    "Dust in the Wind" is a song by the American rock band Kansas, released in January 1978 as a single from their 1977 album "Point of Know Return." Written by band member Kerry Livgren, the song is a soft rock and progressive rock piece that reflects on the transient nature of life. The lyrics, inspired by a passage from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible, emphasize the insignificance of material things and achievements with the poignant line, "All we are is dust in the wind."
    The musical composition features a simple yet evocative acoustic guitar riff, initially composed by Livgren as a finger exercise, accompanied by violin and gentle vocals that enhance its contemplative feel. "Dust in the Wind" achieved commercial success, reaching number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States, and has since become one of Kansas's most enduring and recognizable songs. The album "Point of Know Return," which includes this track, is among Kansas's most successful works, further solidifying the band's legacy in rock music.

    Kansas should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "Carry on Wayward Son," "Point of Know Return," "Miracles out of Nowhere," "Cheyenne Anthem," "It Takes a Woman's Love (to make a man)," "Song for America," "Preacher Man," and on and on. Massive catalog. The guitarist with blonde hair, Kerry Livgren, was playing a finger exercise at his house and his wife heard it and said it would make a beautiful song. He went to the studio with the guys and in a matter of minutes, the song was completely written. I've got a book signed by Livgren about this song and how it changed people's lives: including mine.

    Kansas were in my opinion the best American Prog band of the seventies era.

  • @bookhouseboy280
    @bookhouseboy280 2 месяца назад +15

    Their most popular song ("Carry on Wayward Son" is a very close 2nd). The title track from this album ("Point of Know Return") was a hit single also.
    Kansas' unique fusion of rock, classical, and other genres was exceptionally creative. Throughout the 1970s, the band achieved enormous commercial success with 'Leftoverture' and 'Point of Know Return' taking them to superstardom. However, those albums' AOR radio classics are just a fraction of the expansive and diverse musical world that Kansas has to offer as the band's repertoire is rich and varied. Exploring their catalog reveals a treasure trove of musical innovation, artistic creativity, and emotional depth that truly sets them apart, transitioning as they did from formidable progressive rock artists to mainstream success. - Ultimate Classic Rock (edited)

    The giutar riff was originally just a warm up exercise that Kerry Livgren played around the house when practicing. His wife said it was "pretty" and that he should write a song around it. He played it for the band and there ya go... another hit for Kansas! Funny how these things come to life.

    I went to a Catholic high school, and the music director liked to use pop and rock and other genres mixed in with traditional hymns in the music for when we had weekly mass. This was one of the songs she used. It was already about fifteen ish years old at the time. But it did seem to fit in almost like a hymn. Two of her other choices were Open Arms by Journey (but had to change lying beside you here in the dark to sitting beside you when we sang it 🙄) and Up Where We Belong by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. I know she had others, but this stuck out. Yes this song fit mass, and yes it is definitely an intense song. Great reaction! Love you guys.

    Music critics (such as some at Rolling Stone) were overly hard on Kansas. Criticizing their lyrics here as "sophomoric philosophizing" This is a very pretty song that works. Kansas was tuneful. An interesting song for you guys would be Cheyenne Theme. Not complex lyrics I admit, but honest and from the heart. An ignored social topic throughout popular music in America.

    You guys are on fire. Another of my favorite songs, and yes I agree it is a bit morbid and sad, but it is beautiful with the harmonies, soft guitars and that amazing violin. It is good song to decompress to. Another song by Kansas is "Carry On My Wayward Son", it starts with the familar harmonies but quickly turns into a very rock song. If you haven't heard it I recommend it.

    Great reaction. Steve Walsh on vocals, one of my all time favorites.

    LMAO about your description of their hair! The 70s were something "special" when it comes to hair styles! Holy sh**!

    These guys are believe it or not prog rock. This sweet little song does not represent that. Definitely check out carry on my wayward son live any version. All of these guys are multi instrumentalists that guy just standing there singing? That dude plays everything.
