If you think about a heavily bombed country, Laos doesn't often come to mind, but during the Vietnam War, the United States dropped about 270 million bombs over the Southeast Asian country, making it the most bombed country per capita in the world.
That is the equivalent of one plane load of bombs every 8 minutes, 24 hours a day, for 9 years.
The goal was to disrupt enemies' supply lines,
or if pilots could not complete their original mission, they also used Laos as a dumping ground to unload the bombs before returning to the base.
About 1/3 of the bombs didn't explode, still posing a threat to this day.
Roughly 50,000 people have been killed by these unexploded bombs since 1964.
However, since 1993, the U.S. has provided Laos with about 5 million USD per year for unexploded ordnance clearance, which sounds like a lot until you realize
that the U.S. spent about 16 million dollars a day for 9 years on bombing Laos.
