My nitpick is that these arent remakes, they're remasters. The distinction is important because 1 and 2 actually have remakes in the untold 1 and 2 games with actual substantial changes.
No physical release here in the States was a huge disapointment as far as I'm concerned. But I am a huge fan of this series, so I bought the Asian English Import.
I always just pay the little but extra for the quick shipping option. Playasia has never done me wrong! And I usually have the game in less than a week.
The DLCs are actually just character skins from persona and shin megami tensei games. The physical copies also include a download code for all the dlcs valid until May 31, 2023 and you have to redeem them in either HK Eshop if you get the Asian version, or Japan if you get the Japan region variant. These are the character skin packs: DLC 1 - Joker & Ringo DLC 2 - Aigis & Nahobino DLC 3 - Demi-Fiend & Teddie
My Play Asia physical version arrived yesterday and I was surprised how well you can draw on screen with a Colors Sonarpen (unconnected off course). I might even go as far as finding it more comfortable than drawing on the 3DS bottom screen as your eyes do not need to focus between screens to do the drawing. I’m certain that mapping this way is quicker on the Switch than it ever was on 3DS (and I speak from recent experience as I played The Millennium Girl just last week to get myself ready). I love this new release even more after this experience.
It makes me happy to hear this comment. I've been debating getting this because I adore the physical cartography on the DS and 3DS. I feel very at ease now!
Great review. I love the series and can't wait to start playing the games later today. I think the DLC is strictly just 2 new character portraits for each game (so 6 portraits). And they portray other Atlus game characters (like the Main character from SMT 3 and 5). And if you pre-order and/or buy the game within the first 2 weeks of it being out, I believe you get those character portraits
Just the addition of auto map is enough for me to pick these up. I enjoy a good dungeon crawl but manually making 100% of the map always made the originals too cumbersome for me to finish. Still nice that you can annotate the map as necessary as it is definitely good to be able to make notes in certain places.
Question for fans of the series: If I want to try the series but am not sure whether I'll like it, which game should I pick up? I don't want to grab the whole collection at this point, so should I just get the third game? I enjoy dungeon crawlers and similar games, so will probably like this, but want to try just one to begin with - just in case. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
3 is considered the best, although class balance is very wild and your options are immensely higher than in the first two games. Some find it overwhelming. If you're familiar with the genre, I say go with your gut and pick up 3. 1&2 will still be worth your time down the line should 3 capture your interest in the series!
3 is awesome-the problem is that it has very unique classes (and sub-classing later on) whicu makes it great for those used to the original, more "standard" classes. Hard to explain the Ninja and Farmer as anything "standard", and the Monk is a healing class, as seen in Guild Wars OG and a few other games. Wildling is very unique too. If you pick up 3 first, go with your gut, forgoing the faqs, so you have a more enjoyable experience. You can overpower the game a bit if you go for the more common "powergamer" options. It is not that difficult vs 1&2, but it's a good challenge when you are not too overpowered.
Pretty excited for this dropping! Prolly gonna wait for a sale since the asking price is pretty absurd, but definitely a fantastic year for fans of the genre. ^^ The Dungeon Travelers games are also being re-released next week on PC, here's hoping for a Switch release!
Some games like EO were specifically made to be played on the DS and 3DS. I just can't imagine playing on a normal platform like PC or Switch. It just doesn't work.
I am the overeager guy at work forcing my way into conversations. And the worst part is that we're self-aware. No idea how I'm gonna explain this to Peter at the Pearly Gates.
Well, the remakes also have videos and some voiced cutscenes ... I get why they didnt but.. they lost my buy because of that. Maybe I'll buy the 3rd one.
I have all these physical for the DS, as well as the updated 3DS versions digitally, so I’ll be skipping this release. Too busy playing Labyrinth of Zangetsu and Demon Gaze right now. Also still need to finish Undernauts and already preordered Monyu…it’s a great time to be a dungeon crawler fan on the Switch!
Still cant decide if I want to get this or not, it just feels weird not being able to play these on the DS, since thats how they were intended to be played. Need to think some more.
All are good-3 is special, but I did not love the ship part, as I feel without a guide it's quite a hazzle and a bit cumbersome (not that much info in-game is offered, I feel). But loved the skills gained by that mini-game so did it anyway, and love the ship bosses music to be sure. Love 1&2, they all feel great to play and have great music-a bit annoying no XP on #2 FOEs, but one gets used to it. Haven't received my physical copy, wonder if they fixed the supposedly bugged Beast skills on that game (I feel they could have been that way on purpose, for better or worse.) Was Immunize on 1 "fixed"? No offense however, like what you like. Very happy to have #3 on the Switch for sure. 👍
@@classicalthrasher played the first one all the way through and really liked it at the time. Second played it for a few hours. But by the time I tried the third one that was like love at first sight. The ship part was kind of tedious but the rest of the game was pretty cool for me, especially the party tinkering with the subclasses. I messed around so much with that. Still remember my party setup from back then and I'm going to repeat it again when I get my hands on the game.
Super happy they released these and in a physical too! I played the first two on the DS and the 5th one on 3DS. I hope they release a second collection with 4&5 and the mystery dungeon game!
I love this game. Everyone wants untold and it makes sense for the 80 bucks but I’m fine with the originals. Edit: we don’t want untold for the story no we can play any jrpg for that. We just wanted the bells and whistles and the “regular” mode. I don’t even use the map I just do auto because let’s face it this isn’t a ds and it wasn’t my favorite part of the game. My favorite part of the game is role playing in a dark anime themed world where everyone wants to eat you. I really don’t care about the devs intentions because this is one of the only dungeon crawlers we got in the west that’s actually good. They somehow acquired the wizardry license and don’t even release the games in the west where the series started. It’s baffling and gross lol
Kinda wish they would add some sort of in-battle animations to the monsters in this instead of being still images like the DS games. I know the DS games didn't had monster animations cause of the limitation of the handheld but this is the Switch, minor touch up like that would had bring some life to these remasters a bit.
No EU physical, no Untold content, an unreasonable price, AND dlc on top... As a huge fan of the series, having played every game except for Nexus, and still owning the arguably better versions of 2 out of 3 of the games in this collection, I'll wait for a massive discount. Sorry, but not sorry. For anyone who never played them and has no 3ds, this may be a tough sale but weirdly enough I WOULD say it might be worth it... And the 3ds versions are probably insanely overpriced now as well...
I mapped out everything in the original game but without the second screen I think I'm gonna turn on the auto path and wall mapper. However I might not get it at all considering it doesn't have the added content of the 3ds games. The dlc is also a slap in the face, it better not be the 3ds content.
It's actually just character skins from persona and shin megami tensei games. The physical copies also include a download code for all the dlcs valid until May 31, 2023. These are the character skin packs: DLC 1 - Joker & Ringo DLC 2 - Aigis & Nahobino DLC 3 - Demi-Fiend & Teddie
So, the only Etrian Odyssey game I ever played... was Persona Q2. I have been kinda curious about the original EO games, but it's that the main aspect of the game, the dungeon crawling, is simply not my cup of tea. And considering these versions of the games (minus EO3, I think) lack a proper story as well as that steep price (even for just a single game) has basically made me not want to buy these games. A smaller thing I dislike is that the DLC characters/portraits are only for their respective games, which really sucks imo. Can't make Gunner Aigis. Very sad.
Not the latest versions; you don't draw the map yourself; the game plays itself; you can't remember the music; barely any story; old games released with prices as if they are new games... Take my money! Seriously, I've actually ordered the Asia physical copy, but I'm disappointed they didn't give us the 3DS versions of 1&2, and it's a shame they didn't do an update for 3. Hopefully we get ports of the later versions, which I understand to be well received. Edit: honestly I'd probably lower the score for the port job, just for there still being separate DLC - that's nonsensical for bringing old games to newer systems!
The problem is that there isn't a physical copy in spanish or other european languages...Only english! And the digital version have... Sorry but they wll don't see my money...
Never liked drawing maps. It's rly dumb, especially when you don't have a cursor or stylus. If I'm drawing at all, it'll be to fill in the parts that can't be auto filled and to place icons The HD remaster of the first 2 games are inferior by far to the Untold remakes. The HD of the 3rd is definitely the best version, since it never got remade for the 3DS I plan on picking these up on PC when they go 50% off

Played the third one for a bit. It is amazing. Looks beautiful, the controls are snappy, gameplay top-class dungeon crawler. Solid release.
I have never used full mapping in any of the Etrian Odyssey games before, but I think I will on this collection.

Heard so many good things about the series but always get worried it will be too difficult for me!
These are totally worth trying out for the beautiful art, if nothing else. Normal mode is challenging but totally worth giving a shot.
the rereleases have difficulty settings so there's a basic bitch mode now if you don't feel like getting destroyed
Just got an email that Playasia shipped my copy. Now where is that UPS guy, I want my game.
I wish we got the untold versions of 1 and 2. they were pretty fire, gave a very strong reason for a second play through

maybe they did not release the 3ds versions because they want to sell them later to make more money with hopefully an untold verson of 3
