment here large wing snowploughs equipped with sander & salter boxes
Greg Palmer--But you have 6 mo's of winter so back on the porch, nob. England is not a Canadian icebox full of hockey pucks.
The weather is like this every year in parts of Yorkshire - I bet there was people driving at the weekend down south, who have never driven in snow.
great piece of footage
I'm trying to figure out how deep that is, 3" of snow depth? I take it it just doesn't snow much here and there is no snow removal equipment?
does it say somewhere in the Highway Code its ok to drive the wrong way down a dual carriageway when it snows? 🤔
I used to live just past there in Berkhamsted....
As an ex pat I do remember the problems when we had snow in the uk, now I live in Canada and watching this is just laughable, we drive around in a foot of snow with no problems, good snow tyres are a must.
Winter tires better than snow tires.
looks nice though
Why didn't the gritter trucks have snow ploughs on them,? Poor management
Neil Johnson it did.... you can see it sweeping snow off to the left hand side
HMSDaring1 the first one has now i can see but the second one doesn't
The cities have their own salter and plow truck. Both are soppose to be on road salt can not be salted without plowinhz. Will not work.
I live just down the road in Watford Hertfordshire UK and I had trouble absolute chaos couldn't get through Aylesbury for love nor money on that particular day had concert in Aylesbury bad if I'd known her gonna be snowing they should have got the roads gritted. Bad Hertfordshire County Council
someone needs to learn to reverse before getting anywhere near a road
But the new driving test deems that being able to reverse is not necessary!
Ronnie G are you serious? But then every time I've been home to England I refuse to drive, despite learning to drive. I feel much safer on our California highways.
Yes it is true. Much more important they think is to be able to follow a satnav! By the way you do realise we still drive on the left!
Ronnie G haha. You made my day...our highways are SO different... I've driven all over the U.S. many times and still feel safer than England
I guess it may be that I've been driving here for over 50yrs. too. Have a great Xmas and New year.
someone? 4 out of 6 couldn't reverse...
Don't panic we know its coming we have the tackle but just don't know when to start to use it
I don't understand why the sand truck wasn't spreading sand and why the driver thought he couldn't get past the semi.
Still havent discovered Snow Tires and low Speeds !!!
They call this mayhem.just a tiny bit snow there.it would be removed instantly here in Norway during winter
First thing I noticed is that only the plow can drive.
Southern softies there's nowt there about 2 inch salt looks years old as well
Easy. Just stay at home. You know that the councils are not equipped to plow the snow.
"OMG, what is that white stuff? I'm not prepared!"
Nice video
Climate Change News Thank you.
You are welcom. It is a good work. Keep it up.
See what happens when you are not prepared for the worst.
That's a mess and a half!
robatsea2009 Agree - and is still not cleared.
un fucking believable a couple of inches of snow and this country comes to a complete stop....
А где машины с отвалами, проспали ведь снегопад ))))))))))))
that first car was driving the wrong way down a dual carrige way i wonder if the police would have done them if they saw
Alan Cole Around the corner the traffic was stopped completely so the ones at the back of the jam were turning around and going the wrong way. The police really were needed but no sign of them.
Apperently the drivers in , I'm guessing, UK , don't pack even a set of single rail chains during the winter months.
Correct.... we just don't get snow often enough to need to invest in them. Pointless anyway in most parts of the country. It's no good having chains on if the guy in front, driving a rear wheel drive BMW is spinning his tyres trying to get up a 1 in 25 incline with a little ice on the road.
TheComputec well said 😉

Why don't these gritting lorries don't have ploughs on them i don't know? You can even get a plough for your car??
John sweda The front one did gave a plough but wasn't able to get past the HGV's.

All highways have ploughs and they take about 3 mins to fit

That does not look like any fun at all!
Bill rouleau It is in a Subaru
Yaya white stuff
typicall english-3 cm of sbow and whole country is dead...
Can drive baackwaed straight lol idtios
A single 25 year old and Rover Defender with the right tyres on it would have sorted this lot out in half an hour without any bother at all.
Any car with the right tyres wouldn't even get stuck there... no winter tyres = get the fuck off the road.
Ah yes. At this point, one gets out of ones car and fits snow socks to the drive wheels. Shouldn't take you more than five minutes to do and you'll be on your way again.

Got to laugh at 2wd cars going out in those conditions... Nice job of blocking the road for the vehicles that can cope with the snow...!!!!!
Really? Your deluded mate. Its four wheel drive vehicles with useless drivers in them that cause more problems then anything in my experience. I'm forever over taking four wheel drive vehicles in my 2wd in the snow. I've never read so much shit in my life.
le chauffeur chasse neige inefficace
When the weather's like this heavy goods vehicles should be banned I could get through the no problem
