      This is pretty close to the original lineup of Les, Jay Lane on drums, and Todd Huth on guitar. The “classic” lineup is Les, Larry LaLonde on guitar, and Herb Alexander on drums, which is also the current lineup. Jay was in the band the time of this show and that’s him on drums in this video.

    Love Primus!!! If you love bass guitar then you’ll love Primus :)
    Les Claypool is easily in the top 3 bassist of all time!
    He was the only bassist who auditioned for Metallica that instead of being told he wasn’t quite up to par, he was told he had his own thing going on and was essentially ‘too good’ to be in the band!
    I’d say that it’s very rare to be told that you’re too good to be in a particular band
    I think they felt a little threatened (possibly) of being out shined instrumentally on a nightly basis
    Having said that, his genre is clearly wildly different than that of Metallica’s.

    • @AnomaTaylor
      @AnomaTaylor Год назад +1

      I would say that it wasn't because he was too good, it was because his style of music was too different to what they were hoping to achieve.
      Either way, we got 2 goo bands out of the whole situation.

      There was a small venue in Tijuana called Iguanas (not sure if it still exists). We went down from San Diego twice to see Primus play there (and once to see Frank Black -also an amazing show). These were some wild shows with (slightly crazed) fans jumping off the 2nd level of seats into the mosh pit). I had a great view of Herb and made eye contact with him several times during both shows. Not the biggest fan because of their style, but you are just dead from the neck up if you can't listen and be utterly stunned by the talent and bizarre (brilliant) songwriting. There are lots of GREAT bands to check out at the pro level, but if you're ever looking for something a little different, check out Kick The Cat....a Chicago band that's Jazz/Metal fusion and stocked with incredible players. I worked with them a handful of times and the talent level is just utterly ridiculous (the bassist once played a wedding in a completely different tuning just to make it challenging to play the set list while transposing on the fly). They never made it big, but man.....they were savage on stage.

    Been listening to them since probably ‘96 or so, 5th or 6th grade. They were very popular around that time, just in theme for me to start finding my own taste in music. I’m forgetting the songs but Les plays using a cello bow. He’s a crazy genius on the bass. Whole band is great and weird in the best sort of way. One of the oddest bands to go pretty mainstream, I believe due to “Jerry was a race-car driver”.

    And that bass player is Les Claypool, who's not only that good, but versatile, and a very kind and thoughtful individual.

    Primus. One of a kind I say unto thee. Saw them during the Bay Area golden age: Primus, Faith No More, Jellyfish, Psychefunkapus....

    I'll never forget seeing them open for Tool with a "Primus and the Chocolate Factory" theme set.

    I think the best way to describe Primus to someone who hasn't heard them is they are like Rush...but if Rush just took an absolute load of PCP.

    Big Primus fan from Montreal here! You should react to more, because they have two different drummers, one very busy (that one obviously) and one super minimalist.

    That “ bass player “ is none other than Les Claypool, second ONLY to Getty Lee from RUSH…
