Lan Del Rey - Ultraviolence (Lyrics)
He used to call me DN
That stood for Deadly Nightshade
'Cause I was filled with poison
But blessed with beauty and rage
Jim told me that, he hit me and it felt like a kiss
Jim brought me back, reminded me of when we were kids
With his ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
I can hear sirens, sirens
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
I can hear violins, violins
Give me all of that ultraviolence
He used to call me poison
Like I was Poison Ivy
I could have died right there
'Cause he was right beside me
Jim raised me up, he hurt me but it felt like true love
Jim taught me that, loving him was never enough
With his ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
I can hear sirens, sirens
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
I can hear violins, violins
Give me all of that ultraviolence
We could go back to New York
Loving you was really hard
We could go back to Woodstock
Where they don't know who we are
Heaven is on Earth
I would do anything for you, baby
Blessed is this union
Crying tears of gold like lemonade
I love you the first time, I love you the last time
Yo soy la princesa, comprende mis white lines
'Cause I'm your jazz singer and you're my cult leader
I love you forever, I love you forever
With his ultraviolence (Lay me down tonight)
Ultraviolence (In my linen and curls)
Ultraviolence (Lay me down tonight)
Ultraviolence (Riviera Girls)
I can hear sirens, sirens
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
I can hear violins, violins
Give me all of that ultraviolence - Видеоклипы

Lana invented aesthetic.
Aesthetic existed before Lana. Be careful what you say. I'm not hating just correcting.
And it was a trend even without Lana, it is just people who didn't recognize aesthetic found Lana and started thinking this. Just correcting again not hating.

All my life singing "he´s a comedian..." instead of "he used to call me DN" xD Lol
Wow, what a liryc
As much as I love Lana’s new works, nothing will EVER top the Ultraviolence era.
there’s a difference between romanticizing and portraying. she’s not saying it’s good to be in an abusive relationship, she’s singing from the point of view of a woman who is trapped in one and in deep denial, which resonates with many.
tell it.
Very well said !! That is a perfect description of this song and what it's meaning/ intent is. Thank you for sharing such a concise and helpful description!!!
She is an incredible artist. I just wish there were more intelligent people like you out there. Sadly, I believe most people are loosing their ability to think logically. The discussions I have had with people lately because "they know its true because they saw a story on facebook." God help us all.
she's showing the "he isn't hurting me he loves me" side of being in a toxic relationship.

@@spippin for people with bad taste
I am a death metal musician, but I recognize talent in other genres. Miss Del Rey(i know that"s not her real name)is the best in the pop world at this moment. There is a sultry genius to her. It's easy for people to hate on things they don't understand, but as one who has stepped out of his comfort zone; I would ask you not to hate this artwork, but accept it as an alien idea. Men were afraid of electricity at one time.
I can totally relate. I'm a lover of music, and genres don't defy my taste in music. Though i mostly listen to bands like Judas Priest, PanterA, Primus and Death, i also listen to rap music like N.W.A and Eminem, electronic music like Major Lazer and so on...
Again, music taste not defied by genres, but i find that most modern music is really awful, so it's really nice to see new artist like Lana Del Rey, producing soulful, magical music! And seeing that other people like yourself, that also normally listens to metal, also likes this says quite something about an artist from a whole other genre!
***** same lol
I feel ya, I normally listen to metal as well like lamb of God, suicide silence, slayer, Pantera, also a big fan of deftones, recently been listening to a lot of Chino Moreno's side projects like crosses and team sleep, but when I first heard lana I was thinking my god, finally a artist who is sincere and makes the music she wants
I personnaly see NO talent in metal
I respect your opinion, but I do beleive it is narrow.I think if you give music a chance, you will find that there are a myriad of great choices to listen to. OPEN YOUR MIND!!!!
almost 10 years later, this song still really gets me. I recently managed to escape an abusive relationship where i was simultaneously 'loved' and abused daily. It was so exhausting, confusing and i felt trapped. Whatever your interpretation is of the lyrics, this song is so powerful. Lana's music has always reminded me to stay true and stand up for myself. I hope anybody going through similar finds peace and true happiness
ultraviolence is a masterpiece so ethereal
It mesmerized me ever since the first time, and this though I am her father's age, I crossed the generational gap in three minutes to become her fan.
She's not glamorizing abuse, she's just trying to explain to us how a woman in love with an abusive person feels: she tries to justify every form of abuse as if it was her fault or a love proof. This song is so much deeper than everybody thinks. And whether she's talking about physical or psychological violence, she's not glamorizing it, just showing the point of view of a manipulated woman by a toxic man.
EDIT : Thank you so much for your support ♡ and by the way, the song is not only about strictly heterosexual toxic relationships, but about everything kind of relationships ;)

@@Jami-kj4fm she can only show her own perspective, if she never been abused then she should not have wrote this, if SHE felt this way then ok, but I can tell you most victims do NOT feel like this. Abuse is scary, you feel trapped, you feel small, you feel embarrassed! You think the person hurting you loves you, and is just unable to control their rage, or you did something to provoke them! I don’t think I’ll ever get over this masterpiece
Lana Del Rey perfectly embodies the innocent, misguided, lost and abused American youth; abused by ideology, envy and greed.
I feel like that's the origin of her hauntingly beautifully sound, that pain.
Depeche Mode fan here I guess oh new name then my respond seem pointless but who cares
I completely agree!
This generation is utterly apathetic. People only 'care' about whatever popular cause is 'in' these days. This means they truly care about nothing.
joemcbee that's because they're androids made of flesh and bone. only 2% of humans born since 1995 and forward have a personality. the rest are just wheels in a brainwashing machinery ruled by their master: technology. this is horrible and sad to say but it's actually true.
@@TaraTheAndroid technology really is a huge part of why people have become so disconnected. On top of that, the 'progressive' goal is destroying the traditional family unit, by promoting single mother families, marginalizing the importance the role of fathers in the family.
They really are a product of their environment. There are easy to see examples in the comments for this video. things talking about 'having a mental breakdown eating sugar' trying to sound legit in order to get likes. I rarely see any honest thoughts from anyone. But they dont know any better. Maybe it's just a phase kids will grow out of as they mature. Either way people need to start putting down the phones and reconnect with the people in their lives. Your parents aren't going to live forever. people just don't understand the lyrics of this song. She's not romanticizing anything, she's singing about the point of view of a victim of abuse. There's so much behind her lyrics and this song represents it so well. Love this masterpiece
Hii
Exactly !!
This is actually quite important to talk about because a lot of times people blame women for the abuse done to them or downplay it because they don’t leave their abuser, but it’s so much complicated than that.
The brain of an abused woman doesn’t see things like she would have done it before she was in that abusive relationship
@@clotildemartinezlopez7017 I couldn’t agree more. The abusive person has to brainwash the victim into believing that they’re safe with them.
@@Moonsong_ it’s not just that also if the victim believes she loves him that turns into a trauma bond and she feels like it’s better to be in that abusive situation than the feeling of being without that person even if that abuse is truly destroying her.
That’s why you should never truly get mad and leave alone a victim of abuse you have to make her realize that there’s a world outside of that relationship. Because the abuser also will do everything to isolate her and control her so she sees him as her whole reality and life and that way the trauma attachment gets stronger
Or maybe thats her artistic thing, her gloomy doomy american gothic part of women that feminists can't accept nowadays. If you leave to feminists pulp and american gothic will cease to exist.
Just found this song and it reminds me of my parents. They were together since they were 16 until mid 50s 4 years ago, my dads nickname is Jim, it's what my mum would call him and he was abusive and aggressive to her on and off for many years with a drinking and drug problem. But there was still an underlying love, and they had so many stories from their past they shared together until eventually having me. Such a shame things had to end that way after so long.

As the daughter of a woman who suffered domestic violence at the hands of my father for 22 years of her life, i dont get why Lana is accused of glamorizing violence; if you’ve ever known someone thats in an abusive relationship but refuses to leave because they “love” their abusive partner, ultraviolence’s lyrics actually do make sense given that the song is a traumatized woman’s permanent state of mind just put into words and music.
sorry you had to go through that :((

Imagine not being emotionally, perspectively and intellectually capable enough to understand that this song isn’t about glorifying anything. Emotions are so much more complicated than good and bad. If he hit her then it is abuse...how can it feels like a kiss?
Exactly~ most abusive relationships end up with the other (person who's being abused) feeling important or that if he hits me then he must truly love me. They are blinded by their harmful relationship.

He did hit me but it did not felt like a kiss and I do not look pretty when I cry.
okay, I just had a light go off in my head. might only make sense to me, but I think I "get" the story behind her videos. I kept thinking that it was different guys in each are her many lovers over the years. thinking she likes the older guy for security and feeling safe, and the younger when she wants to be wild and live free like a bird. but I now I think this is the same guy, just over different periods of his life. Because she died when they were young, these times that we see her with him in his older age it's just his memory of her. his one true love. he keeps aging and changing through the years, but she never does. so with this video in particular I think it's either him remembering their actual wedding, or fantasizing and dreaming about what it would have been like, or maybe (this is what I'm going with) this is the moment he dies. And he's finally with her forever now that he died too. I think the later goes more in line with the lyrics. At least IMO. I love this video, along with all the other ones. they always make me think. PS.National Anthem would either be an actual affair she had, but I don't think so. I think it's the old man thinking back on this country's history, all that he's witnessed over the years. I think every man secretly wants to know what it would have been like to be in JFK's shoes. He's basically a martyr to Americans. This guy would have come from that era. And let's face it, it's every man's dream to have their Jackie.O AND Marilyn Monroe. In his dream he always thinks of Lana and when they were together. So in the National Anthem video he places her in the role for both Jackie and Marilyn. She's is both to him embodied in one soul. I think the ending in particular is him dying on the inside every time he thinks about her. his soul mate and true love. and remembers because of his carelessness he lost her for good. now Born to Die makes a lot more sense to me in a way. now when I hear it I think it's her trying to tell him not to feel bad about what happened, not his fault, because they were both born to die. she's calling to him from heaven singing that song as well. maybe I just think way too much. over-analyzing shit constantly. but it's so much fun :)
Wow....so fucking deep. You just made me appreciate so much right now
Blair Bierman thank you so much for taking the time to say that. made my day. seriously.
Blair Bierman And if you want to go even deeper :) Last night I went on a Lana binge and watched all the videos from the first released, well maybe not first ever, but I started at Video Games and went through to this one. Another thing I noticed is a lot of biblical imagery in the videos. Like in Born to Die when she's in the church on the throne, if you notice there is a painting behind her of Mary holding Christ after the crucifixion. I know it's famous, but after searching for the name and artist for 30+ minutes with no luck I gave up. But it's a 27 seconds into the video. And in the beginning when Lana is being held in the guys arms in front of the American flag it reminded me of paintings I've seen of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus. Then in the ending after the car crash they show him holding her in his arms and the pose seems very much like the 'Pieta' by Michelangelo. And in regards to the theory I have about the Born to Die video being a vision of heaven for the guy, as well as this one, if you notice in Born to Die when they are laying in bed together at 1 minute 58 seconds, the bed looks more like a casket at a funeral with flowers surrounding it all around. And the flooring in the Chapel in Born to Die is the white and black checkerboard, which is the same type of flooring in the Chapel in this video. Then the next video is Blue Jeans. In that video there is imagery that again reminds me of Christ. When she is in the water and he's holding her, it's almost like he's baptizing her. As if he was John the Baptist and she is Christ. And the lyrics of Blue Jeans could be very much interpreted to be about Christ. The character she is talking about through the entire song could be in fact Christ. Not saying it is, but if you listen to the lyrics with that in mind I think you'll see what I'm talking about. In Ride she almost seems to play the role of Mary Magdalene. And then in another way I think a lot of her music and videos are about the cult of America. Putting America in the role of Savior, but will it suffer the same kind of demise in the end? Anyway, I could go on for days. I think I think too much, but that's just me I guess. I've always been a creative, definitely right brained from the start. I love music and art, and all of it constantly inspires me. I'm a photographer, and Lana has been my muse for years now. Anyway, I'm glad someone out there gets where I'm coming from, and doesn't think I'm crazy for it :)
Wow! I'm loving your theories! ;) I've had similar and different ones over the years if you check out shades of cool I should have a comment still on there explaining my theories on westcoast and shades.o.c if you wanna check it out? An thanks for making my day with those comments!!! ;)
Wow... so I read your whole first theory... and I kinda started crying, it really touched me..
Happy early 10th anniversary to Ultraviolence by Lana del Ray!
Whenever I feel like feeling mellow dramatic I come to this song
I'm a man of 30 years old and I just discovered her music two days ago ... Her music is like some sort of magic spell ...
💯
Sir, kiss me
it’s so ethereal
How did you just discover her? She literally came out with music on tumblr when you were a teenager
Welcome to the cult
She absolutely got a grammy in my reality. She doesn't need to win bullshit to win.
Grammys need Lana ✨
Who cares? She is a living legend and grammy is just a trendy moment, a marketing thing.
Best Poet of All Time Lana Del Rey ❤
Listening to it isn't enough. I NEED THIS SONG IN MY VEINS
How did cardi b win a grammy before lana
_we live in a society-_
please leave worthless awards out of the comments section. it's just like in The Simpsons. "wow, an award statue! oh, no, it's a grammy" and then he throws it away
ON THE FU*KING POINT LANA DESERVES A GRAMMY FOR EACH SONG
gr*mmy??:D
because shallow commercialism is rewarded.
Lana is bette r off without awards. it gives her the edge
This whole grammy thing is not fair at all, the grammy doesn't deserve Lana.
Let's be honest, this song didn't come up our recommendations. We searched for it.

@@okand6156 happy for u
So tragic and cinematic at the same time!! Oh,,, and so violently beautiful too!!
9 years ago lana released the album ultraviolence, simply one of her best albums🖤
I get why she's mad. She's out here writing her own songs and they sound straight up like poetry, but instead people who are singing generic pop songs with no significant meaning written by someone else are winning. This is art, and some of the other artist that won are legit just mass producing cheap music made for drunk people in night clubs. Not all of them, but many.
Agreed ✅
You're absolutely right ❤
Exactly
Honest truth i love it and i agree.... Waiting for some people to come and be mad because of ur brutal honesty which is not wrong
Lana has lots of success too and a solid ride or die fanbase. And she gets to live a more private life than these ultra famous celebrities. I understand the frustration because the critics and mainstream public were totally unfair to her during the Born to Die era and the subsequent albums too, but in terms of success and fanbase, I think she's doing alright. Her music is amazing but is not for the masses and that's alright.
"I don't even know what heroin's like, but I would imagine it's kinda like listening to a Del Rey song."
and without the bad side effects ;)
He hit me and it felt like a kiss 💋
She doesn't need over-the-top music videos to sell her songs, she doesn't need gimmicks or "stripper" style dancing. She just needs her angelic voice and real simple video. This is why I love her. :)
↑ totally agreed
well put.
exactly
Simple is not the same as simplistic. This is simplistic.
'"Stripper" style dancing'? What about "Ride"? I love Lana but it's always the same videos with the same effect...
This song is so toxic but still a masterpiece
Ela tinha uma mexerica, um vestido de noiva, um iPhone 6 e um sonho. E assim fez história.
😂❤
kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk GENIAL
1]
He used to call me DN
That stood for Deadly Nightshade
Cause I was filled with poison
But blessed with beauty and rage
Jim told me that
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
Jim brought me back
Reminded me of when we were kids
[Chorus]
With his Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
I can hear sirens, sirens
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
I can hear violins, violins
Give me all of that Ultraviolence
[Verse 2]
He used to call me poison
Like I was poison ivy
I could have died right there
Cause he was right beside me
Jim raised me up
He hurt me but it felt like true love
Jim taught me that
Loving him was never enough
[Chorus]
With his Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
I can hear sirens, sirens
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
I can hear violins, violins
Give me all of that Ultraviolence
[Bridge]
We could go back to New York
Loving you was really hard
We could go back to Woodstock
Where they don't know who we are
Heaven is on Earth
I would do anything for you, babe
Blessed is this union
Crying tears of gold like lemonade
[Interlude (Spoken)]
I love you the first time, I love you the last time
Yo soy la princesa, comprende mis white lines
Cause I'm your jazz singer and you're my cult leader
I love you forever, I love you forever
[Chorus]
With his Ultraviolence
(Lay me down tonight)
Ultraviolence
(In my linen and curls)
Ultraviolence
(Lay me down tonight)
Ultraviolence
(Riviera Girls)
I can hear sirens, sirens
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
I can hear violins, violins
Give me all of that Ultraviolence
Tanks

for me, this song isn't glamorizing abuse. it takes us into the mind of someone in an abusive relationship. when you're in a codependent, abusive (emotional or physical) relationship you don't see what other people are seeing. you just know you love the person and you can't afford to lose them, love means pain and you're ready to receive every blow just so that person stays. i've been there. it's painful to leave and heal but more painful to stay. this song is deep and real but it's difficult to understand when you haven't lived it.
incredible description i completely agree
empecé a aprender español gracias a esa misma frase de la canción 😭
Wowwww
