@Redlineoverload Productions that hump is the blower housing used to blow cool air on electronics. Dynamics are the fan u see in top just behind the cab.
And after watching it run, I get so irritated with how companies do this. Is there a way to turn off the alternating ditch lights? BNSF doesn't have that. And holy crap that EOT is massive. Then again, so are the couplers. for almost a thousand dollars, I expect a lot more than what I see here. Then again, I run ScaleTrains HO and N, so my expectations are set super high...
My favorite thing to see as a kid was an Sd70 rolling out of the EMD factory in London , especially when it had that orange BNSF paint job. I used to draw them for fun as a kid.
Really cool train set. I see the "real deal" daily in my local area. Would love to be able to replicate a coal train with at least 24 cars and four engines.
Every time I watch your videos it makes me want to switch to O scale, then I see the prices and remember why I’m in HO scale. I did order a Lionel Strasburg 89 and am now looking to get a TMCC control system as I definitely can’t afford Legacy and honestly won’t run it enough to warrant Legacy. Keep the videos coming Eric and keep on rolling!
@@Ericstrains while I did think of that, I like holding an actual throttle. I also love taking videos of my models. For the time being I’ll use TMCC but might get the base 3 in the future and use my phone with that. I love the concept of controlling the engine directly with my phone but I love the good ol throttle. That reminds me I want to try the Soundtraxx Blunami decoder in one of my HO engines. Sorry for the essay. :)
Nice unit and excellent video. I've had the opportunity to operate these on coal trains coming out of the west going to the power plants in Michigan. This is a good representation. The only thing that Lionel doesn't get right is the ditch lights. The western roads ditch lights don't flash. They are on continuous with the headlights on bright and sometimes also on the medium setting, only. Either way, it is a nice looking engine.
I bought the bnsf tanker train set from a couple of years ago and it’s probably my favorite train item. I thought about getting the rocket booster set this year but went for the class a since they haven’t done those in about 20 years.
Great review Eric! That set looks great and seems to run great. I will say that I nitpick the fact of the model not having the little unit designation on the bottom sides unlike the real thing.
Thank you! It is helpful for you to show the details and the weight of the coal cars that was made in Veit Nam. I had my doubt about them. But you were helpful for me to ease my doubt. Your presentation is upbeat and helpful for me to enjoy your presentation. A caboose would be a nice add on. Switch it out with end of train device.
The coal hoppers in the set, are similar to what CSX uses. In Palatka Florida or “Bostwick, Florida”, the hoppers used for Seminole Electric Power Generating Station, are similar shape and style as in the set.
Eric very interesting with the fixed trucks springs. I just notice on my Industrial Rails cars also have fixed truck springs ! I agree it’s a very strange setup as they serve no purpose.
WOW THESE TRAINS HAVE REALLY GOTTEN EXPENSIVE $ 90 FOR 1 CAR . I HAD A 1972 LIONEL O SCALE SUPER TRAIN SET WITH 12 LOCOMOTIVES AND OVER 94 DIFFERENT LIONEL CARS . BACK THAN A CAR WAS $6 - 15 AT MOST ENGINES WERE $ 30-40 . AT TODAYS PRICES MY 106 TOTAL CARS AND ENGINES WOULD BE OVER $14,000 WITHOUT BUILDINGS TRACKS SCENERY ECT. TODAY MY SET WOULD BE IN TOTAL OVER $20,000 EASILY. WOW 😮
Eric How are you it's Victor from New Jersey. Obviously this is from the first curious how many more you waiting for. When I discovered your channel about a year-and-a-half ago I was strictly into steam now all engines have that certain appeal. I will say that is one good-looking locomotive. Well I take that back second-half 2021 apparently. I'm with you I don't think there's anything better then Lionel the detail is second-to-none also as a sidebar I'd love to see the knife collection I mean you show it to us one at a time maybe one day you'll take a shot of the knife cabinet having said all that enjoy certainly love your videos looking forward to the next one say hello to your lovely girlfriend your kitty cats and hopefully I'll see you at York this thank you
I don’t have a bunch of trains, but I have this one. The engine has never failed me. It’s a nice set for sure! The fixed pilots might not be prototypical, but it will let you run on in smaller diameter tracks. I have even run on 031. Kinematic couplers tend to pull my lighter cars right off of the tracks as the springs pull tight. This is on 054 curves, so I’m not sure if I am looking forward to losing fixed couplers yet.
I have a question obout the modern locomotives do they have a way to turn down the smoke so its not full blast, I just wanted to know just for reference.
I noticed in this Video a switcher on your layout that said Flambeau on it. There is a good possibility that is a model of the very same Loco that I grew up around from the Flambeau Paper Company from Park Falls WI.
Awesome video Eric!!! I was on the fence about this set but I am so glad that I added it to my collection because it is really cool to see it running. Debating on whether I should get the 4 pack of additional cars. Thoughts???
That's awesome set . But throw question since showed picture of Conrail and said swoosh Lionel ever make SD-40-2 Conrail with Nike logo or any thier special paint scheme? I know in ho you could get decals just wondering if you know if it's been done.
I’d like to know what the reason behind the cab light turning off while the locomotive is in motion is. I’d assume it’s some sort of real railroad operation that I’m unfamiliar with.
It's more prototypical. Typically when locomotives are running (especially at night) the interior cab lights are off and only the interior gauges are lit...most likely for increased safety. It's the same in your own car. You typically don't drive around at night with the interior dome light on in your car because it makes it harder to see what's going on outside. Same thing on a locomotive.
It’s funny - growing up in the golf cart business building hunting vehicles and some EV work it’s amazing how electric vehicles follow diesel electric trains they figured the AC induction motor was MUCH MORE efficient and it is on vehicles too
If you want to add some weight to the coal gons, add it to the coal loads. The life size of these cars are made of aluminum. So they are lighter than their steel predecessors.
I don't own any trains I'm not really into them I do watch a guy here in the UK his channel is Sam's trains I just enjoy watching his channel and a couple of weeks ago your channel popped up on my feed I think your channel is great the engines you show are a work of art There is one question I'd like to ask. What is the engine in the film silver streak and do you own one?
Interesting that it shipped from China. Based on my research most of Lionel's products were made in China and Korea from 2001 to 2020. As of 2021 they've moved manufacturing to Vietnam. The exception being Lionel's Lionscale line, which is made in Concord, North Carolina. This according to The Diecast Model. Maybe the moving of manufacturing to Vietnam is still not complete, or perhaps announced and cancelled.
Thanks for the video. I personally do not like the trend for more intricate realistic detail. It makes the cars too accident/breakage prone, especially bad when small children are handling them.
I saw the Bluetooth logo n the train box, I didn't think they run on Bluetooth, why didn't I see that, I could have gotten a legasy engine right away, If I had enough money that is WITCH A DONT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Laughed too hard at the apple joke. I wouldn't doubt if someone has tried to install a beer fridge in the hump.
@Redlineoverload Productions that hump is the blower housing used to blow cool air on electronics. Dynamics are the fan u see in top just behind the cab.
Eric, you never disappointed. Your one of the only channels that I can watch the video beginning to end without being bored
Thanks!
Agreed!
Video Notes:
1) This video has chapters if you want to skip around.
2) Retail price on the set was $899.99
The trucks on the coal cars look like a mix of arch bar friction journal bearing and modern roller bearing trucks...
And after watching it run, I get so irritated with how companies do this. Is there a way to turn off the alternating ditch lights? BNSF doesn't have that. And holy crap that EOT is massive. Also, legacy station doesn't have this set. lol

Great set for newer or younger people to the hobby! Lionel needs more sets like this.
Awesome set! Always fun to have a six axle diesel locomotive in a set verses the typical four axle diesels that sets often have.
Love when I need an answer on a product, I can look through your videos and always find something to answer the question I have, great video!
I wish Lionel would sit their locomotives down. They seem to be sitting way to high and make them look like they sit a box on some railroad trucks.
Very nice set, I love the BNSF paint scheme, so sharp. Great review as usual Eric.

Most of the new stuff they've been making for a last few years has bluetooth on board so you can run them from your phone with the free LionChief app.

Beautiful Lionel BNSF Coal Train Set. Quite cool.
Dang Eric, about the 20:00 mark, that train was booking, it was really moving fast 😊😊 Good job by the way
That is so awesome model trains have came a long way since I was a kid I remember the smoking steam locomotive was the big thing
I live in Gillette Wyoming and see the BNSF coal trains on a daily basis. This set is a great representation of those long coal trains.

Yeah, they're "Bethgon" rotary coal gondolas. A lot of Class Is, power plants, and leasing companies have massive fleets of them.
Been waiting for this video. I was thinking about getting one.
In South Carolina where I use to live they called those case knives Red Bone Case Knives

Awesome set. I got the stand alone BNSF SD70 #9718 this past year. I unfortunately had motor issues already and it’s back at the shop ):
Wait wasn't there already a video about this
I did a first run video a few months ago.
Beautiful BNSF engine
Nice coal train set

That's awesome, I'm jealous. But dang, you gotta be rich to run Lionel. :)
Love your humor
Love the set
This thing is really cool
Beer fridge?? Actually a cool see on a beautiful layout. Thanks
That is a beauty!!!!!
I have a question obout the modern locomotives do they have a way to turn down the smoke so its not full blast, I just wanted to know just for reference.
what do you mean by non operational couplers? you cant hook them together?
I noticed in this Video a switcher on your layout that said Flambeau on it. There is a good possibility that is a model of the very same Loco that I grew up around from the Flambeau Paper Company from Park Falls WI.
Yep
Is the Lionel rotary coal tipple still out there to be bought?
On eBay yeah
Awesome video Eric!!! I was on the fence about this set but I am so glad that I added it to my collection because it is really cool to see it running. Debating on whether I should get the 4 pack of additional cars. Thoughts???
If you don’t already have coal hoppers, sure
Hi Eric can you please get the Appalachian and western budd cars and shunter locomotive and a passenger train set ?.
Rotary couplers means that you will have to borrow someone's rotary coal dumper.
Does Lionel have any different sound sets? My legacy gp-9's have the same exact sound set (voices).
CSX,Bnsf, and kcs have rebuilds of these units. They car called SD70MACes
That's awesome set . But throw question since showed picture of Conrail and said swoosh Lionel ever make SD-40-2 Conrail with Nike logo or any thier special paint scheme? I know in ho you could get decals just wondering if you know if it's been done.
I wonder if the couplers are made as such to use in a rotary dumper. Interesting.
Eric are you gonna do a 2023 catalog review with someone love those videos
Yes, doing a podcast with Lionel that will upload here
Hello Eric very nice train set I would add a caboose and take the end of train off it feel empty without a caboose
Lionel is the Best!
No drinking and driving on the job, Eric haha
That is a great-looking set Eric, did you say that the engine will run on , 036 curves 👍👍

I keep hoping Lionel makes the Spartan cab SD70 ... the Illinois Central runs those ...
Do you know where I can get this set still?
It's gonna be pretty hard to find now. Best bet is probably gonna be ebay or a train show.
i always ask in my mind,, what function the middle rail?
Lionel runs power on that middle rail.
I love a good box
So, sorry for perhaps a stupid question, but does the audio transmit to a Bluetooth speaker or a speaker built into the locomotive?
Not a stupid question. The audio come from the locomotive only.
It’s funny - growing up in the golf cart business building hunting vehicles and some EV work it’s amazing how electric vehicles follow diesel electric trains they figured the AC induction motor was MUCH MORE efficient and it is on vehicles too
Did they remember to print Do Not Hump on the ends of the cars?
Nice train, Eric! The SD70MAC with the coal cars actually looks really cool.
Hold up, do these cars have rotating barring caps???
If you want to add some weight to the coal gons, add it to the coal loads. The life size of these cars are made of aluminum. So they are lighter than their steel predecessors.
Just wondering, with the bell and horn sounds, is there an actual close fit to the actual true real life locomotive?
Great design for the engine the best part is the quality crew dialog the horns choice and bells could use a little bit more work
What does a set cost ?
Kinematic pilots should be an option. For example, lots of people do not have the space to run o54+ for their layout
Nice!
What is the purpose of the different horn sounds, do real trains do that?
I don't own any trains I'm not really into them I do watch a guy here in the UK his channel is Sam's trains I just enjoy watching his channel and a couple of weeks ago your channel popped up on my feed I think your channel is great the engines you show are a work of art

Lionel didn’t move anything to Vietnam by choice. The factories in China also have plants in to Vietnam and they send some stuff there.
@@Ericstrains Thanks for the clarification.
I like it!
I was expecting the locomotive to produce a lot of smoke on the title "rolling coal"
Lionel... Ok this stuff I'm sure... Is fairly expensive...
The lead coal gondola is connected backwards..
I wish all freight trains were that short.
You do know that's a package date not the day it leaves China those containers could be sitting a week or two before it ever gets to the port
It’s the date when the items are placed on the boat. That’s what Lionel told me.
@Eric's Trains I've hauled containers once it's sealed it's sealed the ports don't open and unpack a load to add a date and reload
I’m sure they don’t, but nevertheless Lionel told me that represents the date that it “leaves” China.
The bell sound aint authentic. They don't have the fast paced stuck knocking
Nice 🗡️
Thanks for the video. I personally do not like the trend for more intricate realistic detail. It makes the cars too accident/breakage prone, especially bad when small children are handling them.
👍
I'd be throwing a chunk of steel or bronze in that coal car.. for more weight
It was designed to compete with the AC4400
2 rail O scale is best.
I use to run the real set 26 years ago, much better engine for coal.
