No one ever covers a Tom Waits song and and makes you feel the raw human emotion like he can. They are all veiled attempts to convey his brilliance. This goes for the Eagles all the way to Chris Cornell. All brilliant in their own way but way out of their league in driving the lyric to the soul. Only Waits can do that. You however come as close as anyone I have heard. Your soulful approach made me feel the lyric where others fail. Brilliant vocal and musical arrangement and application. Bravo...

Tom Waits is an amazing songwriter! He’s my favorite. Some people can’t hear the melodies in some of his songs because they can’t see past his gritty voice (which I’m in love with). A lot of people who cover him, try to sound like him (which is impossible) I do the opposite. I just hear it, and sing it the way I do. Some fans of his love that I do that... some don’t... either way, I don’t care🤣🤣! I’m just doing what I do, and loving every moment! Haters gonna hate, LOVERS GONNA LOVE!!! 🤗😘 were bigger than them.
One of the finest songs written by Tom Waits, in my opinion. It is hard to say with so many fine songs by him. Rainbow Sleeves, The Heart of Saturday Night, Old ’55 come to mind. The less talented show up by virtue of sharp elbows and limitless promotion of chaff. I came on this by looking for Tom Waits covers to use for persuading tin foil ears, and got caught and blown away by these two. My God. She absolutely DOMINATES her songs. ANY song she sings becomes hers. I'm jealous of you who have known of her before my blessed discovery. I don't even like female singers except for Carole King and maybe Carley Simon. Adele? Whitney? You've got to put out an album of your Tom Waits covers! They are such amazing works, and I hate to say that so few can interpret and do them justice. Hearing these through a woman's voice puts a whole new spin on the brilliance of these songs. I am mostly intrigued by your female spin, because when guys do these covers I always wonder... "why...??" It just seems wrong that Tom himself isn't doing it, and rarely do these guys offer anything worthwhile - since it's Tom who embodies the character of these songs. And it's a character that can't be touched. With that in mind, I was encouraged when I saw the "Female Tribute to Tom Waits" albums thinking it would be more great stuff like yours. But... ** oh my!! ** Aside from an artist or two... what a huge miss that was (putting it mildly)!! I *think* the condenser is a clone of a Neumann U-47/U-48, an absurdly expensive but classic mic that has a lot of cheaper "soundalikes" on the market that are nearly as good. It might be a WarmAudio N-47, or a Flea 48 Classic, which are two of the pricier clones. Either one will get you fairly close in sound: the original Neumanns were George Martin's favourite mic, and saw extensive vocal use on almost all the Beatles studio recordings and some classic Frank Sinatra records. The second mic, a smaller dynamic pointed straight at her mouth, looks like the trusty Shure SM57, a cheap workhorse mic that's probably one of the most common studio mics in the world. It's normally used on acoustic instruments, with most people preferring the round-headed SM58 for vocals, but it's very popular for high sound pressure levels: singers who can really belt seem to like them as they keep uncontrolled voices controlled: John Lennon, young Robert Plant and Bono all used them. They're also, for what it's worth, the mic used on the podium for presidential addresses. I'm not sure what genius engineer thought to pair these two mics together here-a $3,000+ condenser mic with a beater dynamic mic you can get for under $100-but the combination of the two together is really magical. I've head the U47s are a real pain in the ass to EQ properly. Maybe using them here for a little splash of colour and character on the otherwise tonically perfect U47/48 is what gives the sound just the right flavour and resonance.

That is, in fact a vintage 1953 Telefunken badged U47 that belongs to my friends at Milkboy The Studio in Philadelphia. The second mic, a smaller dynamic pointed straight at her mouth, looks like the trusty Shure SM57, a cheap workhorse mic that's probably one of the most common studio mics in the world. It's normally used on acoustic instruments, with most people preferring the round-headed SM58 for vocals, but it's very popular for high sound pressure levels: singers who can really belt seem to like them as they keep uncontrolled voices controlled: John Lennon, young Robert Plant and Bono all used them. They're also, for what it's worth, the mic used on the podium for presidential addresses.
I'm not sure what genius engineer thought to pair these two mics together here-a $3,000+ condenser mic with a beater dynamic mic you can get for under $100-but the combination of the two together is really magical. I've head the U47s are a real pain in the ass to EQ properly. Maybe using them here for a little splash of colour and character on the otherwise tonically perfect U47/48 is what gives the sound just the right flavour and resonance.
Hey y’all. I just noticed this 2 year old comment😂🤣😂 I produced engineered and played guitar on this session. That is, in fact a vintage 1953 Telefunken badged U47 that belongs to my friends at Milkboy The Studio in Philadelphia. The Shure SM57 is just there to feed a monitor that was at Sharon’s feet, so she could hear herself. We were not recording the SM57. Thanks for listening 🤘🤘🤘❤️❤️❤️
