Autistics Boys First Time Speaking

  • The other day I stumbled across an old video I thought was lost, a memory that is burned into my mind & I’ll never forget. I was sitting at work and got a video text from Kaidales therapist of him speaking words for the first time ever. I couldn’t believe it. Tears filled my eyes as I heard my boys voice for the first time at 5 years old. For 5 years I wondered if Kaidale would ever speak, if I would ever hear his sweet voice. Those 5 years of waiting seemed like an eternity. I wanted to share this special memory with y’all because I know the feeling of waiting to hear your kids voice. During those early years, I always appreciated hearing other family’s “first time speaking” stories, it gave me hope that maybe one day I might have a similar story to tell. I hope this video gives y’all some encouragement if your still in the waiting stage.

My first word was also cookie(though I did not have speech delays). That was the cutest video of Kaidale speaking for the first time. I love being able to find alternative ways to connect with those on the spectrum despite their social and communicative struggles.

My mom said that she would also try to make me talk or make sounds because I was not taking until I was 5 but then I was in speech for 8 years. I was diagnosed with apraxia and autism and audio processing disorder when I was around 5

My daughter has apraxia of speech. I use to feel jealous of other people kids talking and learning. My daughter is 13 now and talks a lot now but she is so very shy. She does sound different it can be difficult to understand her if you aren't around her everyday. But I let her talk when ever she wanted to. I never told her to be quiet or shhhhh her because she had to learn how to talk.

I think confidence is a big part of it, sometimes Kaidale can be soft spoken when trying to talk, I try to build him up and encourage him to speak up because his words are amazing:)

You are a great mother.. from all the videos you have done you can tell that your whole life is centered around him ... I don’t know how to say this without sounding horrible but your trying to inform people ... I think some people use their children just to be out there... I have a grandson who has autism and I embrace it.. he is my everything... there is more going on in the little heads than what people think..your son can understand more than what people think ... just letting you know that you are a great mother 🤩🤩🤩

So precious. That's awesome. My daughter used to love super why too. Anything PBS Kids even though she started off with Disney Junior as a baby. It's great that u did this to give other parents with nonverbal children on the spectrum. My daughter spoke one, two, sometimes three word phrases from about 18 months but never progressed beyond that n that was literally the only sign for us that something was different. Other than that she seemed pretty typical n hit all her milestones at fairly typical ages. My mom would tell me she knew very brilliant people who had great lives n were successful who didn't speak til 4,5 or even 10. But I knew something was off n after 6 months of a pediatrician telling me she was fine n then almost a year on a waiting list she was diagnosed with autism at 4, one month away from turning 4. Luckily she was already in preschool n receiving speech n OT thanks to her IEP n a program called Child Find (the next step up from Infants n Toddlers). She is 6 now n can speak in sentences with prompting n reminders, short phrases in her own, sings whole songs,n is starting to read n spell n trying to write. It's amazing what they can do with the right therapies, encouragement/reinforcements n a lotta love. You're awesome momma. Have u ever made a video about how n when he was diagnosed n the signs he displayed n when they started? I was just curious because I'd love to see it.

That is an amazing story, I couldn't agree with you more, the right combination of therapies and support makes a huge difference in progress. I've talked about his early years before in Q&A videos, also the one with my mom we talked about it but I haven't had a dedicated video just on that.
