I'm 49 and I just started a year and a half ago with zero music experience or background. I'm constantly thinking, "What the heck am I doing???" Up until now I've just been trying to ignore that voice, so this was incredibly encouraging. Now I feel like I can refute the voice and not just ignore it. Thank you! It really does make a difference.

Your comment on making a beat every day for 100 days really got to me when I was starting out. Today was day 99 and I'm blown away by my progress! Keep them vibes going!

started again in my late 40s, can ease in cos I make money already, loving it, and some of my homies who’ve been doing it are still in the game and have grown into good people to work with 🙌🏾

Facts Facts Facts. Get rid of the doubt and focus on yourself. Ignore everybody else unless they are willing to help you out than that just focus on where YOU have to go

Also, if you do this long enough, you're going to completely reboot your approach and find yourself learning alongside new beatmakers when some new style takes over. You could be great at trap beats today, but it won't be long until some new thing dominates that nobody's even heard yet and you have to get your head around that. If you were making R&B in the nineties and make music that sounds current today, that would mean shedding your skin three or more times since then. Somebody's going to make a new input method that completely transforms how we interact with the sequencer, and you see hints of that already with the Haken Continuum and ROLI Seaboard ranges. You might develop a ton of bad habits and realise that you've got to scrape out your skull and start anew. Whatever it is, you will go through rebirths anyway so it doesn't matter when you're "born".

I don’t know how many of the comments you read Decap but thank you for inspiring me to get a distro kid account to really put my music out there.

Come on now....at 17 you need to stop with the doubt. In what other industry can a teenager make waves? Get to grinding....and don't forget deodorant!

The sad fact however is that the "it's never too late thing" only applies to anyone who's started young. We could say "Snoop Dogg is 50, Eminem is 50, 2Chains broke out at 36, bla bla bla," but the reason why those people have longevity is that they succeeded at such a young age and people will always associate their current older selves with their youth. Even when Slim Shady and Tityboi (2Chains) started, people were already buzzing about their music in the local scene. Even when it comes to music like Jazz, Blues, Rock, even though there's no age limit to making it, there's an age limit to becoming good enough to become a professional. Those are technically more dedicated disciplines where youth will once again reign supreme, but for a different reason. Your brain solidifies in plasticity by the time you turn 25 so whatever you've learned by that point will more or less be the skill level you're going to stick with for the rest of your life. Of course, you can always learn new things, but it takes more effort and energy and the music industry doesn't slow down for anyone. And yeah, although it's true that maturity will only hone your craft into a deeper intellectual experience, what good is maturity if there's no skill?
So in other words, if you're old and you wanna start out, just keep music a hobby and find something else. They are many jobs that don't require a good amount of skill that pays good money. You just need to be there and work hard. Music is not like that.
