My late father sailed on various Union Castle ships, eventually reaching the rank of Chief Engineer. In the 1960’s, a few years after I was born, he decided to leave ‘the life at sea’ but he always remembered with great fondness his life at sea and would mention the ports of Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Durban, all in South Africa. In the 1980’s I worked in SA and was happy to visit these lovely cities, which dad had always spoken about.
I travelled on the Windsor Castle on this maiden voyage as a young boy with my parents and my brother, I still recall some of the trip, it was amazing as a young lad.
