I was there. Somehow me and my friends got seated in the lawn chairs in front of the stage. There was a water shortage in NY at that time and when he sang everybody’s making love or else expecting rain we all cracked up, as you can here on the recording!
Fantastic piece of historical context. Thanks for sharing :) did you save a ticket or program from this concert? Did you attend any other Dylan concerts from this period?
I was there too. Couldn't believe some of the hecklers in the crowd complaining about his electrification ("he looks like Elvis Presley, for Chrissake!"). That day, I also remember there was a brief but violent storm on Long Island, knocking trees down (about 4:30 PM), including one that came down on our house, bounced off the roof, and onto my mom's car in the driveway! Anyway, I am SO grateful to finally have a recording of this historic concert.
Dear dennis, what was the shouting about at just like tom thumbs blues 2nd to last verse. i translated it on deepl into my language...text seems ok. so if you have a clue, thankyou. greetings from austria
I was at this concert - I thought the best song of the acoustic set was "To Ramona" and the best from the electric set was "Ballad of a Thin Man" though the opening song "Tombstone Blues" was almost a tie. I also saw Dylan's return to Forest Hills 51 years later just a few years ago - not nearly as good as the 65 show unfortunately. It's amazing that they didn't get it together to film the 65 show. So classic!
I saw him in like 2011 woodstock ny, I'm 29 now so maybe 20 or something then, but I specifically remember to Romona, which I was surprised he played, one of my favorite songs at the time, still love it , also desolation row(possibly all time favorite) he played a lot of good ones that night I think

Desolation Row being played live for the very first time! This is history. Wonder what they thought after having Dylan sing the same song for 11 minutes. Probable that they were born again. Great bootleg, by the way, keep them comingo, I love your account.
Live debut of “Desolation Row” which was recorder earlier in August but not yet released. Imagine hearing those weird words for the first time from Bob’s mouth (with acoustic guitar)? Thank you so much for posting these treasures!
Thanks - I was at this concert. If they had had brains enough to film this show it would be a total classic. Unfortunately, they didn't have the brains.
Well, that settles it. Ballad Of A Thin Man was already absolute MURDER from the very first night it was ever performed, onwards. Just one, long, seven-minute sneer. Gorgeous
Shame no video but extraordinary to hear Desolation Row. Audience reaction - immediate reaction to apparently offhand lyrics. Oh if only we could witness this now! They were certainly listening!
@@jerryleech8594 people listened like that at lots of venues, people are still listening to Dylan and his band like that, if you mean paying attention and being happy.
Terrific to hear From a Buick 6 live. He only performed it a couple of times, in California too I think and then dropped it. One of my favorites! And Tombstone Blues!
I remember the audience reaction more than the songs Dylan did. He was great that night, but I've seen him many times since and he always seems dour and indifferent to his audience. Then again, he must love it because he never stop touring.

I love the reactions to Desolation row. Humor seemed so much more innocent back them to get a laugh out of the silly lyrics. Can't help but wonder what that damn thumping sound is though :(
