Last week I got my courage and played for first time in public, after learning sax during about 20 months…. Thanks to all the great teachers on RUclips
Open mic? Or jus outside?
Hi. It’s kind of open mike in restaurant/ bar on a island
Great to read you post, whi h teachers will you recommend?
Jay, great interview with one of the greatest sax players. Kirk, is a product of God’s gift and Grace. He is for sure tapping into God’s love first.
Love this! I have been playing solo sax as a prison chaplain for nearly twenty years. I don’t play changes or even recognizable tunes, but the reward of tuning into the room so far exceeds anything that happens at the local ego driven jam that i can attest to A Love Supreme being the real sound check!
Thanks Jay! You are doing for saxophonists what Rick Beato is doing for guitarists. Getting these historical players on record for posterity. Without Desmond, most people would never know what Charlie Parker’s voice sounded like and what he was about. Thanks to you, we are learning about the living legends in jazz. You have my gratitude for this kindness you are doing for saxophone fans and fans of great musicians. Cheers!
Thank you!
This man is so inspiring and warm, kudos to him, kudos to who made him
Wow I LOVE Kirk Whalum!!! What a talented saxophonist and faithful man of God
One of the best interviews! I got a whole lot out of this one
I am so warmed by Kirk by his kindness and feelings for humanity. I also love his sax playing. What a beautifully spiritual person.
Had the blessing of following Kirk in the early (Houston) stages of his career. As much as anyone, he inspired me to pick up the tenor as a hobbyist. It has opened the door to an understanding and appreciation of music and music theory that I never knew. That appreciation means frequent trips to Better Sax!Thank you, both!
Good stuff. Thanks Jay and especially Kirk for sharing those feelings. As you both said, and I fully agree, music is a language and the best and highest use of any language, aside from shouting a warning, is to express and share feelings. You also reflected on a concept I learned a few years ago, Striving for perfection is a daunting, endless, discouraging task. Try to make today better than yesterday. Be that in relationships, the mundane tasks we're all face with, or music. I've also found that the reason kids learn languages seemingly easier than adults is that kids don't fear being corrected. We all need to go back there, be kids again, be ready to absorb the learning experiences, and the criticism, in order to learn. I'm old. Really old. I just started the Sax a bit over a year ago. And I'm finding that all that you said is what I need to do to learn this crazy skill.
Great interview. I remember long time ago when i was starting up on saxophone I used to listen to Kirk Whalum a lot because he was not too complicated like Charlie parker and John Coltrane. I just liked that spiritual, soulful, part of his playing. Later I developed the art of playing from my heart and leave out all what I practised...that's it and later, i felt very confident in just trusting myself. Thanks also to Better Sax, I have been listening to many interviews, well done!!!
Man, I love this guy! He such a blessing to not only the saxophone and musical world, but to everybody. That message really encourage me and my playing. I mean we’re all not going to be like Michael Brecker and we shouldn’t use that as our goal. It really is about playing music that comes from our heart and connecting with people.
Loved that Jay! Great interview! Such a warm hearted generous guy, you can’t help but feel good watching that! Gonna go watch one of his Gospel according to Jazz concerts.
Kirk is my favvvvvvvorittteee!
I want to cry with joy!!
Thank you Jay!!!
Great video! So many musicians struggle with that “voice” in their head that thinks people are judging them when they’re learning. This conversation was very important to hear that, even people with great talent still have that “voice” but learned to ignore it and vibe with their intent to be themselves and play things that resonate with people.
Excellent interview. I have always admired his down to Earth calm approach to life and music.
Awesome interview! Such a deep conversation, covering so much! Good quote, "Music is the best proof that there is the divine!"
This is so awesome. Love this so so much
My wonderful big brother Kirk 🎷
Thanks Jay, brilliant! As you know, Kirk is one of my sax idols! Catch up soon :-)
I love Kirk Whalum bro!
Hi Jay, another great candid interview with a great sax hero and a wonderful person. You are doing great stuff as always. Thanks!
I love this interview Jay! Mr. Whalum is such a hero!
Thank you for this interview! Much appreciated.
Thanks, guys! I too am inspired by great vocalists. Appreciate this very much!
Jay, thank you so very much for your interviews -- I find them soooo inspiring!
Thank you, Jay! Merci beaucoup beaucoup beaucoup! Je suis tellement heureuse de profiter tous les jours de tes videos et j'adore tes entretiens avec les grands légendes et profs de saxophone - plein d'appréciation et de joie!!! Je vie la musique avec tes videos! Danke aus Kiel/Allemagne
I’m with Kirk. Music played from the heart is the expression of life.
Wow great interview thanks Jay for putting this together and bring it to us. What a delight! Man his sound is amazing. Not to say his solo on Whitney Houston song is one of the most famous solos ever. Thank you.
Another First Class Video!! 🥇
Cool interview. The language/accent concept resonates, as the main way to learn those is to listen to those who speak the language fluently, especially native speakers. What's interesting is that no one is born "speaking music," but just as young children learn to speak their native language by listening to their parents, we can learn those inflections/accents to be more musical by listening to the masters. Totally agree w/ Kirk's point about listening to singers. For me that's a long list that includes Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, Carmen McRae, Ernestine Anderson, Etta James, Ray Charles, Sam & Dave, Muddy Waters, Bonnie Raitt, Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, and on and on.
Jay and Kirk . Mes felicitations ! A lot to learn about your exchange.
WOW....THE MAN, KIRK WHALUM!!!!! I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM LIVE!!
Kirk whalum is one of my favorite saxophonist I aspire to be as good as him
Great interview Jay! Thank you!
Great conversation and, apart from musical topics, full motivation to learn languages... :)Greetings from Poland
Thanks again for that great interview pleine de sagesse
Kirk Whalum with one of the smoothest sound 😎
You met Brecker and he was appreciative of your sound- and you were
to me in Boston one day. It pays forward. Thank you . I never forget that .
‘There’s that thing that happens in your brain ….when someone corrects you….that thing that helps you learn. 💪🏽”
TWO MAESTRO HAVING A CHAT,WOW TQ
Great interview!
Kirk can blow the big soul, like the great Stanley and Gene... among some of the biggest soulful players... big sound too...
So adorable…..🙏
Yes!!
J’adore cette conversation. Merci mec!
I agree wholeheartedly with Kirk. There is too much focus on flashy musicianship now I feel. We need to go back to the essence of musical expression.
Bravo kirk❤
So loved his playing and still think ‘In this life’ album was phenomenal. I am not a great technician but what I’ve discovered especially in Worship of the King is to give sound to the impression of the Spirit. As David played for Saul and demons left so can we inspired by the Holy Spirit make the sound of God that sets people free and bring healing and so much more. So the idea of playing prophetically can open up the supernatural for the gifts to flow. Like the prophets of old would say, “bring me a musician”
Thank u
Excellente entrevue
Didn't know u spoke French. Chapeau!
He reminds me of Joe Henderson. I had the privilege of observing him rehearse his quartet. Afterwords, he gave us observers a talk.
Seems to me that the best musicians are the nicest people.
If u haven’t seen that man perform in 1985 with bob james at da Montreux, go now
You should review/unbox the jean paul baritone saxophone
Desperately his banger 1989
Please what's the name of the community he is using to help people develop on sax " Sax Flop" or "Sax flood"
