As a Brazilian, as a horror fan, as a Brazilian horror filmmaker and as someone who made a minor (but gratifying) contribution to this boxset, I am beyond excited about this release. José Mojica Marins' films have long faced neglect in our country, with the possibilities of a good, proper restoration growing slimmer with each passing year. Thank goodness Arrow decided to step in and, with the aid of some hardcore Brazilian cinema individuals such as Paulo Sacramento, Carlos Primati and Dennison Ramalho, bring these extremely important films out into the open for a wider audience. Coffin Joe has finally achieved his immortality now that his films have been restored and properly safeguarded for future generations.
Hope you enjoy the demented works of one my country's most transgressively insane artists. Coffin Joe lives!
Legal irmao!👍
Your contribution, however minor, helped to make this set as spectacular as it is. Arrow has really rolled out the red carpet for Coffin Joe's work here. I'm highly looking forward to checking his movies out.
Definitely start with At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul. The most badass black and white horror film you'll ever see. 👍
Sounds awesome! Looking forward to seeing it.
You could start with the trilogy to get kinda of familiar with his work.
At Midnight I'll Take your Soul (1964), This Night I'll Possess your Corpse (1967) and then in 2008 Embodiment of Evil.
I live in São Paulo/Brazil and met him a couple of times, even drank some caipirinha with him. R.I.P.
Legal!😊
@@HECTORMONTALVO-le9cn Rapaz como o homi gostava da caipirinha. Brasileiro nato, tava no final mas, ainda sim, sempre gente da gente 🙌

The guy is a legend José Mojica Marins is such a unique person who was a movie lover at a young age . But these films are such a fun crazy ride . The best film to start with is a midnight I’ll take your soul . That’s where the legend begins well Piz enjoy you will not be disappointed.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll begin my Coffin Joe journey with that one.
My favorite is Tonight I Will Possess Your Corpse. That movie combines black and white and colored scenes and the concept inspired the production design of Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride.
I did manage to buy the coffin Joe movies on dvd in a collection also ( i feel like one of the lucky ones 😊) i love all these movies, especially the second movie.
I'm surprised to see so many who haven't seen any of Marins' movies. Even before DVD, there was VHS of some of them available from Something Weird Video in the U.S.. People who haven't seen any are picking up the Arrow Video set before me, and so now I feel sorry for myself. I'm guessing you'll at least have an appreciation on some level for some of these movies, if you don't love them. I particularly liked the second featuring Coffin Joe, This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse, but every one I've seen has been worth the watch.
Hi Pizowell. You're in for some fun. I picked up an Anchor Bay Coffin Joe boxset import (8 films)many years ago while visiting London and was blown away by his films.
If you have a chance, please review "At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul". Curious of your opinion.
About 16 years ago i got drunk and watching IFC. At midnight ill take your soul was on. Ive became obsessed with coffin joe films since. I should get this set Tuesday in the mail
Never heard of Coffin Joe till Arrow did this release. Glad to see you picked it up. I will waite for your review to see if I should get this👍🏽
Nice looking release. I’ve tried on multiple occasions to get into these movies, but I just never could.
I've never seen Coffin Joe movies either. I've read about it in Rue Morgue back in like 2009ish. I may have to check this out!
A heads up for anyone who buys this set; the film Awakening Of The Beast, reportedly has an issue with the subtitles disappearing after about thirty minutes, never to return.
Oh no.....thanks for the heads-up.
Thanks of the heads-up.
I'm unfamiliar with Coffin Joe but I'm guessing, with those nails, he's not doing a lot of typing! Beautiful set and sounds very interesting.
Haven’t seen them as a teen(25 now) so I’m excited to see them again including the new films. The first two was awesome
I've been anxiously awaiting this set since it was first announced despite never previously knowing of him or his films. Pre ordered my set, hopefully here by the end of the week.
Word has it that Joe Bob Briggs is the one who came up with the actual moniker of Coffin Joe. Too bad that there are no included commentaries with Joe Bob himself as his dialogue is both informative and very funny. Check out his commentary on Samurai Cop 😂.
Just had horrors of the black museum new on cult films 🎥 uk 🇬🇧 with slip art cards 😊😊😊
Recently received my BR copy of the film on the VCI label.
1959 old school horror fun, and Michael Gough, again, ranking high as a sly, nefarious, bad guy.
Coffin Joe is rad - first discovered the films on the old Fantoma DVDs back when I worked at a video store. It’s a great looking set, but there’s an error that breaks Awakening of the Beast. The English subtitles for the feature drop out around 33 minutes and never come back. The subtitles for the commentary track work just fine, but not for the feature. I’ve watched all but the last three films in the set and haven’t found out any further errors.
Butcher Billy's art is wonderful. Go Brazil!
I know diddles squat about Coffin Joe, but.its a must buy. God knows what these films are like though.
Up until Arrow announced this set, I had no idea who Coffin Joe was. I still don’t so I’m not sure if I should grab this but at the same time, I don’t see us ever getting a set like this again.
This is a good boxset to own for any horror fan.
Apparently the 4th film has subtitled issues so there might be a replacement disc coming. Heard about it in the Facebook movie groups.
I suggest everyone to watch first "At Midnight..." It is his best movie and the birth of Coffin Joe character. Too bad the box does not contain "Black Exorcism of Coffin Joe", a good movie he made during the Exorcist craze .
Great review as always, just ordered it.
I can't believe people have never seen these movies before. They've been on fantoma dvds for over 20 years at this point. 😆
This night I'll possess your corpse and the strange world of coffin joe are absolute masterpieces of cinema horror, at midnight I'll take your soul is great, love hallucinations of a deranged for its complete surreal wackiness. it's only strange they left out black exorcism from this collection. the man was a great filmmaker
Great review. I never heard of Coffin Joe and this seems to me that this is a great box. As always, Arrow, did a, great job. I will order this box in these days.
How ironic, last night as i was trying to get to bed and suffering from insomnia I thought to my self "I need to add those Coffin Joe movies to my future watch lists. I haven't seen them in a while."
I've seen all 3 of the Coffin Joe movies.
My favorite movie of the Coffin Joe franchise is This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse. Which is the sequel to the first movie. I won't spoil it, but it has a really good depiction of a certain place. The best scene in any of the Coffin Joe movies. Embodiment of evil was a let down, but not terrible. Just the weakest compared to the first two movies. So when it comes to the trilogy, it's the first two movies for me,lol. Part 3, I have no interest in rewatching.
I’m not gonna lie, I have never seen any of those movies
someone said that one of the movies the subtitles go missing for about 30 mins?
Yes, it happens on Awakening of the Beast. Tested it on 3 dedicated BD or UHD players and my PlayStation, all with the same result.
Yes I tested it this morning as well and the subs are not there after a while, will be a few months wait for a new discs I would imagine @@joncohorn1020
Maybe unfortunate but it can inspire some good fun for the viewers to make up their own dialogue during the parts lacking subtitles. I'm always up for that.
I try and keep my blind buys to an absolute minimum now. Especially with expensive sets. But as a horror fan who has been dying to see Coffin Joe films, I'm VERY tempted to blind buy.
The question is: Are any of the films worth it?
the first 2 are good, the rest not so much
👏👏👏
