Being a Dutchman I only recently learned about the history of Burgundy. Now I can't stop thinking what my country would have looked like if Burgundy had survived to modern times. In the end, the Burgundian counts created a place where Dutch (and Flemish) culture could prosper, they were the first to unite the low countries and created a common identity. If only Charles the Bold was a little less bold and a little more cunning.
Why America matters. Well found wisdom good sir.
They were dukes, not counts. And even though the region was united I wouldn't say there was a common identity, nor would I be so sure about that Dutch/Flemish culture.
I find it weird that as someone from the Netherlands you would've preferred Burgundian rule.
If there's no succession crisis, there's never a Philip II, so no secession, no fall and blocking of the port of Antwerp (which ended the Flemish Golden Age), no Dutch Golden Age, no VOC, no nothing. Even the first university in present day Netherlands was only founded during the 80 Years' War. And more than likely it's that common enemy that gave the Netherlands its common identity (although there are still many identities like above and below the Moerdijk, Friesland, and so on...)
Everything would've still been centered around present day Belgium: politics at the ducal (later imperial) palace in Brussels (where later Charles V would abdicate in favor of Phillip II), trade and arts in Flanders (mostly Bruges & Ghent), the university in Leuven, jurisdiction and upbringing of rulers in Mechelen. Philip the Good spent the latter part of his life in Bruges, founded the Order of the Golden Fleece, and died there, Mary was born in Brussels, got married in Ghent, died in Wijnendale, Philip the Handsome was born in Bruges and got married in Lier.
And Burgundian culture was quite the antipode of Dutch culture today lol.
Still even if Charles had been more cunning, as you say, that doesn't mean he would've produced any more heirs.
Wij Willen Willem Weg Will Willem Wijzer Worden WIllen Wij WIllem Weer
The dutch. Pah!
Let's just hope if a modern day Burgundy comes to life, it wouldn't be one like in TNO.
The Low Countries were also a united entity before and after Mary of Burgundy married Maximilian I. They were part of the Holy Roman Empire, but the Dutch inhabitants of each region of the Low Countries fixated on the identity of their own respective region and resented attempts by the Holy Roman Emperor to "impose" standards on them that did in fact unite them.
Merci beaucoup pour cet enregistré ancien ( et plutôt bien nettoyé ) . Je collectionne ce type d'enregistrements de musique ancienne et je ne connaissais pas celui-là . 🤗 💚 ☺
I really wish they would reissue this in a digital format, or even on CD. It is superb.

Still have all the vinyl, thanks for uploading! Super medieval music!👌💪🙏💯
Outstanding. Superb. Elegant. Harmonious.
Can't thank you enough for posting this. Have loved this album for decades; sadly, it (like many other Musica Reservata's LPs) seems never to have made it to CD. These are great performances of beautiful pieces. It's especially interesting to hear Jantina Noorman sing Dufay's long lines in a softer-grained, more lyrical style, compared with the wonderfully earthy hollering she can produce in other music when she chooses.
Can't agree more! PLEASE someone put all MR on CDs. Floreat Jantina!
Thank you so much. This album was my first encounter with this kind of music, maybe 30 years ago, and it was the start of a love that lasts till the present day. I had this album on tape, but couldn't play it anymore because my cassette deck broke down. It is great to have it at my disposal again! The performance of Guillaume Dufay's Vergene Bella on this record is the best I've ever heard.
Sublime j,ose espérer que mon cher Maximilian a entendu cette merveilleuse musique c,est fascinant
Vive Bourgogne !
oh oui VIVE LA BOURGOGNE et la Duchesse Marie
Medieval music has such an enchanting timeless quality to it.
It's not medieval but renaissance music.
@@NA-zq3fz When does the medieval era end?? The so called reinassaince era is a farse.
@@NA-zq3fzthe two overlap.
Music as both a lasting inspiration and a celebration. The late Richard Vaughan, wonderful medieval Professor of History at Hull really was the spitting image of his world-renowned research and subject - Philip The Good. Now 50 years of thanks to cantina Noorman, Michael Morrow, John Beckett, David Munrow and the entire Consort, just sublime. Thank You....
I believe you meant 'spit and image'.
Perfect for studying Modern History. Thanks you very much.
Welcome to the Renaissance.

Lang leve Bourgondië,- en weg de perfide Armagnacs!
How beautiful; especially via good headphones and with a book!

Music from a time when music itself could represent the power of a monarch or the state.

Immortalize the Battle of Nancy: the continent's "I will die a King or triumph one on the field of battle." Tactical feet only actually feel thrown by the Burgundian king. End of the feudal era.
Hoomeyow!!
Happy AOE2 DE Expansion!
Sadly enough, almost everyone who thinks of the word ‘Burgundy’ gets TNO flashbacks.
Imagine a burgundian state in modern day... that will be interesting
