If anyone is wondering the reason for splitting, It is a very complex theory based upon molecular orbital theory which explains that elements having unpaired electrons are good conductors. Splitting of bands is actually the involvement of orbitals of different atoms of the elemental crystal. This is the simplest way in which I can explain the reason.

When an energy level splits in to many energy levels in a crystal then it is look like a band.
When these energy levels splits into low and high energy band then valence and conduction band are formed.
And the gap between these energy levels or valence band and conduction band is called forbidden energy gap
