- Here's the premiere of "Hollywood's Talking", Geoff Edwards' debut game show that aired on CBS from March 23rd, 1973 to June 22nd of that year. While the show, a Jack Barry Production, was a flop, it is probably more well-known for what it was replaced by. The show that aired in its place once it was cancelled? A little show you may have heard of, "Match Game '73".
"Hollywood's Talking" certainly isn't a bad game show, but it's not an outstanding one either. Geoff is still pretty good, and it's fascinating to watch his daytime debut. Two other shows debuted on the same day as this one, and both shows would fare better. Those shows? "The $10,000 Pyramid", and the hit CBS soap opera "The Young and the Restless". Развлечения
I recognize that music cue at 12:55 - that's "Bell Hop (a)" by John Shakespeare. This cue is now well known for being heard in certain scenes of SpongeBob SquarePants with Patchy the Pirate (played by Tom Kenny, who also voices the show's title character).
And for children of the 90s, "Mervin the Happy Cat" from Rocko's Modern Life
This game show came on 45 years ago today. Same day earlier in the day, The $10,000 Pyramid and The Young& the Restless premiered.
I remembered this Game Show back in 1973 on CBS Television, it came on after The New Price Is Right at 3:00 P.M. I enjoyed the show and got used to this show, that was until it was permanently replaced by Match Game.
I recognize that opening theme. TV-station WLVT PBS 39 used that theme for the Scholastic Scrimmage TV quiz bowl.
We have a list of celebrities on the opening to “Hollywood’s Talking”:
Mary Tyler Moore, Ross Martin, Pearl Bailey, Milton Berle, Sally Struthers, Rich Little, Lloyd Haynes, John Forsythe, Fess Parker, Judy Carne, JoAnne Worley, Doc Severinsen, columnist Joyce Haber, Dean Jones, Joan Rivers, Sebastian Cabot, Red Buttons, and David Janssen.
I didn't have high hopes for this but found it an enjoyable relic. Thank you!
I can remember the original version of this show when Lloyd Thakston hosted it. Lloyd before had a teenage rock n roll show before he got this show. Perhaps you might find it in the RUclips clips
I believe that show was called "Everybody's Talking "
Before Hollywood's talking it was everybody's talking on ABC.
23:02 - "Please stay tuned for _Secret Storm_ on most of these stations."
This should have been named "Child's Play Sr." as this was basically what it was.
Except it aired about a decade BEFORE "Child's Play".
This game show also debuted 50 years ago today on CBS besides the Young and the Restless, although this was a short-lived show running for 3 months in 1973
This is a rare, however, this is a super CBS game show!!
0:42 It’s unusual to see David Janssen laugh. I don’t think he ever smiled on The Fugitive! 🤣
A similar format would later be used in the 1982 game show, 'Child's Play' from Mark Goodson Productions.
Anyone know where copies of shows from the final week might be found? I was on this program Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday of the final week. The structure of the prizes was different by that time and I won the grand prize just by winning three successive regular games. Grand prize was a 1973 Datsun 240Z plus a wad of money. Anyway, I will happily pay whatever it might cost to get copies of those shows. GarryMooreFan do you know where I could find stuff from that last week? Thanks.
Hi!! I'm not sure who you could contact because sadly, besides this episode that I've posted, as far as I know every other episode of this series was destroyed back in the 70s. I think Sony currently holds the rights to all Jack Barry Productions, including this show, if any episodes exist, so Sony would be the company to get in contact with. Hoping for the best for you!!
That clock used in the BR is that the same clock in TPIR's CLOCK GAME?
Good guess, although the hand ran counterclockwise, as opposed to the "Clock Game" version with the hand running clockwise from 30 at the top to 0 at the bottom, marked off at 5-second intervals.
Appolos looks like Michael Winslow from Police Academy.
Was Appolos' brother mythilogical hero EhChilles? :P
Maybe he made some on-the-spot dicespins... XD
Fun clip to watch. Big Janssen fan (obviously)& Match Game fan.
How did this show pass as a pilot?
Geoff Edwards hesitated to ask Jesse.
This had at least 2 pilots. 1 hosted by Al Lohman (of Lohman & Barkley) the other by Betty White.
I had totally forgotten about this one. Definitely remember watching it with my Mom. Wasn't crazy about it, but it was a game show, so I watched it. :) Thanks for posting this!
17:15 That tune played in my head from the time this show until TODAY (11Sep'18)!
Gail was fast on the buzzer, and Marshall knew the second answer.
Appolos later appeared on HT's successor - Match Game.
I am checking out Wikipedia's Daytime Television schedules thru history and checking these old shows out. Only three/four channels in existence but it seemed better stuff was on esp. in 1973-1974. Is this from a trading circuit/UCLA/Employee/Contestant?
And then Geoff would host Play the Percentages for Barry and Enright later on. I'm thinking Geoff took the job for Dan.
The story was Jack and Geoff were like Gasoline and a Match.
This show would be replaced by Match Game ‘73, right? This show makes me think of Child’s Play, but with celebrities.
Instead of questions like "John likes to pour ______ on his cereal" they switched to questions like "John likes to stick his ______ in his cereal." It could be stick a spoon in his cereal but it might be something a little less likely to get past the censors but nobody would dare, you see. Thus a double-entendre.
Any more episodes??
The host looks a lot like Robert Culp. Sounds a lot friendlier though.
Veteran Geoff Edwards, best known for TREASURE HUNT, JACKPOT! among various game shows he's hosted.
@@MMB18abel Thanks!
This maybe the only show in existence.
Yeah, but at least that lasted one season. The kids were funny describing common things.
Marshall went to the Center podium.
Good thing Geoff Edwards hesitated to ask, to that 2nd contestant.
Match game when the sign changed the year from 1973-74, 74-75, 75-76, the cast had a little new year's party. I lived for that.
They had disagreed bitterly regarding the format of the show but the straw that broke the camel's back with Geoff was when Jack Barry came to his dressing room to tell him that his voice was annoying and asked Geoff to try to correct it. This is when Geoff told him to go ahead and release him after 13 weeks and to f- off in the meantime. This is documented in a book appropriately titled "Television Game Show Hosts."
Does anyone remember a man named Alan who dominated this show?
Mr.Edwards recalled Jack Barry saying, "You know, you have a really annoying voice. Can you do something about that?" Edwards responded with, "Jack, I have a contract for 13 weeks. At the end of 13 weeks, don't renew it and don't come into my dressing room again."
Would be nice if "Hollywood's Talking" needs to be revived with a new host since Geoff Edwards passed away in 2014.
since I live in New York if I brought this show back I would call it new york's talking
Or as CELEBRITIES SPEAK for either ABC or GSN.
Sort of like Child's play, too bad this didn't last. This looked like fun.
If memory served me correct - Geoff dared Jack Barry to fired him after 13 weeks since Jack hated Geoff as host was cancelled after 13 weeks. How about Jackpot whicg Geoff hosted.
JACKPOT!, a Bob Stewart production was a great game show and Geoff was reasonable for the format.
That Bonus Round Clock looks like The Clock Game from The Price Is Right!
That's because it is.
That doesn't sound like the _Hollywood's Talking_ theme I've heard before (which, by the way, is entitled "Virgo" and composed for Capitol Production Music by Robert Ascot). Could this theme here possibly be an alternate cut?
Match Game '73 was on the verge of getting cancelled after 13 weeks but the change over to double-entendre questions is what saved the day just in the nick of time.
Is this the only game show Geoff did for CBS?
The unsold "Cop Out" pilot was intended for CBS. Not to mention the pilot for "The New Treasure Hunt" was taped at CBS Television City, though that was intended for Syndication from the start.
Most of the other game shows he hosted were aired on NBC because he was well liked over there. He and Jack Barry did not get along and he said he wouldn't stick with the show if it made it past the pilot stage . It didn't. It was replaced with MATCH GAME.
Strippers?! I won't do that! I got some violinist, that I am thinking about. Keep it PG or PG -13.
I noticed how the film clip doors break away in the intro much like one of Jack Barry's other flops in The Reel Game.
German Shepherds as a hobby?
4:56 - There it is, folks-the first utterance of the phrase that helped put Geoff on the game show map.
CBS game show?
Is this Geoff's only NETWORK game show for CBS?
No he did jackpot for NBC.
BTW, Geoff Edwards did hosted "Hollywood's Talking" which was short-lived where he later hosted "Treasure Hunt", "Jackpot", and "Starcade". This game show is indeed rare, but I have not seen it before. "Hollywood's Talking" didn't last too long, but it was replaced by everyone's favorite, "Match Game".
And Chain Reaction, too. And here in California, The Big Spin as well.
That clock in the bonus round, looks like they borrowed it from TPIR's Clock Game.
Well, both shows were taped at Television City... :D
Dernit... I just mentioned that!
It went in the opposite direction...
As much as I liked Jack's hosting style, I had read that he was a real fucknut behind the scenes, so this doesn't surprise me. If Jack hated Geoff's voice so much, I wonder how he would've reacted if Louie Anderson had worked for him!
So there was this disclaimer at the 23:00 mark, during the close, that read some of the stars were given notes related to the subjects "in order to give contestants a fair chance to identify" them. On the one hand, this was not much different from "Hollywood Squares" or the yet-to-premiere "Celebrity Sweepstakes", but given Jack Barry's involvement-by-association with the quiz show scandals over a decade prior, would that disclaimer have been to address questions about a fix being in?
And a few weeks after the show was cancelled, Geoff was soon hosting another little show some may have heard about...The New Treasure Hunt.
It was also something of a knock-off of Bob Stewart's "Personality". Also, those contestant podiums look like they were borrowed from the Showcase set of the period on "The New Price is Right".
One problem with the show, and I'm sure you'll agree with me on that, is the lack of interaction between the celebrities and civilians due to all of the stars appearances being pre-recorded.
Dates should read March 26th to June 22nd.
Geoff had told me in email once that he and Jack Barry had a falling out over this show. Geoff told him the format would not work. Geoff was right, and ultimately, this was out, and Gene, Brett, Charles, and Richard were in!
that and the game could end too quickly very often if a good player keeps getting 2 correct answers on the $100-$150 clues.
Is it possible that the last show exists?
Very interesting but what a dull, basic format.
Rumor has it that CBS stopped erasing daytime game show episodes around this time.
Poorly conceived show. It was too easy to be out quickly, and end up with nothing. But seeing the styles of the people and the production methods of 1973 is interesting.
I see the basic idea, but the execution was just terrible.
Hi Garrymoorefan....
Sorry but this is not interesting at all and I usually like anything from the '70s.
That game show SUCKS!
That's why a better show replaced it, Match Game 73.
Is this the only game show Geoff did for CBS?
