Start at the beginning for Steely Dan and make it a journey. Debut album Can't Buy a Thrill, side 1, track 1>Do it Again. Then, same album, Reelin in the Years. If those don't hook you, something's wrong.
In fact Steely Dan is the name of a steam powered "device" called the Steely Dan III from William S. Burrough's, "A Naked Lunch". The boys were fans of the beat writers!
Steely Dan started as a band, but eventually all except the two principal songwriters(Fagen & Becker) left, so they continued with an ever-changing roster of studio musicians for the rest of the 70's.
Back in the 70s I was listening to an interview with Walter and Donald. The interviewer knew the origin of the name, but asked why they selected it for the band. Walter quipped "we wanted a name with a little more thrust to it". They had a wry, sarcastic sense of humor.
If you’re looking for another Steely Dan track to react to, try “FM.” It was recorded during the same sessions as Peg, but it was used for a soundtrack. And yes, they really were named after a fictional dildo. They were essentially a duo that used many session musicians to get the sound they wanted. But they functioned as a band on their first 3 albums using the same musicians.
This track was from the album Aja. The record has a great combination of rock, R&B, and jazz styles. It's my favorite Steely Dan album, but all their records were very good.
Kid Charlemagne is a great one .. Aja album has many great songs.. the guy in the background doing the sustained “peg “ is Michael McDonald from the doobie brothers
Nice reaction. Steely Dan is a deep rabbit hole of music. They are only two guys, Donald Fagen, and Walter Becker with studio musicians hired to play specific parts of each song. On this song they had 8 different guys come in and play the lead guitar until they found one that played it the way that they thought was perfect. His name was Jay Graydon. The photos were of the musicians who contributed to this song. They definitely won't be the same on the next song. One of their biggest hits was "Riki Don't Lose That Number" You may recognize it after you hear a bit of it.
For one of the most amazing guitar intros to a song I highly recommend their tune "Don't Take Me Alive." And for some Doobie Brothers tunes featuring Michael McDonald, some great options include "Takin' it to The Streets," "What a Fool Believes," and "It Keeps You Runnin'."
You're gonna love this whole album (pronounced "Asia"). The title track is a complete trip. This came out when I was living near Monterey, CA (Ft. Ord). Used to overlook the bay at night with this on cassette in my VW bus - such mellow memories. They really found their Jazz Chops with this album (Jazz Fusion Rock).. The Gaucho album is a very cool vibe also.
Do it Again, Gaucho, My Old School, Almost Gothic, Aja, Haitian Divorce and Hey 19 are the next songs by Steely Dan that I would do if I were you. You can thank me later.
Metal penis, actually. Hence the name "Steely Dan". 😁 Looking forward to more SD reactions! You should definitely do "The Royal Scam" from the album of the same name. The whole album is a beast.
Love your reaction for the first time like I did back many years ago. The duo (Donald and Walter (RIP) started the band way back in the 70’s as a rock band then became more funky and jazzy later on. They use different studio musicians for every track and its working as the style and energy changes except for the vocals by Don Fagen.
Chrome! Phallus! Thus the 'Steely' name. I wish someone would explain their 'Yellow Peril' song. WTF is an angular banjo and that 'Finer Minor from China'
What is steely dan??? Steely Dan is the name of a sex toy. The name was taken from a strap-on-dildo, named Steely Dan III from Yokohama, that was mentioned in William S. Burroughs' novel Naked Lunch. Steely Dan found inspiration for their band name in the pages of beat writer William S. Burroughs's novel Naked Lunch.
Those pictures were yanked off the album Countdown to Ecstasy, while the song comes from Aja, about 7 years later. They had a pseudo nucleus of bandmates early, but they had numerous cameos, including Michael Macdonald, Rick Derringer among others. After Pretzel Logic Donald Fagan and Walter Becker would force their prospective musicians through an obstacle course of trials so they could get the precise sound they were looking for. They quit touring so they'd spend years perfecting an album before revealing it. Sometimes they'd go through 6-10 guitarists before they found the precise sound they were looking for. Musicians did resent some of it but would line up to showcase their particular interpretation of that Dan sound. You won't find a more crisp and precise presentation of very complex musicianship anywhere. It's immaculately filthy!
I'm late to this video by about 8 months, but since you inquired about the meaning: Peg is (arguably) about a guy warning his female friend not to do pornography because the effects of it will "come back" to her despite any fame or money she gains. One of the best parts about "The Dan" (for me) is the rather twisted, skeezy lyrics that tackle a lot of adult subject matter.
You've gotta listen to The Who album..Now, "Josie" might be the funkiest song on the album. My personal favorite, and Donald Fagen's, as well...The whole album though..Not a dog in the bunch.
I commend you both for not pausing the music and saving your commentary until after the song has played. So many people who do these reaction videos pause the video or music multiple times to the point where it gets annoying for me.Just let the music play and react visually but same the commentary until afterwards. Some of your subscribers and other viewers maybe hearing the song for the first time as well.
Crazy story. I always liked this song growing up. So 1 day last year I heard this song & decided...Who is this Peg they sing of & looked it up. I thought it would be one of the singers' girlfriend or something like that. Turns out.... She's a porn star....
What should we react to next from Steely Dan?

Kid Charlemagne.. great one
My Old School.
For Doobie Brothers - Another Park Another Sunday.
Start at the beginning for Steely Dan and make it a journey. Debut album Can't Buy a Thrill, side 1, track 1>Do it Again. Then, same album, Reelin in the Years. If those don't hook you, something's wrong.
You could play every song from Aja and never be disappointed.
One down, about 70 songs to go, all gems. Steely Dan is their own musical genre, and they never miss.
Amo a peg
Don't let the name fool you. These guys were among the most meticulous musicians of that time and mostly worked with elite session musicians.
I remember an interview with some guys who said they asked not to come back after one session. These guys went on to play in some huge bands.
In fact Steely Dan is the name of a steam powered "device" called the Steely Dan III from William S. Burrough's, "A Naked Lunch". The boys were fans of the beat writers!

Steely Dan is Donald and Walter, they came up with the name, they did not leave the band they are the band.
A great song. Josie is another upbeat song from this iconic album. The entire album Aja is fantastic.

Easily in my top ten favorite songs of all time -- always lifts my mood!
Indeed. Immaculate song
Do yourself a favor to make life better, listen to it all, and there is quite a repertoire…they just never disappoint 🤘🏼😎
Lulu's kinetic joy in this says more than mere words. I remember seeing them when they played in Auckland New Zealand - nothing short of awesome!

The music of my youth , thank you .the works of artists like this can expand ,
I believe Michael McDonald (from the Doobie Brothers) sang backup vocals on this one.
All in 3d! Foreign movie!
I could watch Lulu all day!

What should we listen to next, everything by Steely Dan is exceptional.
Gaucho, can't buy a thrill
Ajaaaaaaaa. What a creation. I remember when it debuted in 1977. One of their finest albums.
Jay Grayson was the guitarist on Peg that played the solo that was on the record, after several other guitarist versions were discarded
Bass: Chuck Rainey. Drums: Rick Marotta. Lead Guitar: Jay Graydon. Lead vocals: Donald Fagen. Background vocals: Michael McDonald.
you just scratched the surface of an iconic band dont stop there play on
Michael McDonald, does all the background harmonies.

Don't mess around ...
AJA should be next ... That whole LP in fact. Great reaction 😉✌️😎🇺🇸
Metal penis, actually. Hence the name "Steely Dan". 😁 Looking forward to more SD reactions! You should definitely do "The Royal Scam" from the album of the same name. The whole album is a beast.

Steely Dan marked my best years.

Please react to the Josie, Black cow, Babylon sister, so many to choose from on the Aja album and many others.
OK , I'll say it . One GREAT band, great music & a dang good looking woman to watch !
Chrome! Phallus! Thus the 'Steely' name. I wish someone would explain their 'Yellow Peril' song. WTF is an angular banjo and that 'Finer Minor from China'
Surprised you didn't do Aja first. See what I did there. But you should, it's the best, along with about 20 more songs.

I believe that Japanese City Pop is based on the jazzy and stylish Western rock style of the time.
City Pop is so dope
Another great song is Deacon Blues.
Lots of hits check it out 😊
If you look into them further you'll find a rather nice catalog of music 🎶 👍

Wow she’s gorgeous and he’s super fun! Subscribed. Looking for more Dan reviews and maybe doing some Zappa and Allman brothers etc.

"Ride a Steely Dan?" Okay. That's quite an opening line....
Nobody in the world sounds like Michael McDonald but Michael...
Try Haitian Divorce. Babylon Sisters. Huge catalog.
Jazz rock with a side of funk.
Fun! Check out Steely Dan’s MY OLD SCHOOL. Thx.
You've gotta listen to The Who album..Now, "Josie" might be the funkiest song on the album. My personal favorite, and Donald Fagen's, as well...The whole album though..Not a dog in the bunch.
Steely Dan are two musicians who employ the greatest studio players in the music biz. I hope…😆
I don’t understand. Do people not remember that there are women named Peg? Half the reactors think this song is about backside play! WTF!
Ride a Steely Dan & don't get Preg.
What should you listen to next, everything by Steely Dan is exceptional.
the name is after a vibrator
