      @@timothyalan34 When he hits a wood tongue, it vibrates. The wood tongues vibrate the air in the box. The air in the box vibrates out making an amplified sound. Just like in an acoustic guitar. He tunes each tongue to a note.
      By carving away extra wood, the wood will be less heavy. The less heavy wood vibrates faster, creating a higher pitch.
      He needs the box so you can hear the sound. If he didn't have the box, the sound wouldn't travel as well. It'd be like playing an acoustic guitar without the body.
      Elijah Wyatt meant he could've talked about music theory. He could've talked about how all the notes are tuned to make nice sounding chords. How each note affects other notes. Etc.

      @@timothyalan34 I think he carves the the shapes, we see 2D the length etc. for the esthetics, plus likely the size tells the player which produce lower and which higher notes. But the actual thickness of tongue is more important for the pitch - just it's better if it has clues in it's shape and position. This reminded me of the African finger pianos, was it Ndebele or what was the name, then Marimba etc, and Hand drum, which sounds like the steel drums of the caribbean music they are of course meatallic sounding, nearly electronic - yet the echo box, and likely it's the vibration length why they resemble.

    Crazy world, this vid showed up in feed and My mom bought one of these from this very man in an art fair booth around 1993! We didn't have much money and remember it was about $80 back then. So glad my mom splurged on it. I've had the drum for the last 20 years, she died earlier this year so I 'officially' inherited the drum. It's been neat to have college friends to eventually my kids play on it. This video helped me find the artist and website to ask about getting the right kind of mallets to play on it. His son responded and they are sending me some mallets in the mail. Thanks utube!

    I think yall forget that wood can be incredibly resonate. Drums are often made of wood, and marimbas + glockenspiels (xylophones but wood lol) are made of wood, clarinets, etc are all made of wood. What is truly impressive is how they're made and tuned. The keys are so unique that I bet tuning them is a beast of a challenge.

    Among the reasons these particular instruments sound so nice - he tuned many of the tongues through the second harmonic. Hats off to the craftsman.

      @Apple Pie can you not hear it, my dear?

    • @woodsmith_1
      @woodsmith_1 4 года назад

      care to enlighten us then? Have you ever tuned any lamellophones?

    • @woodsmith_1
      @woodsmith_1 4 года назад

      @Apple Pie @Apple Pie indeed I have, many times. You didn't answer my question though: have you ever tuned a lamellophone?
      So your contention is with the language I used. What is 'a real musical phrase'?
      "Through the nth harmonic" would mean, starting at the first harmonic, tuning each successive harmonic or overtone encountered, up to the nth harmonic.
      In this videos case, the first harmonic is the fundamental mode, having one nodal point at the 'bridge', and the second harmonic could also be thought of as the first overtone, this one having two nodes: one at the bridge and the other roughly a third of the way towards the bridge from the end 9f the key.
      My original comment was that on some of the keys, both of these vibrational modes are tuned. Whether by accident or intentionally, it sounds good.
