Hey kids! Uncle Ben here, back again for Weekend Wankshop 221! On today's lesson, you're gonna learn how to play Josie by Steely Dan, from their classic Aja record! I'm going to show you how to play the intro, verse and chorus chords, and bridge riff, all with chord notation on screen.
This is a great song to learn to expand your chord vocabulary, there's so much cool stuff in here! Tons of that signature Mu Major chord that you've heard Rick Beato talk about. Definitely one of my favorites.
I won't swear that these are the EXACT voicing Walter Brecker/ Larry Carlton played on the record! Its almost impossible to say for sure when you listen to the mix. But this will sound great when you play it, even if you don't have a million piece band backing you up.
Playing my G&L Legacy with Bareknuckle Veneer Board pickups into my Kemper Profiler here. I made the backing track in Logic plus i used Superior Drummer 3, my LSL Balboa bass, and the Darkglass B7K plugin.
Thanks for watching! What other classic Steely Dan tunes do you want to learn?
"There's a reason why your mom's super cool boyfriend thinks that Steely Dan is so freaking awesome."
Classic Uncle Ben.
Here! Here!
Thank you so much! This is so much fun to play! 🎉 Legendary song
Learning this song for my friend named josie who's came back home from studying abroad, wish me luck
great video, you are a good teacher
Excellent! Thank you so much!!
WTF this is awesome
This is awesome for two reasons: 1. Steely Dan wrote awesome compositions that stretch you in non-obvious ways. 2. Ben shows us that shredding can take more forms than sixteenth triplet scales up and down the neck.
Hi Ben, great Video, can you please show us the second guitar too, what ist doubling the bass in verses
Outstanding, Ben. Maybe you could take a look at "Your Gold Teeth II" some day - Denny Dias' greatest solo, ranking with Larry Carlton's best solos for Steely Dan. Steve Pocaro channelling Dannie Richmond from the Mingus band, Chuck Rainey on bass, Michael Omartian on a Steinway. Gnarly key modulations. Fagen tunefully whining about something mysterious. Perfection!
I believe the Em7 in the main song is better played like a G over E, meaning B on high E string, G on B string, D on G string and E on the A string. So more like a 3 note G chord on the E,B and G strings at the 7th fret over an E on the A string. It sounds much more like the record that way. Try it.
We gonna break out the hats and hooters.
I've been wondering about this song since I was 22! I'm 64 now!
Excellent lesson!
Thanks a million!
which answers the question of 'will you still feed me?' although by the time you see this you'll be at least 65...time's funny like that...naaaaaah...the mail's gotten slow...i hear it got sick... let's wish it a speedy recovery...and, as far as YOUR recovery, mr steely dan man with the effed up hand...i would advise turmeric/curcuma...known for its anti inflammatory properties... included in many indian dishes...you can buy it powdered or in capsules...for what it's worth, amongst other things, i'm a retired nurse...it's a shame more people don't know about herbal type remedies...good health to ya...and to you and yours, mr eller...
Me too! But now you're 66.
A Great Life Mystery Revealed! Thanks Ben: I'm 71, Vernon!
Yeah lm 53 life flew by didnt it
same here, wondering since Josie released ... I'm 83 and after 5 day now playing Josie! Whoda thunk :) all thanks to Ben
Good relative pitch ear training on this one... Holy cow... Just about every type of alphabet chord soup in this song.
Excellent, sir! Steely Dan is very complex...and just awesome music. Thanks for your time on the vid, man.
"Deacon Blues"!!!! "FM"!! "Rikki Don't Lose that Number" "Do it Again" "Hey Nineteen" "Reelin' in the Years" "Black Friday"
Agree!!
Such amazingly great tunes! Nice suggestions, I like “Black Cow” and “Kid Charlemagne” too! Larry Carlton’s solo on Kid Charlemagne is so freaking cool sounding!
++Black Friday would be awesome++
Great lesson! Green Earrings if possible please
One of your talents is, DEFINITELY, teaching. Seems to come very natural to you. Thank’s for the video.
Chris P thank you!!!
I vote for "Night by Night" from Pretzel Logic next -or- Deacon Blues from Aja.
Upvoted and ran away. I can’t handle this.
I have broken into the world of playing Steely Dan, and this video led me down the path, held my hand and showed me the way... Thank you so much for your simple and very well explained lesson on playing this gem! I did alter a couple of the chord fingerings due to arthritis, but now I can hit them without screaming.
yeah...let the instrument do the screaming for ya...
Pretty sure it was Dean Parks who played on Josie - no? Just watched another YT video on the Vertex Effects Channel where Mr. Parks was interviewed for a delightful 45 minutes. I don't play guitar but I enjoyed every minute of this video too. Great cord breakdown on this classic song.
Man these are some UGLY cool chords
Played this song in my high school jazz band it’s a lot of fun
Cool lesson, Ben! Clearly-explained and good chord/fret diagrams. Looking forward to more lessons around this skill level.
Idk why but the beginning of this song always reminded me of lack of comprehension by Death. Lol
Do you mean Lack of Comprehension reminds you of Josie? Because, that I can see, what, with 30 years between the 2? LoC is modern pop by comparison. Just trying to keep it in perspective. :-)
Goddamnit! your little finger is the length of my middle finger! this is hard!
Hell yeah, I can’t believe I’m only just now seeing this!
You are the man Ben Eller!
The chording in this song, and practically every other Steely Dan song, is BRILLIANT. Donald Fagen's songwriting talent and mastery of chord choices that sound great and drive a song forward is unparallelled.
Amazing to witness guitar lessons that are precise, catch the nuances of the tune and are taught at a perfect mellow pace. Ben takes a challenging song (to many of us) and breaks it down beautifully. Perfect lesson! Thanks!
🌄 BEN my brother I hate to be so flexible but 'anything' be it jazz chords or heavy metal 🤘 just bring it on ! Even if you would pick apart some classical pieces ALL would be Appreciated⛥ROCK ON ✌🍻🎵🎸🌟D.S.D🎶😎✨
I agree 100% ! Ben can bring on whatever he thinks we need to learn to expand our horizons as musicians!!!
Oh my god, I took apart your Peg lesson and worked until I could play it perfectly and now Josie! Love this! Way to go Uncle Ben. So... when is the lesson on Deacon Blues coming? 😉 winky-winky... Just kidding, sincerely, thank you for this! Buddy
Ben you have to do Aja! Lol my wife was named after this song so I HAVE to learn it. She hates when I put that song on so if I could play it 🤔.
Really went all out on this one! Thanks for giving me so many new chords to mess around with :)
It was Walter’s solo. Classic Steely Eyed Dan. Thank you Uncle. Now let’s talk solo
Steely Dan is the classiest band ever.
This is besides the fact that the bands name is referencing a vibrator with a metallic faux coating.
You're a very good teacher. Thanks for this!
So glad you use actual terms to name the chords .It makes for clear communication.Every musician should take the time to learn these terms and apply them it makes life so much better .
Larry Carlton is one of the greatest! How about Kid Charlemagne solo absolutely amazing.
Ben, Very well explained. Gotta love that spicy stuff. Perfect definition of the magical chords. Totally dope. You are Very knowledgeable of the entire fretboard and my hats off to you. I am super excited that i tuned in and look forward to more breakdowns. keep up the great work. Can't wait to apply the spicy meatball to my own stuff. Thanks!!!!
Thank you. Makes this wonderful stuff so much more accessible ! 🐑
The pace of your lessons is so perfect and you communicate brilliantly. Thank you.
On the record, it sounds like there are two guitars on the intro. So open strings sounds more like the original recording than the way Larry Carlton plays it today, as I hear it.
I stopped watching porn for this!
Dude this is XXX hardcore music
My boat's been floated
Once you get the hang of it, this song feels so great to play. Smooth; like slicing through butter!
Great lesson!
Dear Mr Wankshop,
first of all speaking as an uptight Brit who was incarcerated in a British public school (i.e. private school) for far too long - and Roman Catholic at that - I must say I am appalled by your delight in using the highly unacceptable word ‘wank’ in your moniker (and of course must wonder why), but then, on the other hand we’ve all been there so what the hell.
I have long subscribed to your channel, and appreciate all your videos, and specifically I have just watched your video on the chords of Peg and I have some questions.
First of all, Fagen was the pianist and Becker (RIP) the guitarist, and I wonder, even though you do say that you don’t think the record guitar playing was quite as etc, whether - in your view - the writing of this song was piano or guitar-driven? That is not crucial, but I would be interested, especially as you are a guitarist, not a pianist.
And I have to say that I long ago came around to the view that, both in the lyrics and music (especially in view of the songs his solo albums, both of which are excellent and the first evens wins by a whisker) Becker is hugely underrated, and I even suspect in some ways he was the driving force (when you listen to Fagen’s far more blues-based tunes which musically are less complex) in Steely Dan, most certainly lyrically.
Secondly, how’s about, dear Mr Wankshop, analysing and producing videos on quite a few more Steely Dan songs? I think that you - you said as much in the intro - and most certainly I (pretty much an also-ran in the guitar stakes) agree that they have a lot to impart to us and we would-be guitar heroes (me not you) are glad to learn. There are one or two other videos on RUclips analysing SD songs, but I have to say few if any as clear visually or methodically as yours (though to be fair one or two aren’t bad).
All the best, and if I don’t message you again before Christmas, have a Merry Christmas.
Patrick .
I have also had the good fortune to have Larry Carlton show me the intro to this song, at a masterclass he put on here in Seattle a few years ago. The way he showed me the last chord of the sequence was an A flat major 7 with a flat 5 - your pinky plays the root (A flat), ring finger plays the third (C) then your pointer finger barres the flat 5 (D) and major 7th (G) notes. That chord always eluded my ear when trying to learn it on my own, especially since it is playing with the keys and bass and is a dense mix as you noted.
The AbMaj7b5 has the advantage of being easier to grab after that D/G. I also think it sounds "drier" and a little more mysterious than the Ab13 shown in our host's interpretation in this video. However, Rick Beato, I notice, plays it as an Ab13 to illustrate a point in one of his videos (ruclips.net/video/If2Bli0rZcA/видео.html). I assume some instrument in the mix is playing that F that functions as the 6th or 13th.
Made me so happy to be able to play the first few phrases of the intro, then those chords!
Great lesson! I appreciate the graphics!
Great lesson. What a chord workout. Steely Dan knew how to write them tunes.
16:40 Why You Suck At Guitar: You Can't Even Count To 8!
Aww f#@k , I do love steely Dan , but Too drunk to play this now.. yarp
Closest I've seen to exact for Josie. The only think I'll argue about the last chord of the intro. Live, Larry Carlton plays it XX5533. The notes you're inferring are from other instruments. His fingers never extend beyond the fifth fret for the entire intro [see Larry Carlton - JOSIE (Live)].
Please show us any solo played by Denny Dias. There are some real hard ones. Even with the sheet music in front of you they are challenging. What about the solo in Green earrings by him. This is a good one, very jazzy and be boppy
Walter Becker* 🙂
It is Walter who played the solo w L.C. playing the rhythm. Thank you Ben for simplifying this killer tune! And yes please do the solo if you haven’t already.
I think Dean Parks played the intro and rhythm.
Awesome Ben , thanks for keeping it simple and clear without all the extra commentary on notes and fingering , but showing the grips instead , fuckin all that’s needed …thanks bro😊
Another great lesson, Uncle Ben. Every time I watch you play I'm just amazed by how clean your playing is. Sounds crystal clear and laser precise! #goals
Can't do the "Uncle Ben" thing. I might have dated one of his mom or dad's cousins, at my age, you just never know. It seems rude for me to do that.
Dude, awesome . Thank you .
We’d like to see to Josie solo ! Got the rest of the song down thanks to you. Standing by…thanks Ben.
Great job Ben! Your teaching is so smooth. Thanks for doing this great song. There's lots we can learn from Steely Dan. True masters of their craft.
Thanks for the video. (If only my pinky was a little bit longer)
Steely Dan - Jazz that you can listen to. Jazz Rock that you can groove to. So many great songs!
Great lesson. Big ass chords indeed just what I need. Wrist and finger calisthenics to be sure.
i think it was denny diaz that said some of donalds chords contain 12 tones so just pick a few..lol
B7#5/D# Dude
Rachelf Guitar mentions you in the "How I Taught Myself Guitar" video she just uploaded. 👍✨
Really attractive axe dude! Sweet lesson too! Bravo Ben!
2 years later and i'm still jamming on this song. please please please do more Steely Dan stuff Ben!! :)
Great lesson! :)
Also, is that a custom paint job/finish on that G&L guitar? I've not seen a G&L on their website in that finish. Great video as always Ben! I've loved Steely Dan since I was a kid thanks to my Dad. I'll definitely learn this and impress him with it. Could you do 'Shooting From My Heart' or 'Fell Off A Mountain' by Big Bam Boo please man?
Max Scardanelli did it myself! Torched the original blue burst finish with a heat gun, the sealed it with oil and wax. Happy accident.
Ben Eller Fair enough man. It's still cool regardless. Funnily enough, happy accident is what my Mum calls me...
Uncle Ben you are the juice!
How bout a lesson on Black Friday. Some crazy s?&! Happenin on that one for chur
Carve on maestro
Got another Steely lesson coming at you next week!
yesssssssssssssss the dan
Congrats on the 200k subscribers dude 😊 what about Rainbow In The Dark solo by Satchel from the Ronnie Dio Tribute album for a weekend wankshop? Love your videos dude 👍
Very nice vid Ben! Thank you so much for the breakdown and explanations of different voicings. 10/10
Hey Ben - awesome lesson. I (try) to play Steely Dan songs on three different instruments - I'm best at piano, but LOVE playing bass, and have played guitar now for 30 years. I especially appreciate that you mention other ways of playing the single notes as well as some of the chord phrasings. Also, I'm glad it's not just me that has trouble picking out the guitar tracks from the keys in the original recording mix.
And, your fretting is also very good. :) I've never seen one of your videos before so I subscribed!
I've watched a lot of guitar channels and subscribed to a few, but no-one beats Uncle Ben for pure joy of playing and music theory, and outstanding enterntainment value. Of my many favourite bits where Mr. Eller attached adjectives to chords, his choice at 16:29 takes the cake. Live long and prosper, Uncle Ben.
This is a killer Steely Dan song, thanks so much for breaking it down! Absolutely timeless🤟
This is great Uncle Ben, thanks so much. If I keep improving with your lessons people will start doubting my step-dad status.
Solo next?
Nicely done, Thanks for the time in getting this out there. Steely Dan and Larry Carlton are lifelong lessons in guitar theory and challenging crazy good chords🎸
Odds of Bodhisattva?
Uncle Ben and Steely? Instant click
Bedazzled Fingernails next, please. Pretty sure all of the tabs are off.
Thank you for the great lesson! Very good structured.
Thanks Ben ... amazing instruction ... I'm 83 and now can play Josie ... party time! (Socrates would love you)
You roll through this classic as if I’m your student. I may have to work on it for days, but you have laid it out to at least help this student (me) go back and work through the rough spots. Thank you!
Are you playing with a thinner pick?
Holy on point. Sounds better then the original! Ben you are a fuckin magical!
Best lesson on you tube.
Lover Of Outrage by new wave Brit band Penetration! Fred Purser plays a melodic modal solo with loads of over bends that lag behind the beat combined with some beautiful Phrygian phrasing. Or something. It's a thing of beauty, anyway!
Thanks Ben - nice job. Love Steely Dan. WRT the solos YES PLEASE!!! Other great Steely songs I’d like to see you break down are, FM, Deacon Blues and Kid Charlemagne. Thanks again.
Thank you thank you, thank you, thank you thank you thank you thank you, THANK YOU! Been a Steely Fan since before my conception, and I've finally started attempting to learn their guitar stuff. 3 hours later, I can successfully play this like s%#* at 50 bpm. 😅🤘 Looking forward to the practice!
Hey man, really good stuff! 👍 👍
And now the bass line… Chuck Rainey. C'mon, it's only got 4 strings. 😉
Doing Green Earrings in a studio tonight.
Ben....you've just saved me a good few ours of pain. Many thanks.
Hello. Uncle Ben. The man. For starters I am Walter aka the left-handed bloke. I hope you your family loved ones and friends are all safe. I'm sorry for not responding to you when I first checked you out couple years ago.
love your guitar in this video of Steely Dan Josie. I think you said it's a G & L ❓🤔
very creative you have inner beauty that also is displayed on the image of your guitar
I really dig your axe.
I know you made this video a little while back.
I did check it out a year or so.
Did you ever follow up with the cool solo segments of Josie by Steely Dan❓🤔
look forward to hearing from you.
Please stay safe and take care of your family and loved ones.
Sincerely Walter the left-handed bloke.
Hey Walter! Man, I haven’t made a solo video yet! Thanks for the reminder, I should definitely do that!
@@BenEller thank you so much for your reply. You have a beautiful talent. And you inspire me. Thank you so much. Silly Walter the left-handed bloke.
the chord you called a g major 13 is a Gmaj7/13 Gmajor seventh add 13....just sayin....it's definitely a MAJOR 7....
Love the "how bou tha?" when you're playing those intro chords lol
ABSOLUTELY FUCKING FANTASTIC!!!! MORE STEELY DAN!!!!!!!
Awesome lesson, thank you! So, how do I get that backing track!
Nice! I guess I'm like you're step mom's boyfriend. Great job Uncle Ben.
