Awesome you present a seriously clear and detailed review. I like how you truly observe differences as just that differences and not faults which is so important with creative tools ... Looking forward to scrolling through your other videos..
You could achieve a somewhat similar result (albeit in a more complicated fashion) using something like Blue Cat´s Mixer plugin (which separates the spectrum into multiple bands, allowing 2 plugin slots in each band) and inserting SPL Transient Designer, Flux BitterSweet, etc, in the frequency range of interest. It really works, and you can even go beyond and use other plugins as well (really cool). With a little care (a LOT of care; constant A/B´ing is a must), you get great control over specific problems or issues.
ive used both plugin versions for plugin alliance, ive definitely used the spl more and have been really satisfied with it! need to use the nvelope more i guess haha. would love to have some analog units in the future. thanks for the vid ronan, earned a sub!
Great vid! I know this ones is a lil old now but still holds up. The power switch on the back used to bug me but now i have so much gear that does that, or don't even have one, I just hook them up to the same rack rider power conditioner and turn them on in one go. Makes starting and ending sessions a lil quicker too... Essentially, that's doing the same thing as a 500 series power supply. I also like the idea of using transient designers to reduce room sound... kinda like reductive eq'ing... cheers
I made that a long time ago. These days I use the Nvelope more than the Transient designer. I got hooked on the flexibility of tweaking low end independently.
Hey Ronan, never heard that the hardware nvelope could be so creative and fun on drum sounds!! such a cool piece, would like to use a hardware unit rather than the plugin sometime :)
They should be pretty similar- the same guy designed them. The guy that designed transient designer left SPL to build the Alfa EQ . That is the way I understand it.
Hi Ronan, where in the signal chain would you advise to use the Transient Designer? (Trans-EQ-Comp) (EQ-Comp-Trans)? how about on busses vs individual tracks? Great vid!
What's the functional difference between boosting attack and reducing sustain? Or conversely the difference between reducing attack and boosting sustain? On your example on the mixed track it seemed like they accomplished about the same thing.
Great question, but the answer really is as the words describe. Reducing sustain removes part of the sound, and boosting attack adds to the sound. For example if you just boosted attack on a kick drum with long sustain, you would still have the long sustain on the kick drum, but with more aggressive transients.
So if you've already got a pre amp on that mic chanel, adding a cloudlifter would be pointless?? I guess unless perhaps it was a pre with more color? (In which case you could then sort of blend the colored pre w/ the transparent pre (cloudlifter)??)
Ronan, have you had any experience with the Elysia Xpressor? Im looking to pick one up and was curious if you had any experience/thoughts....? Thanks for the great videos, as usual! :)
Has anyone tried taking the mono signal from one side of the Elysia Nvelope in the transient shaping mode and fed it into the other side of the unit in EQ mode or vice versa to see if it is able to further enhance or diminish the full range of the signal after its already been affected by the other side?
While I significantly hear the differences in all the examples, at 22 minutes when you put on and off when the singer is playing, I don't hear so much difference. I don't know if this is YouTUBE's crapping stuff or if the effect is dramatically reduced in a mix, so that we perceive much less the effect.
One of the best review videos I have ever seen. Compelling. Makes me want to add this to my setup.

I use the Nvelope 95% of the time now, because I love being able to control low end without changing the highs much.
This 2 Products are amasing, so easy to use and the result is perfekt!

Fantastic video. Thank you for your experienced review. Would love to see a case study and how you might use the SPL and the Elysia on the same mix.

It would be fun to have the hardware, but I just have the plugin which is amazing. I use it on almost every project.
very useful and practical review, thank you Ronan
now that's a REVIEW i hope elysia gave you this for free cause you'd really deserve
+felix dacat Thanks. No I did not get a free one. Would have been cool, but no. I do have the new plugin which is pretty darn good to.
eheh i was just saying btw do the plug in sound the same as hardware? ty

@@RonanChrisMurphy cool, thanks for the details and context. :-)
Would this be good for a Jomox Mbase 11 to shape the kick? i'm also looking at compressor and Eq.
Hi Ronan, who made that Pultec clone you have there ? It looks like PCBGrinder's layout, but way cooler front panel and knobs.
You might be thinking of my A Designs EM-PEQ.

The one reason you may want to use one is for impedance matching. They can change the tone of some mics.
I have not tried the 500 series version. I was told they should sound the same, but I can not verify that myself.
FOR SPL it s like the plugin
Hi Ronan, nice video! Do you think the Nvelope hardware sounds better than the plugin or there's no big difference. Thanks in advance!
I have not used the hardware in years, and do not recall if I did a side by side comparison, but I am really happy with the software these days/
thank you!
@@RonanChrisMurphy
Have you tried this on bass guitar?
It would be killer to add more sub to the transient…punch without mud
Yes, but I find it works better on bass parts that do not have a lot of sustain.
Fine work ronan, have you tried the 500 series version. I wonder if there is any difference sonically
so, is the attack better on the spl & sustain better on the elysia for percussion?
Where the Nvelope wins is being able to tweak those independently based on frequency range.
Thanks for the awesome demonstration!
how does it differ from the plugin version?
makes me want to purchase this nice nvelope right now

I'm a year late, but Elysia has done that themselves on their own videos. Just watched them. It sounds really good.
Great Chris! When are you doing a seminar in Chicago?
hae chris.. have you tried the Moog ladder filter for sound shaping, exited to hear it .......do some demo about it as well, chears !
+Leo Have not tried it. I should try and check it out.
This is looking like a good first eq

If I had to use only one piece of gear... It's the nvelope!!!
great video love it
