ROUGH POINT - THE ULTIMATE PRIVATE TOUR, NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND

Rough Point is the Doris Duke estate in Newport, Rhode Island. Rough Point is made up of a beautiful mansion, gardens and museum. Rough Point has an extensive collection of fine and decorative arts as well as a sprawling historic landscape with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The property is enjoyed on my private tour - basically - as it was during the lifetime of its most famous owner, the heiress Doris Duke.
Rough Point mansion is Gothic-style. Paintings within its museum include works by Gainsborough, van Dyck, Reynolds, Bol and Renoir. The formal gardens and full grounds are quite special.

She was the nicest woman I ever met. She and I hit it off when I was a young 17 year old girl. Ms. Duke alway’s called my mom and asked if she'd mind if she could see me. My mom loved her so much and they even spoke about humanitarian aid and Ms Duke helped my mom who devoted her life to humanitarian aid all over the world. My grandfather made pearls for her one of a kind. It was shocking when she asked my mother about a set of pearls she was wearing. That's when we learned of that as my grandfather was the man who made one of a kind design jewelry introducing pearls to the Japanese made so many different styles for many. He also was the one if you're wearing an Eternity band made the first in the world. I'm really happy I have the first he made. Ms Duke became a very important part of my life and certain decisions I'd ask her advice for. It breaks my heart what the state of New Jersey has been endlessly doing to her estate the grounds that she loved so dearly her amazing trees she had flown in from Africa and planted so perfectly. I'll often go quietly and just sit and remember those wounderful moments memories of having the pleasure of knowing the real woman behind certain people's beliefs. There's so many things people aren't aware of that she deserves credit for and the state has some nerve damaging what truly could have been a fantastic historical history lesson and more. I miss her dearly. Was she close to her family? I'll never speak regarding that. She in fact lived very down to earth often she'd even randomly leave her house and enjoy the people who came to visit her beautiful green houses. I remember the first time I saw her do it and the faces of shock and amazement on people's faces. She wasn't what people assumed she was in any sense or did she care much for having to be private protected 247. I remember a real woman human being. Money is nice but there's many things it can't buy it can't bring joy and happiness
She often said certain thing's like that to me. I can say I am greatful for certain part's of the 80’s and when she suddenly passed away I was on the road. I thank her for the advice she gave me on that one as well. Wonderfully dressed alway’s Ms Duke looked even in her long flowing dressed she'd wear relaxing and her lovely spots wear. She brought me my frist amazing Ralph Lauren sweater. I cherish every moment good or sad when around her.

Ms. Zen, thanks so much for your lengthy reply. You have clearly elevated the understanding and special character of Ms. Duke. In addition to her Newport Rough Point estate, we visited her estate in Hawaii, Shangri La which is - in a word - amazing. Great back story about how she acquired the land for Shangri La from he friend, the US president. Please feel free to add any additional comments and stories about Ms. Duke as a reply. I would love to hear them; we would love to hear them. Further, if you know why Ms. Duke authorized her version of Islamic art shown in Shangri La - a hard break with Islamic art dictates/traditions (the art shows people and animals) please let me know. Carla and I were at Rough Point not long ago. It was also one of our favorites. If you do not know Doris' life story it is well worth exploring. Great video as usual. Perfect music choice.

Ms. Duke must have been color blind, some of the interiors are ghastly from a chromatic standpoint

Mr. Roach, thanks for commenting on my video. I did not have the same reaction to the color palates within Rough Point. That said, the best part of her estate was the grounds, in my opinion. Interestingly, her Hawaii estate Shangri La utilized some unusual interior design choices, some folks might even say - tacky. The Hawaii beach location was spectacular, so who cares about interiors.
