Puerto rico has some of the most beautiful sounding string instruments, playing the tiple and cuatro together has such a beautiful sound Its one of the few things I genuinely love about my country
I’m a guitarist from PR. I kept my grandfather’s cuatro and promised myself to eventually learn it. I think I’ll be doing that now! The interesting thing about the instrument is that its the representative instrument of a very sunny and cheerful population, yet its sound (at least to me) is sonic melancholy. The chorus-ey feel makes melodies sound like a lament
As someone who’s half Puerto Rican, I really appreciate you showing this native instrument of theirs I had no clue about, it’s super badass and I’d love to get my hands on one some day!✌🏽❤️
Watching another video I was just thinking how cool would be for Rob to review the Cuatro Puertorriqueño. Lo and behold I find this video on the top of his feed. Thank you so much for doing this 🇵🇷
My grandfather and father both played the Puerto Rican Cuatro as well as 6/10/12-string guitar. The sound is not too dissimilar to a Mandolin. Really wish I had learned to play them (we still have the instruments). Such an awesome sounding instrument.
@@Alenator-pq9wf Really late reply but what do you mean? Do you mean that he wasn't playing a real cuatro, or just that he wasn't playing traditional music with it? Cuz if it's the latter, I already know it wasn't traditional. It still sounded amazing.
@@DrakiniteOfficial holy shit a response 2 years in the making! But basically whatI meant is that he wasn’t playing it in the traditional style which is fine, and it sounded great. Nice one Rob! That's the instrument I play! Good to see where they keep it on the museum. I've always wanted to go there... maybe after the pandemic scare dwindles a bit...
To anyone being like "wow, he learned this instantly". This instrument is tuned in fourths like a guitar or bass, starting with a b. It's like a 5-string bass without the high g string. If you can play guitar or bass, you can play this thing. I'm not saying what Rob played here wasn't awesome. I'm saying, that it isn't mindblowing at all, that he can play it, like many of you make it out to be.
It has the G string. He’s playing the 10 string version which has 5 notes(that are tuned exactly like a 5-string bass) which are either doubled or octaves
I was waiting for this day that he finally plays one of these instruments. Doesn't ever disappoint in his ability to use his many years of strings knowledge and bring that to an instrument like this. I would love to see him play a mandocello or irish bouzouki.
Never know this existed, it sounds great. And i love the fact that when you bring exotic instruments that you always have na expert in that field to teach some history about the instrument. Very cool!!
Its so interesting hearing your takes on Verde Luz man. As a cuatro player myself i can tell you that what you were pullyng off with the strumming and also playing the melody is something that we never really do. Ive tried it but not to this extent, and what you did sounded very nice. Another piece you could try if u ever get your hands on a cuatro is calld a "Seis Chorreao" its a beautiful piece with some pretty challenging licks that im sure youll kill if you tried it out. he did not learn in 10 minutes but it is good to know that he talk in a video about the cuatron is a good accompanist with the guitar and I would like that when the covid leaves you come to Puerto Rico or get someone to play the cuatro for you and learn more about him
“Rob scallion learns the triangle in 10 minutes.”
i don’t know if that’s possible man, master trianglists spend a life time honing their craft.
@@hydro5378 shut up he will
We know what that means..... TRIANGLE METAL
@Ivory_ Lagiacrus_YT definitely not the Knicks.
Puerto rico has some of the most beautiful sounding string instruments, playing the tiple and cuatro together has such a beautiful sound Its one of the few things I genuinely love about my country
At first I heard "the creator of latin america" and I was like wtf
😂😂😂😂
Rob, im a cuatro player, its an honor to seeing u play the national instrument of Puerto Rico
9:20 I never thought I'd hear the word CoÑo in one of rob's videos haha
I’m a guitarist from PR. I kept my grandfather’s cuatro and promised myself to eventually learn it. I think I’ll be doing that now! The interesting thing about the instrument is that its the representative instrument of a very sunny and cheerful population, yet its sound (at least to me) is sonic melancholy. The chorus-ey feel makes melodies sound like a lament
Puerto Rican Cuatro... Search for Jorge Glem to hear a Venezuelan Cuatro properly played! Great video, love Daniel here
With 100%, there is a series here. Traveling to different museums learning about instruments. I could watch this for hours.
cant wait for first of October!!
why
As someone who’s half Puerto Rican, I really appreciate you showing this native instrument of theirs I had no clue about, it’s super badass and I’d love to get my hands on one some day!✌🏽❤️
I’m puertorican and I can say that the cuatro has never gone out of style or has been stopped playing.
Boricua here. It's such a unique and lovely sound, the closest thing that resembles it sonically, is the balalaika, in my opinion
Watching another video I was just thinking how cool would be for Rob to review the Cuatro Puertorriqueño. Lo and behold I find this video on the top of his feed. Thank you so much for doing this 🇵🇷
This is really interesting for a guy who has a signature "ocho." LOL. XD.
If this ten-string instrument is the Cuatro, would his eight-string be a Tres?
So that would mean that a 6-string is a... dos?
@@Zaffre_ENTMT I think so, and a 4 string bass would be a "Uno Punto Cinco" i think
@@linzmusic554 I believe that's a 5-string...
Sadly, Uno doesn't have bass, just like the rest of the album.
@@Zaffre_ENTMT Not unlike One by Metallica then
It's hard not to fall in love with Rob when he's finding his way round a new instrument. The curator was going 😍
He’s like the avatar of all the instruments
Master of all instrument
My grandfather and father both played the Puerto Rican Cuatro as well as 6/10/12-string guitar. The sound is not too dissimilar to a Mandolin. Really wish I had learned to play them (we still have the instruments). Such an awesome sounding instrument.
Holy shit, that sound was amazing. I'd love to hear an album (or a long medley) of you jamming with the cuatro.
That’s not how an actual cuatro sounds but yeah it sounded nice
@@Alenator-pq9wf Really late reply but what do you mean? Do you mean that he wasn't playing a real cuatro, or just that he wasn't playing traditional music with it? Cuz if it's the latter, I already know it wasn't traditional. It still sounded amazing.
@@DrakiniteOfficial holy shit a response 2 years in the making! But basically whatI meant is that he wasn’t playing it in the traditional style which is fine, and it sounded great. My pet peeve is with people thinking that that’s how cuatro songs are usually played which isn’t true. I just wish what they played was closer to my culture.
You got fans in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷. Proud!!!
Rob at 7:17 talking about recurring licks in things like "the blues"
Me: the Licc 😐
That's so cool. the instrument and Rob's skill with stringed instruments
I love he’s like “I’m getting somewhere” ....... like 😳.... WHAT DO YOU MEAN?! YOU JUST MUSICED ON US
This year long journey through judicial history and unique instruments has been some of the coolest and most earnestly interesting content on RUclips.
its good to see people acknowledging the existence of Puerto Rico and not treating it like the tropical island equivalent of Finland
Yeah it's great that people are finally figuring out that we're more than just the street gang from West side story.
👍😎🍺
Lucky you. Here in Canada we're still treated like the 51st state that no one cares about
What’s a finland?
@@Holmaaron basically narnia but its a lot snowier and it actually exists
@@Holmaaron Come, come now. You know what he meant.
Thanx Rob for these video, as a full flesh puertorican mysel i felt proud!
First of October!!!!!
I love instruments like this! I’m American and I play guitar and bass and uke, but I picked up Charango last year. I love it! It’s an instrument from the Andes
can't wait tomorow, it'll be the first of october !!
Nice one Rob! That's the instrument I play! Good to see where they keep it on the museum. I've always wanted to go there... maybe after the pandemic scare dwindles a bit...
Rob with a hat that isn't his beanie cap makes me profoundly uncomfortable.
His ears are freakin me out!
HE HAS EARS?!?!
It's a brimmed beanie.
@@RivLoveshine nah they mean during the ad
As a Puerto Rican I really loved this video ❤️
First of october hype!!!!
It's like someone was trying to find a middle ground between a guitar and a mandolin. That's such a cool little instrument. I love the tone.
That and he's basically playing guitar riffs and chords. I would've loved for him to actually play Puertorican cuatro Music.
WEPA! Cheers from borinken Rob!
Never know this existed, it sounds great.
And i love the fact that when you bring exotic instruments that you always have na expert in that field to teach some history about the instrument.
Very cool!!
ruclips.net/video/c6stBZ9UJv4/видео.html
Rob is on a mission to master every single stringed instrument there is
Rob's videos always cheer me up
Rob ven a Argentina a tocar la "Sacha Guitarra" es un instrumento autóctono, tiene un sonido muy particular.
Thanks for doinh this video and showing the world our little islands national instrument ♡.
The Adam Neely anti-clickbait is really strong with this one
It's a beautiful instrument from a beautiful island, this is awesome saludos from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷🤘🏼
“That’s what you would play on like a 10 string”
“Well it is a 10 string...” 😂
looks like a reverse multi-scale , the extended part is on the high E side instead of the low E, very cool.
Dude he sounds so WASP-y but the moment he says a single word of spanish he sounds like he just stepped off the airplane.
Amazing.
My grandma actually bought on of these about 15 years ago and have it to my uncle and we found it in his stuff when he moved and there was a pack of new strings so we restringing and now I plan on learning it so this video was actually pretty crazy that it came out right after
