    Thanks so much for all of your fantastic work. In the tone stack, the 1986 slope resister is a 56k , the 1987 should be a 33k and you’ll find that it makes a difference (more gain). Also the preamp mixing point (2 470k’s ) does have the 500pf bypass for the bright channel on the 1987. Sorry to be so picky but having made many 20 watt versions of this circuit, I can see the scheme in my sleep .

      I'd almost say the 1986 is a bit "wooly" nearing muddy, being a bit too big in the bottom / low mids (it seems to cause the breakup to occur at the wrong frequency). The '87 has teat boosted/crisp upper mid that works great for guitar.
      I might say something completely different if Doug was playing a P-Bass, however....

    • @jenniferwhitewolf3784
      @jenniferwhitewolf3784 4 года назад +4

      Pete Dazer No... all caps have a slightly different sound. We can even measure the characteristics that cause these slight sonic variations with specialized testers built by Hewlett Packard originally back in the late 1970. It took 2 testers to cover a wide frequency range from a few Hz out to low radio frequency. At slightly over $10,000 each in the 1970s, few were sold outside of large business and standards labs. I now own both the HP units, can make all the measurements for DA, DF, ESR, and other characterizations.

    • @NuttyforNissan
      @NuttyforNissan 4 года назад +5

      Hi Pete I agree as far as how good our hearing is, as noted by Jennifer the caps are different but can we actually hear it. The mods that Doug did mostly the .1 to .022 is what has changed the sound in this amp.

    • @misterhat5823
      @misterhat5823 4 года назад +3

      The type is more important than the brand. Almost all film caps are appropriate for audio. Electrolytics are okay for large bypasses. Ceramics can be somewhat poor if they are high dielectric constant types because the capacitance varies with voltage. An exception to this is if the value is so high that little AC voltage is developed across them.

    • @misterhat5823
      @misterhat5823 4 года назад +5

      @@jenniferwhitewolf3784 DA, DF, ESR al have very little effect on sound in a well designed circuit. You can measure it, but you won't hear it. "Cap upgrades" are nothing but snake oil.

    You were sorely missed, dear Uncle. This conversion was the exact platform for your triumphant homecoming. Before diving into the particulars, I think it important to pay proper recognition to your conscientious regard to the ever present purists who are unfortunately poised to pounce on any modicum of opine assumptions. It is this type of wholehearted consideration that sets your channel apart from most amplifier technological sort. The audio test(s) were part and parcel of this entire conversion, The tonality on the 1986 circuit is overtly at the bottom of the frequency spectrum. It demonstrates the obvious tailoring for a bass, or baritone guitar. Conversely, the 1987 had rich, high mids, and an airy clarity while strumming the P90 loaded Jr. The presence sounded comfortably familiar. It breathed differently, and without the flubby burp of the 1986. I didn't want to forget mentioning the fantastic packing job for the Mustard caps. Sometimes the most inane materials are harbingers of the highest genius. I enjoyed this new seasons episode of Uncle Doug. Please keep `em coming! Thanks for sharing, and enjoy the weekend.

    So happy to watch your great videos again after a painfully long while!
    I just 4 days ago accidentally found and tested 70's NOS 400V mustard capasitors and I was very surprised because they did not leak at all. They were very tightly in tolerances as well so maybe I will test if they bring any mojo to sound.
    To be honest, I have made comparisons earlier several times and it is almost impossible for a normal person to tell if the cap is polystyrene, polycarbonate, polypropylene or paper if it does not leak and is within tolerance.
    For some reason I personally like old bright yellow Philips HQ polycarbonate caps. They never have failed and IMO sound great.

    Very glad to see you back with another terrific video. There are some subtle variations in Marshall amps and where some of the components are can cause unexpected changes to the sound. That 500pF cap across the 470K resistor I think is actually in both the 1986 and 1987 models and it has what I think is an unwanted effect. In both amps it is connected between the grid of V2a and the wiper of the lower channel (schematic position) Volume control. If you are playing through the upper channel (schematic position) and you alter the lower channel Volume control it acts like a simple treble cut tone control. I realise 500pF is not a large value cap for a treble cut control but it does have an effect. Conversely it boosts the treble of the lower channel by routing the higher frequencies around the 470K resistor, plus the 1987 lower channel has a 0.005uF 'bright' cap across its Volume control. The Bluesbreaker has a 220pF across a 470k and the JTM45 has a 500pF across a 220K. I only found this out about a year ago when repairing the aforementioned amps. I guess if the player is aware of the effect it doesn't matter but I still think to have one channel's Volume control effect the tone, albeit slight, of the other channel is a bit odd. But it's still a Marshall so who am I to criticise. As a teenager back in the sixties those mustard caps were in open trays all laid out on tables in the parts store I frequented. I think I need a TARDIS.
    All the best for the New Year. Jeff.

    Hi Doug nice resto job on the amp. Interestingly these valve rectified 50 watt heads were essentially JTM 45 circuit running EL 34 output as opposed to the earlier KT 66 / 6l6 type with the output transformer matched to the EL 34`s. The split cathode circuit came out in `68. The bass circuit is closest to the original layout.

    The differences are relatively minor, but definitely audible.
    The 86 had a little more bass end, and the 87 had more focused mids. Maybe it's just placebo, but I preferred the tone of the 87. Sounded more like a Marshall to my ears while the 86 seemed to have had a little bit of Fender sprinkled in there. Odd I know, but thats what I heard.

    Greetings Uncle Doug,
    I sure am glad you posted another video, I was gettin' kinda worried
    Even though I am not a musician and so will never need a guitar amp I really enjoy your videos and have learned a lot about tube amplifiers from your videos. If you ever do a series about building a stereo hi fi amp I will build it.
    I also enjoy your Hot Rod stuff even though I have never owned one and probably never will. Nevertheless I really like looking at fine craftsmanship and who doesn't like a hot rodded engine? As a precision machinist with 40 some years experience the mechanical stuff is quite appealing.
    Finally, it warms my heart to see the affection and care you show your pets. Rusty sure was special and Jack and Ollie are too. Thanks for posting your videos.

    Doug you can use 018 Mullards/Bianchi's much cheaper than the insane price of 022's without any noticeable loss. Shared Cathode on V1 Vs Split cathode can help with gain also. The change in tone stack to lead spec and the .68 on V2 will increase mid gain also. You can go to a 25k pot 4.7k R .68 combo instead of 5k pot 01 combo on the negative F.B. loop for a less bright more mid presence control and reduce problems with a scratchy presence control. Try a 50K instead of a 22k pot on the mid control for more lower mids. Also where you put the negative F.B. lead on the impedance selector can change the gain of the amp in a good way. Marshall made numerous subtle changes over the years and everything that I have mentioned minus the use of 018's can be found in different models over the years and the total combination sounds great in a 50 watt.

    I to am very glad to see "Good 'Ol Uncle Doug"! The difference was very apparent between the two circuits. The '86 was more bassy, especially on those flappy low notes. The increased treble and mid were audible but the overall tone was similar. It's a Marshall for Gods sake. It was starting to break up a little early to give the "British Sound". The EL34s sounded like they should. Clapton would be proud! Guitars and cars, what a combination. So many similarities, paint, loud sounds and the most important.....they attract beautiful women!
