The movie background seems to suggest an artillery shell, I haven't studied the lyrics, but listened to this track at least 100x - I don't think they say a mine do they?

I personally love longer metal songs like this. I'm big into instrumentation, and a stories/songs that carry deep meaning and contemplation. It's basically a modern day version of orchestral music.

When Metallica was in Moscow 1991 playing in the "Monster of Rock Tour" The Russians officials AND the band's management suggested to the band not to play this song in their line up (because of the bomb and gun fire). The band refused and decided to play the song at the last minute. Moscow officials were a little upset and threaten to stop the concert for the 4th time.. Please see the documentary of that tour. 1st time that actual Rock was in Russia because it was not allowed under the USSR. ********Monster of Rock 1991 Moscow Documentary******

Don't miss them, if they play close to where you live: good music, fun, plenty of jokes between songs & they want the crowd to participate, so learn lyrics before the show. I had fun evry time, even if the crowds are a bit crazy. No one goes there to pick a fight, even if it's chaotic. Yes, the movie and book this song features / is based on are very creepy. It follows the story of an average guy named Joe who gets most of his body blown apart in a World War. He's conscious but really doesn't know what's going on around him until he is able to communicate with the nurse you see in the video. And yes, the scene does show him being carted around like a circus attraction - an idea Joe came up with himself in the story
One of the best anti-war songs because it shows the true horrors of war. Being a shell of oneself with only your mind to keep you company while suffering from severe pain. Meanwhile, your government had its use for you and tosses you away like a piece of trash when you have served your purpose to it.
