Nice! Going to attempt myself. A small “tip” 😏 is to put epoxy in small sandwich bag, then clip off corner and then apply the epoxy by squeezing the bag. Like bakers do for frosting. I put epoxy not mixed even and knead it in the bag to mix.
Very good video. Thanks for the video. I really enjoy your videos. Do you know how I can save these videos and refer back to them when I am attempting to accomplish one of your projects?
Alan, great techniques for making pens .............what are you using on the side of the battery charger to adjust the heat ? Is it just a rheostat knob to control the power / heat that you've wired into the circuit separately ? Liked and subbed, great stuff !
After wood turning for a few years, I have been wondering what's next? Hollow forms, piercing, dying, segmented bowls, patination, pyrography? Now I know. Thanks for taking the leap, starting with creating a powerful supply.
What is the difference between high temperature wire and resistance wire? Resistance wire shows temperature rating to 2100f. Is this good for making tips?
Thank you very much Sir. Very informative and useful. The tips can be bought at aliexpress. For 100 raw tips only cost $6 and free shipping. The power supply (SMPS Switch Mode Power Supply) can also be bought there for cheap.
Some excellent and very useful "tips" Alan, I am looking forward to getting the time to use my pyrography station, that my wife bought me as an early Christmas present, you have given me many ideas. Thank you. Take care Mike
As I said in the video, I'm not an electronic tech. However, the issue is more than volts. You also need to compare amps (I believe). I doubt a train draws very much power. Alan
It would be best to wrap the internal steel rods each individually in *Kapton tape* (by name, not just any transparent orange-yellow tape) as it's specifically designed for high power insulation.
+Mike Peace I did the drawings in Microsoft Powerpoint. It's not great for technical drawing but since I have it, it is adequate. :) Happy New Year. Alan
You may find that the 1/4" plug gets rather hot after a while in use. This plug was not meant for high current. A set of banana plugs and jacks works much better and is much cooler.
Your video was so enjoyable to see. Your voice transmits tranquility and your advices are very useful
Thank you so much!

I haven't thought about pyrography until I recently found out my grandfather was into doing it. I'll have to send a link to your videos on it to him.
+Make Crazydays He probably has a few tricks of his own.
Alan
Thank you
Like pyrography
You are welcome
Alan
WELL DONE

Alan
Very Cool the video I liked a lot.
Could you tell me how to make this connection on cable p10?
Sorry, I've not a clue on cable P10.
Alan
Does the PVC plastic handle get hot to hold? Any changes or suggestions/ tips you would add since this was done over 5yrs ago? THANKS!!
They can get warm. when they do, take a break. :)
Alan
Good video and very timely for me. I've been wanting to make some of my own pens and wasn't sure how to go about it. Thanks!

Very good video. Thanks for the video. I really enjoy your videos. Do you know how I can save these videos and refer back to them when I am attempting to accomplish one of your projects?
+Tommy Schutz Perhaps, the best way is to create a playlist of your favorites.
Glad you like them.
Alan
is the pvc handle generating alot of heat? hows it holding up?
It can get a little warm. Then it is time to take a break and avoid repetitive stress. :)
Alan
Thanks your awesome can you leave a link on your power supply for Wood burning or just a little comment or something, thanks
Frankly, I don't understand the question. You can search my site for pyrography to find a pyrography pen and other projects.

Yes, exactly.
You should watch the companion video that explains the charger conversion.

I would google it. :)
Alan
alan , is there a reason molly recommended 20 gauge wire versus 16 or 18?
Not sure - but she knows her wire.
Alan
Thank you that was very helpful.
+littlewoodworker Hope it's useful to you.

Good information for those who just want to buy a more powerful version than off the shelf burners.
Thank you

+Mike Waldt Excellent - a new horizon for you.
Alan
which shape of wire would I need to make to sign my turnings
thanks
I use a commercial small ball tip. Others recommend a commercial skew shape.
The skew is sharper but takes more manipulation. Try both.
Alan
Would a 12v model train transforer work?
As I said in the video, I'm not an electronic tech.
However, the issue is more than volts. You also need to compare amps (I believe).
I doubt a train draws very much power.
Alan
Ok thanks
Excellent...!
Cheers...

You're welcome to upgrade the project in any what you see fit.
There are also commercial pyrography units available.
Alan
Nice illustration of the schematic. What application are you using for those drawings, Alan?
+Mike Peace I did the drawings in Microsoft Powerpoint. It's not great for technical drawing but since I have it, it is adequate. :)

+Randy Smith Thanks for the tip. Well worth considering.
Alan
How many AMPE?
Actually, I'm not sure. It's was advertised at 10/2/50 ams. but after the modification, I've not measured it.
Alan
Volts?
The transformer converts down to 12 volts. Plenty of power.
Alan
Milli Ampaire please.... and thinks sir.
You are welcome.
