- These primary students are from New Isabela Central School in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat, Philippines. They are representing Region XII for the biggest sports competition in the Philippines, the Palarong Pambansa held in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

I just got into Arnis and I love practicing and watching
Wow, these kids are great! Hopefully, these kids and the art of arnis will receive huge support from academic and sports orgs and our government. Sayang kung hindi ma-harness ang potential ng ating kabataan at sayang kung tuluyang mawala ang ating kalinangan.
Late congratulations.. Former Arnis player rin year 2007-2009..😊 Proud to be arnisadora.. Ang gagaling na ng mga arnis player ngayon kapag nagdedemo.

actually arnis is taught in the public schools as part of our national curriculum. meron po tayong reference nyan (R.A 9850) its just a matter of the skill of the "GURO" or the instructor of the said sport. ang primary focus lang kasi nila is 12 strike ZONES THEY EVEN CALL THAT SINAWALI which is wrong ~ disregarding the awareness of the Different Categories of Arnis such as DOBLE-ESPADAyDAGA FORMS. Anyo is a Self expression of the Manlalaro. no teacher is alike. every guro has their own style of teaching. marami lang kasi talaga na bida bida sa pilipinas (ie. mga teacher na ayaw magpakumbaba palibasa sila daw yung nauna kaya sila yung tama) kaya hindi nalago ang interest ng arnis sa mga estujante. relying only on textbook but not on the actual practical side. as a student myself i am really amazed at the skills of these kids. ~ PUGAY po para sa guro na nagturo sa kanila.

But very far from the real art of Arnis, this is not the way sadly. The problem is in the system. Great intentions in preserving and promoting the art, but teachers/trainors of the "school-style" of Arnis has this "puzzle-patch-pair-making system" - meaning what's good and what moves made the win will only be revised, reused, and remastered by the teams. Another is that some (not all) trainors don't even have a formal system of teaching nor recieve training from real/professional instructors of the art. With these and other flaws, Arnis will be promoted and preserved, but not the art it is supposed to be. The kids are innocent and obviously full of potential though! I say they are awesome! If it is a wushu competition, for me, they really are in the gold spot! The systems in the schools' sports curriculum are the problem. I do hope/pray that the one day it would change for the better.

Brother, be careful of what you say.
In our area, Arnis/Eskrima/Kali is still sometimes called Estokada (an old term for it). When civil matters in our area comes to fury, some men here still resort to blades in a "Pangabit-Kordon", our version of Juego Todo, wherein the fueding parties get tied with a rope so no one escapes during a blade/sword match. Some of my distant relatives were engaged in it, but I rather don't want to know who won or didn't. I am taught in the modern and also influenced by the Estokada format by the men in our area.
The answer to your question if I am a legit, I am in the traditional and mordern form, but I chose not to seek a fight nor use it. I always can but no need. Many times I was called to end matters with it, but I insisted not to. Troubles roam around me, in schools, streets, and even in front of our neighborhood, but I keep insisting not to use any of it.
If you'll ask me if why I do not need to prove such skills or if I only boast, what is the sense of a match if I won't gain a commrad, if my foe dies with hatred or non of it?
"Same old art, but different painters". I teach and display the same old skills and techniques in our lineage, but no need to execute to the point of killing. Killing is the illogical point. If the opponent dies in a wielder's hands, for me the fighter is weak - for he/she can't think of a way how to save a life or to bring new life.
With this, I somehow despise some of the men who resort to use this art system in order to be hailed "dominant" or crowned with glory and power, even my distant relatives who were engaged in it. If a man keep seeking pride and glory by gaining dominance and boasting a particular art or way, it is a pointless way to live life. What glory is there in defeating other men? To whom do you prove you are the greatest when the one you are insisting the subject with is already gone? Is it to the people around who sees you as a monster and not a hero? What a waste if by killing is the only way to win and be hailed.
I preserve until now an old form of the art as well as the new. I am not showcasing it publicly for I only teach it to those who deserve and it is not a major business for me. I am disappointed to what it looks like in the schools. I was once a player of it in our school. I would have won many times, but I chose not to. For if I win, I lose in insisting that this is not the true way. Before I left the competitions 8 years ago, I left a mark on the officials of that time of what Filipino Martial Arts really is.
I am not a famous practitioner nor a grand master for these titles for me remains only as an adjective, but I can say these things in behalf of the instructors out there who keeps teaching and promoting the original arts. Perhaps you know as well as I do that there are different styles out there in every region and area. The stickfighting arts of our island nation is not restricted to one form, but diverse indeed. Therefore, no art form is higher than the other. The arts never fight, but men do.
My foreign commrads and students ask if the styles in the schools are legit. I say the truth. The good news is that they are also happy that the arts are being preserved and now has a bigger picture for the masses. Yet, truth is measured by weight and not by number.
Brother, peace! I don't need to prove things further to you. Our ears hear what they hear, but our minds listen to what they want to listen. In other words, it would be pointless for a battle of arguments. You may ask me of stuff related to modern and traditional Arnis, but I don't show stuff by vids - sorry about that. I keep standing my point, the wushu-style of schools would never be the art form it supposed to be. As of now, me and some of my colleagues are formulating probable ways of having Arnis competitions without putting the wushu-style and patch-pair-reuse system, but I won't be showing these to the respectives until it is done.

The players are good...the sport is trash. The sport made these kids do a sham display of techniques with no standard. This is technically a simple dance contest and not a martial arts competition.
