- Multiple problems. Cracks on back, top, and peg head. Loose braces on the inside back plate. Bridge is broken and needs a custom replacement. Also needs a fret job and setup to play well.
It just clicked that you are sort of making a go bar deck using the top to act as a spring for your post. Great idea! Suppose you already have an assortment of various length posts, as this must be a regular problem for you.
Thanks Jerry you know exactly.what the remedy is. Love 💖 your videos
great video! Love the old Gibson videos :)
I agree with you Jerry on those type of bridges, I have a Gibson Dove with about the same setup, a very poor design for Gibson. Great work, really enjoyed watching.
Thanks for the comment. Part 2 just uploaded, part 3 tomorrow.
I'm an avid guitar player. I try to play every single day for at least 2 hours but when I have time I will play for 4 to 6 hours. You have inspired me a lot and I would like to be a luthier just like you. I have watched so many videos of you. And I love you to death for all the amount of precise effort and care you do for each guitar. Where did you learn to be a luthier? I see all the expensive sophisticated tools you use.
nancy chong I am self taught. I started by buying the Roger siminoff book on how to build a mandolin, built serveral mandolins and the rest is history.
nancy chong thank you for the kind words and thank you for watching
I quite agree that the adjustable saddle is no good also in my J160e replica in 2016. I had no idea why the John Lennon one in 1962 sounded so warm in "And I Love Her". Finally I rebuild a bridge groove, absent in the first place, for a new bone saddle.
Sounds like a snare drum...but you can fix it for sure Jerry.
excellent tutorial ,thanks again .
You are welcome. Thanks for commenting.
Jerry Last July 4th Wayne (our blind banjoist) and I played at my BIL Jerrys home. Said he wanted to
show me a guitar. Lo and behold it was a 1969 J45. Pristine Sunburst. I offered him $!,000,00 and he
declined (as expected).
Great video series fixing this J45. One of the best I have ever seen. How did you level the finger board? Do you use a dremel tool for this?
Good work they are lucky the top did not pull up at the bridge.
Thanks for the note. The top was pulled a little but not too bad. The new bridge helped straighten it a little to.
I notice there is no ´homemade reverb´ in this one.
hey Jerry love the video i have a question when you reglue the brace do you have to get the old glue off first
It is better to remove the glue when possible. Braces are difficult to clean. So sometimes you just have to glue without removing the old glue.
thanks I wasn't sure if the old glue would need to be removed or not keep the video coming and thanks again
Actually, your “post” functions as a wedge.
What would repair like this cost? Ball park.
+Lucky Goose I charge $60 per hour. Parts and shipping your extra. Most repairs Take Me 3 to 4 hours.
Hello are you a luthier?
Well... I'd like to think so. Been building and repairing instruments since 1983.
