First family adventure in our unfinished van | A road trip to Glencoe Scotland

- We are finally travelling after lockdown in our self converted camper van called Safari, and exploring beautiful Scotland, hiking in Glencoe and rambling up past Loch Lomond as we make our way up to the Outer Hebrides.
This is Crusoe's first adventure and our first trip as a family of three. There are lessons to be learnt, a few trials and tribulations, but for the most part travelling with our little man as he turns a whole nine weeks old has been nothing short of amazing and a real privilege.
The van is unfinished, but we've got plans for the build to continue while we are on the road. Next week's episode we hope will be van build Episode 6 which will be in the Outer Hebrides of all places!
Our new van is called Safari. Koti, our old, and very loved first self converted van, meant 'Home', and Safari means 'Journey', which feels very appropriate as we embark on this new chapter as a travelling family.
So, let's let the Safari begin!
We are the Newbys, John, Tara, and our two little boys Crusoe and Sawyer. We’re a family who are pursuing an alternative lifestyle, and after two years of full time travel we’ve taken root on an abandoned farm in Northern Portugal which we’re renovating into our dream off-grid homestead. We release new videos every Sunday sharing our story, and we’d love for you to be a part of it with us. Please remember to SUBSCRIBE if you haven’t already, it’s free and super easy to do and it helps us hugely.
Thank you for being here. We hope that we can inspire you to Be Brave, Think Big and to Explore.

I loved Loch Lomand and the castle where there's a statue of a little boy and his beloved Dog who drowned there. Such a truly beautiful place Scotland is ❤
And if Crusoe loses his way he'll have your videos and blogs and letters and all your journals to help him find his way back. What a wonderful couple you are!
Ahh thank you Merry, that’s such a lovely thought. ❤️😊💙🙏🏼
Good videos your both doing. Your should get a medal for jumping in that pool big man
Hi Jim! Thanks friend, that was a chilly old stretch of water for sure! We are currently in Portugal, and next Sundays video will see us both swimming in some more mountain rivers, we love it! Thanks for tuning in, great to have you along for the journey! 🙏👍😊🏴
I did that as a child what fun watching you enjoy Scotland. That water was cold I guarantee. Keep safe
Thanks Audrey! We loved that trip!! Great to hear from you, thanks for watching friend. 🙏❤️🏴
I don’t know you guys but It’s like watching old friends enjoying themselves. I love you all. Take care on your journeys xx
Thanks so much Effy ❤️😊
What beautiful countryside my grandfather was Scottish. He worked his passage to NZ looking after horses on a ship that was taking them to the Boar war in Africa in 1900. A year later his parents followed, but his father died within sight of NZ of TB. Sadly my grandfather died, leaving my Granny, who had 6 children, my Dad was only 4 at the time. I’ve always wanted to visit Scotland, thank you for showing it.
Wow Loris, what an incredible family history. Mine (Tara) is not too dissimilar as my family left the Uk for Africa in the early 1900’s and made their way across the continent by ox drawn cart! Thank you so much for being a part of our own journey, it means a lot to us. All the best!
Thought I would take a look at Scotland for a change! It’s so beautiful. I think your subscribers are rising so that’s great too. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Sylvia, yes, we are growing as a channel which is excellent news, very exciting!! Thanks for watching and for your comments. Scotland is beautiful!
I have been to Glencoe many times. Love it no matter what season it is...which is a good thing because there isn't much difference!!! Great video.
John spent almost every summer of his childhood driving with his family through Glencoe. Fond memories for sure, and agreement with you, the season is certainly one of the colder windier ones! Thanks for travelling with us Toastandjam, it is great to know you’re out there. :)
Love Glen Coe and the Glen Etive road.
Hi David, an amazing road for sure! Thanks for watching!!! 🙏🏴
I love Glencoe. I camp there. It was great to see you all enjoy it as a family. 😊
Hello friends, seeing all the expressions of tiny Crusoe is so cute. What an adorable baby he was and a pretty good traveler too, must be in the genes. I remember those baby poop explosions, LOL My daughter had one when she was Crusoe's size at a Chinese restaurant, I'm sure the other diners did not appreciate that, hee hee.
I discovered you two (now three) while searching for smaller van builds and was instantly hooked. I'm looking to convert what would be considered a mini-van with a much smaller capacity than most of the builds out there, and have had difficulty finding examples of quality builds for smaller vehicles; seeing Koti was so inspiring. Your design layout and utilization was creative and thoughtful, thank you so much for sharing her with us; I'll be modeling my rig after her. :) I rarely subscribe to channels (which I did after the first video), and despise watching adverts, but happily do it to support you two. You make wonderful content, which I have binged, and I love how you love each other. Keep up the good work and can't wait to have all three of you in the States. Stay safe and adventure on.
Hi Lucy, great to hear from you!! Thanks very much for joining us. Sounds like you have a cool van build project on going. Please do feel free to ask us any questions if you need to, any time. Koti was a great van and we loved every minute exploring in her, our new van needed to be bigger because of Crusoe, and we are really enjoying the adventure in It; but we do miss Koti, an excellent van. Please do let us know how you get on with your build, will you be documenting it? Thanks again for joining the adventure. :) 🙏👍🔨
@@TheNewbys Thank you so much, that’s super generous. I will definitely be taking you up on that offer, I need all the help I can get. 🤗 First question in the series of many ... you had mentioned if you were to do it again, you would have used flexi solar panels instead of the hard panels; were the panels on Safari, Koti’s repurposed panels or did you discover something about the hard panels for why you stuck with them? (I guess besides the fact you can repurpose them. Ha.)
Yes, I will be documenting the process and posting on YT and IG. My initial project will be a small SUV camper conversion in order to get across country comfortably, then it will be the van build. Dun-dun-DUHN! ☺️
Hi Lucy, COOOL!!! We will keep an eye out for your videos, good luck! Solar panels, interesting beasts. Flexi panels seemed like a good plan, but after further research It looks like they can crack over time, so we went with the solid panels, 240 watt so far with an option to add more. It’s a simple system and easy to install, just make sure you wire the battery first then into the controller, after that solar in to the controller and on. If you get the battery bit the wrong way around you can damage the battery or controller. :)
@@TheNewbys Thank you for this, so helpful! I’ve been going back and forth and you just made it a heck of a lot easier to choose, rigid panels it is! No need to keep a lookout because I will be pestering you all along the way. :) Look at what you started. Be well, Newbys.
Thanks Lucie! So great to know you. We hope you will keep us up to date. Looking forward to talking with you again soon. Very exciting!!
You are the most amazingly beautiful couple …. And now your son, I love your adventures xx
Hi Susan, you are wonderful, what a lovely thing to say. We are thrilled to have you along with us. Thank you! On with the adventures. 😎😊👍
I love your footage, this way I also can see the wonders of the world
Hi Maria, thank you for leaving us such a nice comment. We are delighted to have you along for the journey. It’s really great to have you travelling with us. Our favourites so far are Greece, Finland, Portugal, and very strangely Latvia!!!

Hi Colby, great to hear from you! Thanks for leaving us a message, really pleased we have taken you down memory lane! 🙏 thanks. :)

John!! Thanks friend for your message. Pleased you liked this video, Crusoe is super chilled on the trip which is making it super easy. We are heading across to Skye and on to Uist next. See you next week! Always Thanks, and grateful for your support. :)
love the warmth and structure of your videos. lovely landscapes, thank you.
Thank you so much rayray, we’re so grateful to have you here, means a lot to us. See you next week!
Absolutely brilliant. Nice to see you both up in my homeland. Can't believe you got in that water as it must have been freezing!!! Looking forward to the next adventure video 👍🏴
Hey In Transit! Good to hear from you. Your home country is amazing, we are loving it. Currently on Uist right now, spectacular beaches! We hope to be in Scotland for a few weeks, any recommendations?
@@TheNewbys I would recommend Iona and Mull if you have never been. NC500 route on the west coast offers amazing lochs, beaches and mountains. The bealach na ba road to Applecross. One of the best scenic roads in Scotland and there is a parkup not far from the top with amazing views and red deer. Loch Lomond - Balmaha has a lovely little harbour with lots of parking and possible parkups/camping in the area. Can walk up Conic Hill from the main carpark or follow the road along to walk up Ben Lomond. Glenfinnan viaduct and surrounding areas for camping and lochs. Loch Katrine is beautiful and offers great walks, views and tranquility. Plenty of parking in the area also. If you are heading to the top of Scotland you should visit Smoo Cave. Plenty of walks and sea views as well as camping. There is lots more... too many to mention.
Hi InTransit, we have just listed this comment and will be checking out your recommendations, thanks so very much! Off to more Scottish adventures!! Thanks!!!
Glad you overcame your apprehension Tara and enjoyed Glencoe. You are making great parents to a beautiful little boy. Superb footage and little singsong from John. Can’t wait for next week 😀😀
Thanks so much Jane, amazing to hear from you and yes, stepping out of your comfort zone is always when the magic happens and I’m so grateful to John for helping me do it when I need a little push. Thank you for being a part of our journey, it means a lot to us x
Great video, lovely couple. I'm doing the NC500 on a Harley in Sept, got some very useful info guys. THANK YOU.
Hi Scott, great to hear from you. Thanks for watching, we are super pleased you have found some of our videos interesting and helpful. Good luck with your own NC500 adventure, on a Harley!!! VERY COOL!! 🏍. Let us know how you get on! This week we are in Wales visiting some odd places that you might also be interested in. Keep an eye out on Sunday! Thanks for watching!! 👍🙏
Definitely will watch that as I'm only an hour from Wales. I'm going to hopefully make a video while on the NC500 but it will be a long way from your very professional feature. Mega editing, drone footage, quality etc. Stay safe.
Sounds great Scott. We will look out for your video. If this channel and making our videos has taught us one thing it’s that you don’t need to be good at something to start doing it, so long as it’s fun that’s all that matters. Some of our first videos are pretty basic, but we love them anyway, and of course we have loads to learn, we are just getting started. Have a great trip, we will look out for your video. :)
What a lovely episode. Just the most gorgeous, craggy, moody landscapes. Very different to the ones I’m used to in southern Australia. Crazy-brave John swimming in freezing water and a non-plussed Crusoe the highlights.
Hi Flaneur! Thanks for leaving us a message, what an adventure Glencoe has been, landscapes are spectacular. John did get a bit carried away with the water, next time Crusoe might join him! Thanks 🙏 🏊♂️🤩
xxxxx n loving these catch up back vids...Sawyer is the split of Crusoe just a pleasure to see...xxx
Wow Scotland looks amazing Thanks for a great video once again

Just found your channel, we came back from Scotland on Saturday, absolutely stunning.
Brilliant! Where did your adventures take you in Scotland? What was the highlight? We loved our trip so much and can't wait to get back.
@@TheNewbys we used Tummel valley as a base and from there we did various motorbike trips, through the cairn gorms, up to Eilann Donan castle, some incredible motorbiking roads and views and we only scratched the surface. One place we loved was called " Killin ", beautiful little village. Can l be nosy on behalf of my wife and ask where you both originate from ?
Hi TheMilkybarkid69 (great name by the way!) Tara is from Zimbabwe originally and John is from Oxford, he’s spent a lot of time out of the UK though so talks a bit funny 😂😂. Thanks for the tips of where to visit in Scotland, always very much appreciated friend. We will be sure to check them out. Thanks!! 🙏🏴👍

Dragoste Romania!

What a joy to watch, your first trip with Crusoe and beautiful Glencoe seen through your eyes. I was there first, John! A whole lot of years ago. Our version of Safari was a tiny Morris Mascot and an even smaller tent - we felt very smart and adventurous. Looking forward to en episode edited by Crusoe
Hi Ingegerd, thanks for sharing your story there, cool to imagine that not much has changed since you were there, that likely the rivers flow the same channels and the mountains remain the same as you explored them. A destination for generations of explorers. Wonderful!!! Crusoe shall be editing soon we are sure!! 😊👍😎

Love this vlog, that water looked so cold 🥶 You guys are living your best life. We are off to the outer Hebrides in September and are now thinking of stopping here first.
We are really enjoying your videos, we found you when we were researching the outer Hebrides and then started your videos from the beginning. We always watch your new video on a Sunday and then go back to where we are up to. Thanks for sharing your amazing adventures Sarah and Lee 😊🚐
Hey Sarah and Lee! Really great to hear from you and thank you so much for your support. Yes, that water was VERY cold, but John insisted on getting into it because it was the very waterfall he and his family would swim in on their way to Northern Scotland as children. Wonderful to hear that you're heading up there soon, the Outer Hebrides are incredible. Where are you headed? Happy travels and thank you so much once again for being here!
