In response to some of the comments I've read here: one reason poor people with food insecurity are often overweight is due mainly to the types of food that are available and that they can afford like high carb pasta, bread, sugary foods, fast food (dollar menu items). There is a lack of fruit, veggies, protein and healthy fats available. Research food deserts in urban areas for more info. Source: I'm a social worker ❤️

My main interest is food desserts. I live in NYC and shocked when I experienced a food dessert when visiting an area. I couldn't find a supermarket and could get about every take out within walking distance. Areas I worked at were places the projects were built. Now a rich expensive area, residents can't afford the prices and lost their last affordable supermarket. You think we have sidewalks until you remember some can't walk and rising mta transportation cost makes it impossible for them to go to a different area and hard to carry (loads of broken and non-existing elevators). It is everywhere.

The Great Depression people lived on sack of rice, dried lentils, and a head of cabbage. Meat was a very rare luxury. Ration cards and victory gardens.

I am learning how to garden for this reason. People move to a low cost area, maybe buy a house, have lost a job or jobs and supermarkets leave. If everyone started now and used what money they have and help each other out, maybe a container or anything could help each other out and help people who can't. This works better if you live in the suburbs sadly.

Try to help those in need whenever you can, even if it is a simple gesture of kindness.

I bless the volunteers who need help and/or help how they can. My experience as a volunteer at a soup kitchen was amazing. Then my job cut my hours. I still volunteered, only for a short bit. It was extremely hard to serve people when you yourself are starving, and can't get a tray of food at the kitchen too. The time I volunteered was also the only time I could go to a food bank or kitchen to get a meal, was a trip itself and not nearby that I paid transportation to and back. My hours were so few, but spread out that breakfast, lunch, and dinner kitchen lines were out of my reach the rest of the days. No food bank or kitchen is open 12am to 6am.

I say the same thing. I do know it might not be at all possible in a HOA community though. Outside those, I think about all the people who meet each other every month. What would happen if they could garden too. They would need donated soil, compost or anything to aid them in starting a container vegetable or an actual garden. I was planning on growing a certain vegetable. Someone said you only need two for cross pollenization. If you have three, you need to can as will go bad before you can finish them. What if each person helped the other growing herbs and vegetable. You could supplement yourself on top of the monthly food bank box.

A lot more people need to donate to the food banks everywhere. No one should have to worry about eating oatmeal to stop feeling so hungry, protein is so very important to obtain in the diet. Eggs, peanut butter, tuna, etc. All make great sandwiches. Think about what you would want to find and donate that. That is what I donate, good food is not much to ask for.

so its ten years later now 2019 and My guess is that these situations didn't get better, I mean in general- the overall food insecurity problem in the USA is still very high. Yes people do stupid things- they spend too much, drugs, alcohol, prostitution, and on and on gambling. Yes there are many situations where its not just one catastrophe that hit the family but sometimes Health, Loss of job, and some other loss. I'm glad that these pantries and food banks exist. but this cannot be the solution. Faith based charity is wonderful and I support all of it. but we need some structural changes in our society--- higher living wages- better education-- with less debt for student loans, maybe with new and improved solutions like workers arrangements or internships or employment programs. We need to do better than this. Its totally unacceptable to me that 1 in 4 are food insecure children. isn't that just outrageous. We need to change this.

4 dollars per gallon, still cheaper than Norways gas during a recession xD But Norway in general has higher wages,so its not entirely a fair comparison, but sigle income families here really struggle with the high prices since "everyone" has two relatively good incomes, and the prices reflect that.
