Ubisoft has good developers, they just don't put all their efforts most of the times. They bring beautiful landscapes in their open world games, but they slack at character models, AI and physics. If they actually tried doing a game just like how Rockstar did for RDR 2, we would probably have one of the best videogames of all times. The last time they tried do something big was at AC origins, and it was really good.

The landscapes and world building is beautiful in outlaws, one thing Ubisoft never fail. It's the rest that bad, character models, story, gameplay, AI, physics, etc.

@thestateofdelaware8057 Red dead also took 8 years and 2000 people to develop. Hardly any games have the budget for that. By comparison Outlaws took 4 years and 600 people. That matters when you're comparing small details in animations and stuff that require man hours to work on. The fact that a game came out a long time ago doesn't really matter. Technology may mean better graphics, but for stuff like animation and AI reactovity, that still takes a lot of man hours to implement.

It's so cool that in RDR2 NPC's play poker completely independently of you, and other NPCs can join a game while you're already playing if there's a seat available at the table, but it always buggers me that when you join a game that is already going on it immediately resets, it's convenient but it breaks the immersion, they could've done it so that when you join a table you have the option to spectate the game that's going on, like other NPCs do when they join a game you're playing

9:16 it’s hard to compare this aspect because in red dead, every npc is always doing something, they’re at work, they’re getting a drink at the saloon, they’re sitting having a cigarette, having a meal, riding somewhere, and on top of that they even have daily routines
I remember watching a Rdr2 video where we spectate an npc and turns out it has an entire schedule 24/7 from resting, working, down time, till the end of the day where it spends the night drinking at the saloon.

The fact that Far Cry 3 (2012) and Watchdogs (2014) both had much more detailed poker animations is just one of many small signs of how much Ubisoft has degraded in terms of quality over the years. They used to take care with the little details like that, but now they can't even be bothered.
I think they're legit using AI to animate everything. The facial animations especially look like an AI's failed attempt at showing emotion, only it misunderstood what emotion is. Really, the only thing Ubisoft know how to do is make pretty environments, because that's the only thing they still do by hand. Literally all the environments in Assassin Creed games look stunning. Sadly, that's the only thing the newer entries have going for them.
i think the last good AAA game they made would probably be far cry 5 in 2018, since then it's just been slop city looking at their new games always makes me so sad, they have these poor level designers and modellers pouring 1000s of hours of labour into their worlds only for the game to be a 6/10 at best, making it forgettable

Comparing any company to Rockstar is an insult. Say what you want about Rockstar's business practices, but they do not mess around when it comes to game design. It's especially unfair for ubisoft, who usually have good ideas for videogames, but typically fall well short of expectations upon the games final release. Rockstar will very quickly remind us why they're the top dogs in the market when GTA 6 finally releases.

I wouldn't be surprised if outlaws had half as many resources as RDR2. Rdr2 was in development for 2 years longer than the amount of time since it came out. That's assuming it's reasonable to expect everyone to be as good as them.

As unrealistic as it is at least it's still fun. I tried playing outlaws and it just felt like...hollow. There was really nothing in the gameplay, story or graphics that made me feel like this was worth spending time on.

Based off what I’ve seen, the majority of their effort in Star Wars Outlaws mechanics went to plant damage, cooking NPC’s, and maybe a smidge of traversal. The rest they didn’t even try.
I think much of that was tech from Avatar Frontiers of Pandora. I believe most of it went into designing the planets and the city system as well as refining lighting system from Avatar

Assassin's Creed Odyssey also came out 6 years ago and while not as insane in the details as RDR2, it's still leagues better than Outlaws

The fact that Far Cry 3 (2012) and Watchdogs (2014) both had much more detailed poker animations is just one of many small signs of how much Ubisoft has degraded in terms of quality over the years. They used to take care with the little details like that, but now they can't even be bothered.
I think they're legit using AI to animate everything. The facial animations especially look like an AI's failed attempt at showing emotion, only it misunderstood what emotion is.
Really, the only thing Ubisoft know how to do is make pretty environments, because that's the only thing they still do by hand. Literally all the environments in Assassin Creed games look stunning. Sadly, that's the only thing the newer entries have going for them.

Comparing any company to Rockstar is an insult. Say what you want about Rockstar's business practices, but they do not mess around when it comes to game design. It's especially unfair for ubisoft, who usually have good ideas for videogames, but typically fall well short of expectations upon the games final release. Rockstar will very quickly remind us why they're the top dogs in the market when GTA 6 finally releases.

@@shiranuic9547 In the old EU books (which in SW franchise tend to be collections of explanations for everything the movies don't cover and plot holes) it is described as projectiles kinda riding laser incinerated gas bubbles. That's why the laser weapons are not beams of light, but travel like slow bullets. Something like that. So shockingly (and I'm sure this was unintetional) SW Outlaws is kinda lore accurate there.

Although its better overall, RDR2 got some things wrong. Like it's cool that pushing in to an NPC has weight and you can knock them over - but its pretty fucking ridiculous that they turn into a football you can just roll across the floor continously once they're down.

As unrealistic as it is at least it's still fun. I tried playing outlaws and it just felt like...hollow. There was really nothing in the gameplay, story or graphics that made me feel like this was worth spending time on.

I know Outlaws is probably not nearly as bad as Suicide Squad. I mentioned it because of the underwhelming visuals and features.

There are some elements from outlaws that look great. Like the plant physics and grass blowing. But RdR2 is better in most areas.

Based off what I’ve seen, the majority of their effort in Star Wars Outlaws mechanics went to plant damage, cooking NPC’s, and maybe a smidge of traversal. The rest they didn’t even try.
I think much of that was tech from Avatar Frontiers of Pandora. I believe most of it went into designing the planets and the city system as well as refining lighting system from Avatar
Npc cooking in SW:Outlaws are kinda smooth and impressive, must took like 20% of their budgets i think.
