    When we heard rumors there might be football games on Monday night, most folks' reaction was, "Who would watch games during the week?" But as a kid, it was THRILLING to stay up late and watch MNF with my dad. Before long, it was the most watched program nearly every week!

    • @PaulGaither
      @PaulGaither 5 месяцев назад +3

      But "nobody" likes Thursday football other than the NFL and sponsors. We watch because it is on, but the ratings are far worse thn MNF and it is still easy for me to forget it is even happening.
      That, and I am a nerd. Thursday is D&D night, so I won't watch unless it is my team.

    To us kids growing up in the 70s/80s, there was no better night than Monday night! Getting to stay up past regular bedtime to watch MNF..the halftime highlights were always my favorite part, hearing Cossell say "DEEP DOWN FIELD..."..still brings a good feeling inside thinking about it!

      You nailed it. At half time, my mother would say "good night" and go upstairs to bed and the TV, the den, the game.... they were mine until the network signed off. Many a Tuesday morning at school, people were asking me who won the game, because I was "that kid" who got to stay up and watch it all.

    MNF was the thing for me as a kid, born in 1967. Dad would have the game on every Monday night, and it was always a battle being able to watch it, because I had to finish my homework first, before I could watch the game, but I never wanted to miss the halftime highlights, because like you said, that was the only way you knew what was going on around the league. Growing up in Miami, we had the Don Shula show before MNF every week, and Shula would go through the highlights of the Dolphins game, and break down plays, etc. Always great to watch. My Dad in his sarcastic humor, used to call the "Don Shula Show" the "Excuse of the Week Show" for when the Dolphins lost that week. It honestly wasn't very often back in the 70's.

    Al Michaels worked mostly baseball with Howard Cosell on ABC from the late 1970s until 1985.
    When Al worked the Pro Bowl in 1979-1980, he was ABC’s #2 College Football announcer and didn’t work an NFL game that season until that Pro Bowl. You’ll never see that again.
    The 1980 Pro Bowl was Al’s first NFL game on ABC. He’d be the new MNF announcer in 1986.

    Great to see Al Michaels bring out his fave Cosell stories and impersonations. I loved MNF as a kid in the 70s. Even though I knew I was in the minority, I loved Howard. He was absolutely fabulous doing the halftime highlights - showing he could be great at play-by-play, not just commentary. And to learn that he would basically "wing it," I am just in awe of Cosell's unbelievably impressive, unprecedented intellectual abilities that he delivered forthwith with his dependable panache every single and separate Monday evening! He could -- and did -- go...all...the...way!

    The trick to Cosell is to emphasize every consonant in a word punching up parts and lengthen the last one. And that odd gasp at the end of every word like a swimmer taking a quick breath on a 100 meter butterfly. Cosell could turn a 3 consonant word into 6 all day long.
    “Emphasize” for example, make it 3 words “eM-Pha-Si-Eyes-uh!”
