Why wasn't Biden's age discussed well before this? Weird how it didn't bother the donors, Clooney, Pelosi or the others until the bad debate. More people voted for Trump in the primaries than for Biden, by a margin of 2.3 million votes. Who ya gonna listen to, the people?
Biden needs 80 million votes to win. He got 14.5 million while he won 19 million last time. That should be a warning signal and has been.
My big problem is that they're relying on polls in July which he knows should be taken with a grain of salt. But, they're happy to dismiss the 13 million Democrats that voted in the primary. Now, they're going to tell that them that a small group at the top have decided that the voters are wrong and that this small group will now decide who the nominee is. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.
14.5 million out of 16 million Democrats voted for Biden. More Republicans voted for Trump alone than voted in the Democratic primaries.
In 2008, 38 million Democrats voted in the primaries.
In 2016, 31 million.
In 2020, 36 million, 19 million for Biden.
If you were a Democrat, would you be sanguine about Biden's chances looking at those numbers? Yes, he had no serious opposition, so, if you like, blame Gretchen Whitmer or Gavin Newsom for not challenging him, and leaving it to Dean Phillips (who?) and Marianne Williamson (oh, her again). If I had been Biden and I was confident in my ability, I would have insisted on debating Phillips and Williamson, just to stay in practice and show off. If my confidence in myself were misplaced, it would have become obvious last year or in January or February, not on June 27th.
We should never have coronations, and this year we had two.

The kerfuffle over the seemingly desperate need for a different Dem candidate seems to be based on the performative aspects of a presidency. It's clear that Trump can do a great job at schmoozing a crowd and making wisecracks, reading from a teleprompter. But is that the *actual* job of the POTUS? What do people think a president's job *consists* of, and who do they think is capable of carrying out those responsibilities? They should be asked these questions constantly, because at the moment, their vote will ultimately decide between someone who can do the job, and someone who is skilled at behaving *as if* he can do the job (but never could and doesn't even really like the job).
Yes, Pres. Biden is slower, but governance is not a videogame or an appearance on Last Comic Standing. We expect presidents to make reasoned, thoughtful, wise and *caring* decisions in the national and global interest, after broad consultation with experts and stakeholders, and after giving it a bit of time to mull over and weigh pros and cons. We expect them to read all the briefing notes and have respect for the institutions that comprise and sustain the nation. We do NOT expect them to make snap decisions with a Sharpie pen.
