    There was a really subtle thing that happened in this episode, so subtle that I never caught it until just now, that could have served as SUCH a strong talking point about the subject the episode explores.
    The crime the original two explorers were convicted of was not yielding their seat to a pregnant woman, which they did because they didn't notice this woman.
    Now, someone took that picture, which means someone DID notice. But yet instead of simply pointing out to the two men that there was a pregnant woman there who should have their seat, they took a picture and shared it for people to cast judgment and shame. Whoever took that picture was NOT actually interested in correcting the wrong, because they could have pointed the problem out and likely have thus solved it. They didn't want to solve the issue, they wanted to be the catalyst for casting shame and leading the attack.
    And that is extremely true of our modern shame culture. These people have no interest in actually solving the problems they cry against, they just want to be the standard-bearer in a glorious battle. They don't fight to win the war, they fight so they can be part of the battle.

      also has others pointed out there were actually empty seats the pregnant woman could have taken. also she didn't ask for their seat when she could see they weren't aware of her. so they jumped to blame rather then think about the image.

    • @marscaleb
      @marscaleb 6 лет назад +38

      "Calling out" that behavior is its own reward. That much is seen in our real-world society today. Everyone who tweets about being upset about something. What do they gain?
      Whatever it is they feel they gain from doing that, they get it.

      What China is doing isn't the same thing, but its actually worse. China's system doesn't let citizens vote on good or bad behavior. Rather, they use social media and other forms of technology to spy on their citizen's behavior and give them a "score" of how loyal they are based on the sites they visit. But, what's even more nefarious is that you're ALSO penalized based on your friend network: those who socialize with people of low scores also get low scores. So, in incentivizes people to completely disassociate with anyone who doesn't tout the party line 100%.

      While there is SOME truth to what you say, the electoral college also allows a very small group of people to control everything. I'm pretty educated and I get how the electoral college works and on a level I agree with you, it isn't a bad thing, here is the problem with it: GERRYMANDERING. Districts need to be decided NOT by the party in charge but by an independent non partisan agency. There is also the fact that an Elector can vote contrary to the district they represent (Also most people don't know that while a majority of electors are people that hold office a lot of them are owners of corporations, you can find who your state electors and the elector for your district are via google and wikipedia has an archive of all electors for each presidential election.

      Karl Lieck Unless it was replaced with a similar system to the electoral college, it’d be an outright disaster. The electoral college is useful because without it, high population states like California and New York would control the entire election. You can’t blame the college for the candidates that came. You blame the people who voted. True democracy, like a popular vote, doesn’t work with such a large landmass and population.

      Lucen Dacier I would argue that's a major improvement jail is to impersonal to most people they don't think twice about it. Max sec lifers describe it as being in a warehouse of some kind so society can forget about them. Lashings would both be more humane as decades of a person's life are lost leaving them with little hope of reintegration vs a painful but quick punishment that lets you get on with your life and it is a public reminder to those that might get any funny ideas. Also sexual segregation was not a thing in the book or movie. It was simply women had better reflexes that made them better pilots. It was about having the best people for the job.

      The Founders despised Democracy. Jefferson called Democracy the worst system of govt ever devised. Another, (can't remember who) said that Democracy would be "Trading one tyrant 3,000 miles away, for 3,000 tyrants one mile away". Franklin described it as being "Two wolves and a lamb deciding who is for dinner." What they developed was a Constitutional Republic, designed to counteract mob tyranny through checks and balances. Franklin continued his quote with saying that "Liberty is a heavily armed lamb contesting the vote". The problem with Big Government is that it circumvents checks and balances, and has allowed the mob to be bribed into trading away everyone's Liberty for "free stuff". That is how every Democracy declines and collapses.

      1 a : government by the people; especially : rule of the majority b : a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.
      A Republic is a form of democracy, however it is not a true democracy, so u are giving me quotes taken out of context by men who understood the meaning of what they were saying and railing against a pure form of democracy in which everyone votes and the majority rules, make no mistake they knew that the republic they were in favor of was a form of democracy so u are eather a. This episode you mention about people not knowing they are on a starship sounds a whole lot like Robert Heinlein's Orphans of the Sky. I wonder if it was inspired by it.

      Given Star Trek's influence on The Orville that episode was probably an homage to the TOS episode "For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky".

      There's a Doctor Who novel called Wooden Heart (Tenth Doctor and Martha) with the same premise as the plot, but then it throws in a twist that gives it a whole new angle again.

      A really great social critique series tbh,and now with the massive budget netflix has given the series it's contemporary style has gotten much better in terms of production and aesthetics

      And the Black Mirror Episode resembles the same basic theme of the 2003 novel "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom".... but the mob harping agains The Orville for doing it while its mob is oblivious to Black Mirror, are themselves oblivious to the previous novel.
      So the question, how many of them will not have the necessitate self-awareness to admit they are no better than the people they are harping about.... and how many will continue to do it because they are effectively talking house plants.

      For one i never made a statement it's bad or not,just highlighting a similarity I found,I also may read that novel if it's within the same category because I enjoy these

      Well, maybe not addressed specifically at you.... but the whole "The Orville just ripped off an episode of Black Mirror" has been running around by people when this comes up, and was heading it off at the pass.

    In another dystopian future there will be a three button vote. One button is "E", another button is "S", and the last button is"G." Those scores will mercilessly determine the fate of all individuals in society.

    I was listening to Newstalk's The Right Hook show when George Hook made those comments about rape ... the moment he said what he did I said to myself, holy shit George don't bloody say that, you're fucked now. Of course I was right, and you were right, his apology made no difference it was just chum to the ravening sharks.
    Letting people know they should take care of themselves is not victim blaming and does not excuse perpetrators. If George had said, ''Lads, don't leave the George (a Dublin gay bar) at 3am by yourself, you might get beaten up by thugs'' I wouldn't be offended as a gay man, I would be thinking ''You're right,'' and me not wanting to walk out of the George alone at 3am would not excuse the behaviour of anyone who did have intent to harm me.

    If the stars should appear is nothing more than "For the world is hollow, and I have touched the sky" from TOS in a different color.

    I think Seth has moved to the right a little over the last few years. I am not saying he is a conservative, but he moved a little to the center. An example of this is the character Brian from his series Family Guy. When the series began Brian was the voice of reason. He was the idealized image of what a liberal thought a man should be. As time went on and seasons past Brian became more of what the conservative thinks a liberal male is. Link of example below. I often wonder if this might be influenced by Rush Limbaugh. From what I have heard Seth and Rush have become good friends over the last few years. ruclips.net/video/tVFp8KTEw-k/видео.html

      Well, you may be right about MacFarlane but the change in character isn't limited to Brian and may not be just about politics... look at the shift in especially Lois, Stewie and Joe.

    I loved Scrubs but I thought they were absolutely terrible at juggling comedy and drama. The comedy was great usually but the drama was always pretty hackneyed in my opinion. Outside of the Brendan Fraser one and one or two other episodes, it really never worked for me.

    • @Demogorgon47
      @Demogorgon47 5 лет назад

      I always thought it was the other way around. The drama was great and at first so was the humor. But then they turned JD into a clown (in one episode somewhat literally) and all the other characters in the show because annoying and unrealistic. And the jokes stopped being clever and started becoming The Simpsons level humour.
