Dr. Joseph Hobbs, Chair Emeritus of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, discusses the socioeconomic impacts of cancer diagnoses and treatment, including homelessness and food insecurity.
"Less affordable housing, frequent moves and homelessness are higher among cancer survivors, and can negatively affect their long-term care and outcome, investigators report. They looked at a national dataset and found nearly 17 percent of cancer survivors reported moderate or increased housing insecurity. Housing instability can in turn complicate their ability to optimally help manage their disease and navigate the healthcare system, investigators say. It also increases the risk of insecurity about other fundamentals like food. The investigators suggest that cancer specialists and primary care providers treating people with cancer, talk with them about food and housing insecurity, and help identify resources when needed. Patients with a lower socioeconomic status and some racial/ethnic minorities may be particularly vulnerable. I’m Dr. Joseph Hobbs.”
