Practicing scales and playing simple musical tunes on your timpani is a great way to develop tuning skills that you'll need when playing in a band or orchestra.
This is very cool. the pre-slide (sliding before you hit), run through a nice distortion pedal and squelchy filte,r might get you to make a timpan303 (look up Roland TB-303)
If I'm at Quarter=120, can I write, say, three quarter notes in a row where each note is a half or whole step higher than the previous note, or will this be unreasonable and annoy the timpanist?
What you propose is possible but depending on what else you are writing a timpanist might place notes on different drums. I think it is better for a composer to write what they want and then let the timpanist decide how to play it . Of course the composer needs to write what is possible and what is idiomatic to the instrument
I wasn't sure how fast a timpani player could tune each drum. Now I know, thanks!

bro wow...
Do you have adjust your foot by feel, or is there an indicator of some kind so you know how much to move your foot.
I do have tuning indicators so I use positional memory and visual with the gauge . For quick changes I rely on positional more
