My post-partum after giving birth was so bad that I was pretty much non-functional for the first few months of my baby’s life. My husband pretty much had to single parent for the first few months but because there is no paid paternity leave, he had to completely quit his job and we went down to 0 income. If my parents hadn’t been in a place to help us, I don’t know what we would have done. Paid paternity leave is essential.
Yes, that's something that I think is overlooked is that the mom needs help. I just had my baby 3 months ago and my husband's company started paid paternity leave a few years ago so he was off work for 2 months. He helped me so much while I adjusted to being a mom. I'm so glad you had your parents support and a husband that understood he needed to be there for you.
@@hollid90 I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them! And I also wouldn’t be here if they didn’t have the means to help. So many are not as fortunate as me. Paid paternity leave can literally be a life saving thing.
I heard that in America most people only get like 6 weeks maternity leave, some women literally break bones in childbirth, that’s not even enough to recover from a broken bone. It’s like the system needs people to have kids but then punishes both genders for doing it.
I’m from Australia, and hearing all of this is gobsmacking. We have a pretty decent maternity/paternity leave for both parents. Also, there has recently been some attention towards parents who go through paternal grief (ie; miscarriage, stillbirth, etc)
Paternity leave also helps the mom. I suffered from post partum depression with my 2 girls. My husband had to take unpaid leave and without him, I don’t know what I would have done.
It’s beneficial for everyone in the situation- I just wish that they called this a feminist issue (as it is) instead of pretending “men’s rights” are a thing.
Yup. I didn’t even have postpartum and my husband had around 6 weeks off. I don’t know what I would have done without him home full time for that time. He took such great care of me and our babies. Still does but that time off work was so important for our family.
@@flowermom3507 Seriously! Especially C sections which are becoming more common- it’s *such* an invasive surgery and mothers are expected to just be totally fine right after, up and doing physical work, taking care of a newborn, having sex, and cooking and cleaning and shit. It’s insane to me. Less invasive surgeries regularly has people out of commission for 6+ weeks *without* a newborn on top of all of it!! We absolutely need mandatory maternity and paternity leave. People claim to care about family values and children and shit but somehow do not support leave? Fucking hell. Gets me so worked up, and I don’t even have kids and plan to never do so. So much respect for all of you mothers and fathers out there that made it work, but it makes me so mad that you have to go through it in the first place. A year of leave for both parents would create a much more healthy society and more developed children that can be more productive over their life, there is no downside.
@@MiuXiu All of the issues they've discussed are the major reasons WHY I never had kids. I like kids, I thought when I was young I would have kids, but when I hit adulthood, and looked at the way our society is actively structured AGAINST parenthood, yet demands so much of parents, I just couldn't get the numbers to add up.
I was in the army during my wife’s entire pregnancy and I missed her giving birth . I wasn’t in my daughters life until she was 3months old. What I would give to get those days off back than!! It makes sick to hear joe say that bullshit. Smdh
I’m so sorry. I was just M-Day nasty guard when my daughter was born and my husband was luckily able to be present during birth. But that was back when the army still had only 2 weeks for paternity leave IF they were home and I struggled deeply with post partum depression. The fathers need to be home longer than what they’re given, if not as long as the mothers. It’s unfair. The 3 weeks y’all have in the army now still aren’t enough.

I think it's super rad Hasan touched on making past mistakes about misogynist perspectives. That's setting a great example for impressionable viewers because he's acknowledging that we all make mistakes. The important thing is that we try to learn from them and do better. I think social media perpetuates this "mistakeless" narrative that nobody can fuck up, and that's damaging. I appreciate he's having that conversation.

That's actually why I started watching Hasan daily. His own displays of personal growth are probably one of the biggest ways he can help people still in ignorant mindsets start to see a different perspective. As much as I wish people would just not be assholes and inherently have empathy towards people different to themselves, having an attractive, white-passing cis-het male actively fight against racism, misogyny, and the like is one of the best ways to reach audiences that might not otherwise come across that content and is so important to the cause. Hey there! I'm a social worker, working primarily with kids on the spectrum, with special needs and behavioural issues. I highly recommend that *everyone* look into attachment theory and attachment injuries. It's important to not self-diagnose, but learning about attachment can help clarify your own issues with emotion and regulation. I hope it's okay that I popped up here with my two cents - trying to spread the word and help heal generational trauma. Splitting up resources into other comments because RUclips is deleting them?
Dr. Kirk Honda from Psychology in Seattle is an excellent resource for laymen to learn about attachment and family systems. Susan Forward has a book called Toxic Parents that is a good read for regular people. A more advanced (language-wise) book is The Body Keeps The Score, it covers how trauma affects the body and mind.
And of course, therapy. Therapy is sadly expensive and thus a privilege, but if you can find a source that meets your budget it could be the best investment you'll ever make. Peace and love.
Well I had the exact opposite experience, my dad telling me to man up as a child pulled me through my depression phase later on in life. The idea that men can endure anything really put into perspective all the suffering that men in the past have endured and that my depression was self inflicted, so in order to overcome this I need to be stronger (become a real man) if you will.

Paternity leave is also for the mother. Did he not take leave to help his wife in the first month or so? You know he had the resources to. If so, I feel bad for his wife but something tells me he probably took some leave when his children were born. My husband obviously bonded with our babies during his paternity leave, but honestly his leave had a much bigger benefit to me than anyone else. I’m a stay at home mom so he took care of everything I normally would during that time so I could nurse and sleep.
Oh wow, that sounds amazing and I sure envy you! I am a stay at home mom as well and my husband never got more than 1-2 days max off work (he works 7 days a week.) He was there with us in the hospital the day our babies were born then I was there by myself with the babies for the remainder of the hospital stay & beyond. It was especially hard this last time around when I also had the 2 older girls to take care of, plus packing/unpacking all of our belongings to move house. Then in the middle of moving, our vehicle was totaled by someone who t-boned us with all the kids in the car, so I then also had to figure out insurance shit and rental stuff and all of that BS by myself… on top of everything else. Add to all that a newborn who wanted to nurse every 45mins and never slept unless I was holding her (still doesn’t, almost 18 months later) and idk how I’ve managed to survive let alone keep everyone else going this whole time! Having my husband there for even the first month would’ve been fucking HEAVEN. This should not be an issue in fucking 2021- men should absolutely get time off to bond with their babies and help their wives through the extremely difficult transition process. It’s absolute BS that men aren’t given that opportunity in the US, supposedly the “greatest country in the world!”
I had an extremely difficult time after my first pregnancy. I don’t know what I would have done without my husband there to help. He saved my life. Literally. He was my rock, my sanity, my safe space. Everything. Because we were both able to be home it literally helped in every single way possible. Because of him I was back on my feet physically, mentally, and everything else so much faster. He was also able to bond with our Son and didn’t feel robbed or left out and he always tells me how incredibly thankful he is for that. I think if the parents feel it’s right for them it should absolutely be an option. I don’t know what all the specifics would look like, but it does need to be an option. There’s so many positives I wouldn’t even have the time to list them here. Just YES.

Mandatory paternity leave is actually a great way to achieve equal opportunities in the job market for all genders. An employer will have less incentive to hire a man over a woman if both get the same time off after a pregnancy. It's a feminist (equal rights) issue, not a mens rights issue.
SAY IT LOUDER. few people realize that this plays into the wage gap/equal opportunity issue. employers are less likely to hire a woman simply for the fact that they are (mostly) biologically able to have a child and would necessitate maternity leave for it

My husband was only allowed 5 days away from his job, and because I was induced, it took my body about 3-4 days to finally get the baby out. So when he (my son) was finally born, my husband had to go back to work the VERY NEXT DAY; while I sat in the hospital by myself, recovering and in pain, all alone with a newborn. He came every day when he was off of work, but besides that, his boss gave him such a small window of opportunity to appreciate such a precious time/moment in our lives. This was ESPECIALLY fucked up considering his boss is a “family friend”/“SECOND FATHER” to my husband.. his boss is also very conservative and pro-MAGA of course. Not only that, but our conception of this baby was a MIRACLE to begin with! My husband had been battling stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma for 5 years during the time we found out we were pregnant. Numerous doctors before we found out we conceived had told him it was most likely he would never be able to conceive unless he stored sperm due to how much chemotherapy he had received. His boss knew all of this history, and still made the call to only allow him 5 days off of work to be with me through the birthing process. It’s a disgrace and an actual joke. I don’t like his boss at all, but I have to tolerate him because of how much my husband apparently respects this man.
Saying ‘parental care is for the person who gave birth’ ignores the fact that women need to physically recover from childbirth, which makes caring for a newborn infant impossible without help. Also women traditionally had support networks of other new mothers and family to help them out. As long as we continue to promote individualism and the nuclear family, both parents need leave to care for a newborn.

I fucking love this paternity leave convo! Im a swede, father of 3 and a Engineer. I spent 10 months with each of my kids (30 months in total) on Paid leave. It actually makes me really sad seeing how mothers and fathers are treated in the states. I’m so grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to get a real connection with my kids, me and my wife share parenthood and a relationship where our kids can go to both of us to talk about things bothering them or if they’re sad.. I genuinely believe the world would be a better place if every child could have that relationship with their parents..

No joke, I love that two men, one who is a father, are talking positively about paid family leave. We need more men talking about this as well. Thank you 💕
I gave birth to my son on a Thursday and my sons father had to go to work that Friday or he would get a point towards termination. With me being on unpaid maternity leave we couldn’t afford for him to miss a day, much less, lose his job. I spent the first night of my babies life exhausted, lethargic, and alone. Every day after that was severe depression because i was doing everything by myself day and night while he worked. it killed our relationship to an unrepairable place. it made me resent him for something that wasn’t even his fault.. It’s been 7 years and we have since talked about it and he confessed how much it hurt him too. Him not being able to be apart of the early days of our child’s life, and missing out on huge milestones. He felt left out on huge bonding time and not being able to help me when I needed him. It killed him. It showed me how much it effected us both differently. We co parent very well now and are great friends, but i believe, if he would have been able to be apart of my sons life in the beginning, it would have changed the course of our family. i’m glad u covered that topic today because it’s REALLY important.
I live in Canada. The simple idea that women have to pay to have their children to be born in a hospital really breaks my heart. We also get a year worth of maturity leave. America really out there thinking they are the best country out there. Canada isn't to much better but, at least we can go to the hospital and not leave with a hearty bill. I do not mind paying taxes so that I and millions of other people can go to the hospital when they need to, and not have to worry.
Fellow Canadian here, my husband and I are a double income with very good paying jobs, no mortgage as we own our house and we still go back and forth on having children due to the financial impact .. I don’t understand how people in the US have children Hassan made a comment about the roads in Canada being bad and that may be true in places but I’ve lived in communities with excellent roads. Regardless, I would rather pay taxes then end up in crippling debt from medical bills
Although I'm not a parent, I feel you as a fellow Canuck. Paternal leave contributes to peace of mind, which means less stress and less cost to the healthcare system in the long run.
Many of us hate it here but can’t afford to leave. The america is the best place on earth ppl are just really loud. The rest of us are just embarrassed and depressed.

Why do you guys not parody the news transitions. Maybe some horns and a slide image. Think Colbert report style. It would add a lot of life to the production.
This, I wanna see a bit more crew input in Leftovers, they have so much trained talent restraining themselves just because they’re talking politics- in my opinion the point of a channel like h3 having a politics show is that it should feel light hearted and vibrant (they’re close already, but a bit more structure would help), similar in tone to Some More News or John Oliver, engaging and fun to outsiders but maintaining the ability to talk about serious matters without tonal whiplash. I think with Hasan’s more reserved nature means he would be able to be a great straightman to Ethan’s more abstract shenanigans likes the Gatsby
The whole Joe Rogan paternity leave thing just boils down to the fact that he didn't have a father figure in his own life which seems to have led him to this distorted and completely ridiculous take, which not only comes from ignorance, but from childhood trauma, plain and simple. Quite fucking sad. Grown man Joe Rogan should take care of his mental health as much as he dead lifts weights.
@@otg_dre Imagine recognizing someone has childhood trauma (don't we all as you say) being seen as "talking down"... I literally said it's sad and wished he had the mental health support he needs, as we all need. Btw, who gives two fucks about how much money he has, as if that is something which prevents someone from being criticized or would exempt this person from being flawed. He's still an idiot when it comes to paternity leave. In this case, an idiot that has millions but does not have a great human take on a human matter such as being a father. Which again, is sad. Not only sad but harming to people like you that really put some sort of effort into believing being rich is something more than just having lots of money... Holy shit.
hear me out I have an Australian/American dual citizenship, to hear about all these medical coverage issues that go on in the US is mind boggling to me. Here in Australia, most problems are covered. Doctors appointments are free, and prescriptions cost next to nothing compared to how it would be without Medicare. For example my medications monthly literally only cost me $10, without Medicare I would have to pay $70. My grandmothers kidney medications would usually cost her $160, with Medicare it’s $10-$30. Mental and most Physical Healthcare’s are subsidised here and it works beautifully in our country. I’ve always wondered why America just won’t do the same thing, in some states at the very least. The sad thing is, all of this is completely do-able by the way. The rich simply don’t want to pay a little more tax, and the poor end up suffering. So many people need this help in the US, please talk about this more!
Being a Dane, I'm in the opposite ring-corner. I cannot fathom how it works... like... logistically, to pop out a baby, and go back to your full time job 2 weeks later. How is it done? Do you depend on the grandparents? My parents are too old and too sick to care for a newborn. And at that age, you have to wake up every two hours to feed the lil' bugger. How do you contribute anything of value to a workplace, with a foggy brain from sleep deprivation and spit up on your uniform. I used to work at McDonald's while in high school, and I was much less tired back then, and still managed to get a serious burn on my forearm, and hit my hand on a metal shelf, getting a flesh wound down to the bone. Imagine me operating heavy machinery, after not sleeping for three months straight. I don't understand how it is done.. And I love working.. Love it.. But if I'm having a baby, I'm taking some serious paid maternity leave. And so is the father, because I'm not doing that shit alone.
I wish Ethan would let Hasan finish his thoughts... so many times I can hear Hasan starts talking about such an interesting point and then Ethan interrupts him.

Paid paternity leave is essential.
you go girl! tell em !!!!!
Not to mention the physical recovery moms going through after birth.

Great point! 👍 thank you
it can be both a feminist and mens right issue.
@@Wooplot ofcourse, though feminism includes men, it's about equality.
@@luchudepohl6310 Yeah.

@@tylermcnally9931 increase what??? You think the government is going to make self driving cars? You think Nasa can compete with space x? it took Nasa like 4 decades to get anything in orbit...

I love this show because it gets a lot of younger people listening to what’s going on in current news/. The regular news is so boring and in-entertaining. This set up makes it so much easier to consume politics.
I agree. My 20 yr old daughter turned me on to this program!
“In America you gotta work.” Says professional podcaster.
@@Dyljim meh it's about the content and what's said more than anything else but y not
They'd need to up the studio budget to at least $100 trillion for that kind of tech
Not hearing Dan say “two” has left my soul empty.
@@user-gc1wj8tt2p paternity leave: infamously the same as having sex with… sex workers
Imagine talking down on a multi millionaire because of childhood trauma, something we all could relate to.
If you think any media personality isn't deeply flawed you should have a psych eval.
Holy shit.

I’m pretty sure Hasan is the only person on the planet who can pull off patriotic button-up shirts.
nahh he just dosent have shitty opinions while weariing em lol
Hasan's, Jordan Peterson impression is alarmingly good.
He's listened to many hours of JP. There's a 3 hour long take down he did taking down JP floating around on RUclips
Ethan should never try to do a Jordan Peterson impression ever again lol
hear me out
I have an Australian/American dual citizenship, to hear about all these medical coverage issues that go on in the US is mind boggling to me.
I’ve been having hasanabi withdrawals since he took the weekend off. This was much needed thank you guys lol
Good to know I'm not the only one man 🤝 the struggle is real 😔😔
Hasan is life.
So true, maybe I have a problem
100% agree
I wish Ethan would let Hasan finish his thoughts... so many times I can hear Hasan starts talking about such an interesting point and then Ethan interrupts him.
Lol he’ll never
Ethan just gets excited 😆
Love to see Ethan getting more and more educated on politics as each episode comes. Azan you are the best. HasL
I gotta say: im a huge fan H3 & Hasan (I use him as a source of news) and this podcast is a great listen for commentary, for humor, for news, and for keeping myself educated about history in politics at home and abroad.
