- This video highlights the movement of black diamonds (coal) to customers across America. It also showcases the merger between two railroad giants....Burlington Northern and Santa Fe.
The BNSF train is hauling a long string of loaded Lionel "Coal Gondolas" featuring items from the Lionel BNSF Coal Train Set (222210). Motive power is provided by (3) Lionel BNSF SD70MAC's. Two powered and a "Super Bass" unit.
The "empty cars" are from the Lionel Burlington Northern (BN) Coal train Set (6 - 31710). Motive power for this train is the Lionel BN SD70 (provided in the set), a BN SD60 and an Atlas GP35. Over the years I was able to collect all the "extra" loaded and empty Lionel coal gondolas for both BNSF and BN to have the long consists shown in the video.

You was trying some new ways in video, it was great ! Totally enjoyed watching the Don of model rail roading!👍🏻🇺🇸✌️👋🤩
Hello SRT. Thanks for the kind words. You are correct, I was trying out some new video ideas. I may do more of the panning in the future.
Awesome layout
Thank you Darren. Much appreciated.
Donald, once again you hit it out of the park. I loved the moment you followed the train and panned left. It really showed the detail and scale of your beautiful layout.
Thanks for posting the video!
Hey Jason. As always, thanks for the kind words. I was a little skeptical about doing the panning of the back half of the layout. It took me around 15 tries to get the action semi-coordinated and maintain a fairly smooth motion panning from right to left. As the lead unit kept getting closer my panning had to increase accordingly. I like how it turned out and I will try it again.
Beautiful layout! ❤
Thanks Steven.
Great Video, as a resident of North East Wyoming I see these amazing coal trains everyday.
Thank you Byron. I am glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic running session. I really enjoyed seeing the BNSF coal drag trains. Thanks for another awesome video Don.
Hello Roger. I am glad you enjoyed the video. I appreciate your positive comments. Thanks.
I really enjoy your beautiful layout.👍Thanks for another awesome running session.! 😊
Hi Mark. I am glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the kind words.
I really like the flat buildings. I might do something like that.
Thanks. The building “flats” work really well to mimic a big city and only protrude an inch from the wall.
Hello Don I'm getting caught up on your latest videos and I must say your videos are undoubtedly the best. I'm a stroke survivor so I have some down days and I love watching your videos to make my day a whole lot better. Plus they motivate me to want to run my trains around. Thanks Don.
Hello Michael. Thank you for the kind words. Much appreciated. Hang in there and keep fighting. My Pop had a stoke at 52 years old in 1980 and lived a good long life afterwards. I understand some of the struggles. Take care and keep watching. I plan to post a new video next week featuring Santa.
Excellent. Your layout looks great. I appreciate the time you put in to these. Keep em coming!
Thanks for the kind words. I am glad you like to watch my videos. I am always working on new ones.
hi Donald awesome video black/gold the life blood of in dustier thx for the post .😊😊👍👍
yep, the life blood for sure. I spent the better part of 45 years keeping the coal fired power plants running clean.
Great video Don, the BNSF engines really look sharp. The video really gives a great idea of your layout, it's massive compared to what I have. I saw the Chessie GP30 in the beginning of the video and I am glad it is serving you well! -Mike
Thanks Mike! Yep, the Geep is a keeper for me. Thanks again. We built our home in 1984. This is my 5th and most likely final one in this house. Each one has gotten bigger and better. My first was 8’x12’.
The BNSF Train I want to go with for my layout as well.
Thanks for the comment. It is indeed a great set!
DK;
Do you have the set 6-31710 ( sd70mac with 6 BN cars ) ? Does cars have coal loads ? I saw sd70 mac wonder if that was it ! Also how many more bathtub gondola set did Lionel sell separately if you know the answer. Thanks friend!
Hey SRT. Yes, I have that set. It was issued in 2003. The locomotive is the SD70MAC along with 6 gondolas. The Gons have rotating couplers. There ARE NO coal loads. I also have Lionel 6-17417 which is a 3 car set of BN gondolas. Issued in 2001 with no loads. I am not aware of any additional BN gondolas. There are a number of BNSF coal gondolas. 6-17433 (3 pack), 6-84028 (4 pack), 6-84033 (2 pack), 2222010 (Coal Train Set SD70 with 6 gondolas), 2243010 (4 pack). I have all of these.
Thank my friend very much for sharing this information with me! Found two 6-31710 on eBay 1 for 600 ish the other 725 ish Kinda in between buying and or not !
@@scottyrocktrains5649 Hmmmm. That is a tough one. I know the sets are not too readily available and when they show up the price is a little high. The wildcard is the SD70. Mine has been running great for a long time. I think it is only TMCC not Legacy so it may not mate well with newer locos in a lash up. However, another TMCC is fine for a double head. My opinion, if the $600 set is in top condition, I do not think you will find one much cheaper. It is the only way to get the hoppers unless someone breaks up a set. There are not too many BN hopper cars that Lionel made. I am partial to Lionel but now thinking about it, I am sure MTH and Weaver made some too! Good luck!
