I saw Mr Cables playing in Port Townsend in '92. It was a place called The Back Alley Cafe. I am an Aussie and had gone to the USA to attend a Bud Shank summer jazz camp at Port Townsend. The camp coincided with the Port Townsend Jazz Festival. It seemed that everyone who was anyone was in that little town for those couple of weeks.
Mr Cables was playing with his left hand in plaster. He had had an accident of some sort.
The piano was 2nd rate: an old upright that had seen many better years. But that gig was the highlight of my trip to the States. Broken hand, crappy piano, Cables set the place alight. He was burnin'.
Thank you for the wonderful music, Mr Cables. You made my trip to the USA, worthwhile.
