Italian influenced cemetery in Far North Queensland, Australia
Sorry for the amount of "stunning" used in this video but I was definitely not expecting to find this cemetery and as you can hear and see I was totally blown away.
The cemetery is well maintained and it was odd that it just appeared in the middle of sugar cane fields but Im not complaining because it was absolutely beautiful.
Enjoy.

Hi anyone watching this. Sorry for the amount of times I used the word "Stunning" I was just was blown away by what I was seeing as you may already have noticed but I was "stunning" you'd have to admit.
Good to see you 😀 Don't be apologizing, I find myself using the same adjective! I don't think I have ever seen a cemetery this highly decorated, or as uniquely. Hope you are doing well ~ Thank you for the tour!
A lot of southern Italian homes in my time 60 years ago had a lounge room which was only used for visitors. It was always well furnished, expensively decorated and most definitely ‘stunning’. In this case it was used to say… even though we are living in a poor village/town we are maintaining a good standard of living. Sometimes there was also a show bedroom for women visitors to freshen up, and leave their coat and bag.The family and normal visitors use a more humble living room usually near the kitchen. I was always stunned in the beginning until my older husband and his older sister shared the secret with me. I knew I’d made it in the town when I was invited straight into the kitchen dining room!
Lol...Michael, you are always stunning!

He certainly is!

What a beautiful, dare I say, stunning cemetery! :-) Thanks for taking us along, Michael. The porcelain flowers were really nice, kind of a once and done approach to leaving flowers.
Thank you for sharing your exploration of this cemetery. Much appreciated Michael.
I offer my comments as a Scot who married into a Sicilian family almost 60 years ago and who lived in an Italian village for many years. My late husband was a master stonemason and worked with marble. He refurbished my own mother’s grave after our marriage. He was buried in an Italian cemetery elsewhere in Australia in recent years but it is one which to my eyes looks more traditionally old fashioned to the one you explored here in the beautiful Australian northern sunshine.
In many Italian places there is not always the space for single graves or crypts and the dead are placed in tiers with a marble headstone which normally shows the deceased person’s photo. The reason for the photos is that there is an Italian naming system (as we Scots also had) where children are named for grandparents. My oldest children for example are named so, but each has 7 cousins named identically for that mutual grandparent. The photo on a grave identifies which identically named person is in which grave. Only modern Italians have a non-family first name, or more than a first and a family name. Or my children who have a Scottish family clan connected middle name to compensate for not being able to follow my traditions.
As Roman Catholicism is the majority faith people are normally buried and not cremated. In those windowed crypts the graves would be under the floor. Older style crypts would not have windows like these and would have room for more (6-9) family members as they would have two or three tiers inside. Some of the Italian inscriptions showed how loved the deceased had been. The crypts are not a way to display wealth as one comment asked but to show how respected by their family the person/people had been.
I was interested to see that the Capodimonte flowers were the roses for love, pansies for thoughts and the purple iris which traditionally represents respect, and religiously also represents Mary, mother of Jesus. Iris means ‘sword’ so some religious paintings show Mary’s heart pierced at Christ’s death, so they also represent resurrection. The statues would come from a store like Pellegrini’s in Sydney and I guess that you’ll need to buy your own unfortunately.
Thanks again for your video Michael. Good that you could enjoy the sun.
Thanks so much for sharing this. Not only was it an interesting read, it answered a lot of my questions. Take care :)
That is the most beautiful cemetery I've ever saw.
I'm guessing in the mausoleums they are buried underneath them.
The tombs are "stunning". I very much agree with you.
This is in my local area. Many of my rellies are in that cemetery, but not of Italian descent, so just in usual type graves. Lovely suprise to see this being posted tho! Glad you found it stunning lol. 👍👍🐨🐨🐨🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍🐨🐨🦘🦘🦘🦘🇦🇺🇦🇺
So much to try and see I couldn't get to all of them 😔
That was just totally amazing. You will find that most gravestones in cemetery's will have a picture of the person if Italian.
This is very common for Sicilian families. Many Qld cemetery’s have huge Sicilian sections. My grandparents are in a Cappella (crypt) and are surrounded in death by the Cappellas of families that surrounded them in life.
Hi Michael…hope you’re doing well. My parents are buried in a Catholic cemetery with many Italian families (my Mom was Italian, my Grandparents came from Italy). Our family does not have a crypt but there are many very extravagant ones in the cemetery. I don’t know if this happens in other cultures but in ours, the entire family purchased their area and planned where everyone would go. The porcelain flowers you see everywhere are reminiscent of Capodimonte works. Thanks for another wonderful video! Oh and yes, that was St. Francis!
Thank you.very beautiful ❤️ good to see you👍🙋🕊️🧚
Incredible place! What a terrific find. Thanks for taking us on a tour of this stunning cemetery! 😉
How absolutely gorgeous. Just wow. And yes you are stunning alwayz. Hope you are well. Be safe. ✌💛 Hugz
those flowers under glass domes are called immortals such a beautiful cemetery I guess you cant give a suburb my guess close to Cairns I,m a Qlder to
Best not post location not everyone is respectful.
@@mkuebler5 ok understood
Thank you for letting us know that they are called immortals :)
Beautiful, when I worked in the cemetery back 84, they were stunning.....our family grave in Bundy has a stunning Italian grave 2 doors down, just beautiful.
I noticed with the double one that has the 1970s block wall Barbero and G? the 2 men "accidently killed" died a day apart
No problem for two couples of different names buried in the divided crypt. The families would probably have been related. Either cousins, or the wife of one of the men killed was sister to the other man killed.
So beautiful..
Never have seen a cemetery like this ever! Thank you Michael! You are right “ stunning” is the right word.
I admire the way these are done. Sensible to have ceramic flowers and tile. What a great tradition.
I am happy to see you again.
When the door pushed open, that was startling. I imagine the ones not kept up don't have relatives in the area anymore.
Startled me as well.
I love this cemetery. I have taken so many beautiful photos. So gorgeous.
Wow what a cemetery
These are just guesses because I am neither Italian or catholic...
I do believe that type of porcelain is called Capodimonte and it is a very expensive Italian product.
I also think the mausoleum you saw from a distance, Michael that you thought would be really interesting and turned out to be practically empty, was one that had been destroyed by mold and other weather related elements and is in the first stages of restoration.
I'm not a religious person either, but I remember as a kid popping into a catholic church nearby all the time to look at the statues and artwork like stained glass and architecture because it really is stunning work they do for them.
I'm also wondering where all these people in the mausoleums are "planted" ROTFL
Thank you for taking us along. :- )
I have 10-15 of the Capodimonte flowers my mom collected. They are beautiful but heavy as heck.
Joan, the graves are under the floors.
Hope ya health getting better mate Great video Michael Thankyou mate
so whats the thinking behind those ultra grand.. .alters ? IE: if we spend enough money on these tombs mom + pops HAVE to go to heaven ? Or just another way to show off their wealth. They say you can't take it with but these people sure came close. Where are the bodies ?
the bodies are usually placed in a vault in the floor..some larger ones have them stacked in the walls.
@@vickieoz the floor of that one crypt is breaking up- maybe somebody wasn't ready to go

I have not ever seen a cemetery like this one. So many grand and elaborate tributes to the dead relatives. I cannot imagine the cost of any one of those. Even a simple funeral is not cheap here as I found out when my husband passed away earlier this month.
Sorry for your loss 🙏
@@pamelaneibuhr6959 Thank you.
Wow I’ve never seen anything like this ! Thanks So much for sharing !
I LOVE the different tiles they used. I would be looking at that. Is someone buried in the buildings or are they buried in the graves and the building is a place to worship? Fascinating cemetery.
Hi and thank you! What a treasure, I have never seen a cemetery such as this. Are the persons interred in the ground in front or below the shrine condos or are they entombed inside the buildings? From what I could gather the persons appeared buried in the ground and the markers for each were above the altar indoors. Your hard work and contribution is appreciated. Scott
Hi Michael, I totally agree, it was truly stunning with so many beautiful statues and those crosses with the ceramic flowers on were simply gorgeous.
Thank you for sharing, much love. xx 💖
A very interesting and beautiful tour of that graveyard, loved the decorations and statues, it is a miracle they are in one piece these days, great walk around and hope you are doing ok.
Thankyou for this timeless beautiful and yes absolutely stunning never seen in my life cemetery
Wow it is stunning. Just beautiful. Thanks for sharing with us.
Where do they put the bodies in these crypts?
Thanks @mkuebler5. I enjoyed this amazing cemetery visit so much. Beautiful, stunning....an amazing way to be remembered! (St. Francis is the Patron saint of animals.)☮️🕊⛪️
Looking at the names (both first and family names) and birthplaces the majority of the Italian graves seem to be for Sicilian families. The statue looks more like the St Anthony who was a patron saint there for children. He looks to be carrying a child.
Absolutely stunning!!
Amen
Simply lovely..
The buildings hold their ashes?
Some might but I think most have been planted.

Beautiful
Beautiful video. You did a great job, you could see into the crypts clearly. Stunning tiles and crypts.. Love the blue sky surrounding this Facinating cemetary. Stay healthy and safe in these covid times....
Wow 😊✌️
Watching again !
Hope you’re well 😘
Worried 😧
It has been a while since I have heard from you. Are you doing okay?
This is the most amazing cemetery I’ve ever seen! The tiles, the flowers, the art! Like an art museum! Thank you! Now to help you a bit with the statuary: the statue of Jesus, with His red Heart is called The Sacred Heart of Jesus. The statue of Mary with her hands extended downwards is Our Lady of Grace, the statue of Mary wearing a blue sash is Our Lady of Lourdes (France). The statue of Mary holding the Christ Child, where she is crowned and has some strings (actually a scapular) is Our Lady of Mt. Caramel, the big angel standing with the little girl is a depiction of a Guardian Angel, the young man holding the Christ Child is Saint Anthony of Padua (an Italian favorite), the statue of an older man holding the Christ Child if Saint Joseph, Saint Francis of Assisi is usually shown with birds and animals. I hope you enjoyed this Catholic Art lesson 😉. Folks must’ve been rich. I’m having a difficult time saving up for my box and hole in the ground! 🤣
Beautiful .. 🥰..
Their graves are extravagant in Perth WA too.
It is absolutely beautiful!!!!
